Linear optical implementation of nonlocal product states and their indistinguishability

Abstract

In a recent paper, Bennett et al. [Phys. Rev. A 59, 1070 (1999)] have shown the existence of a basis of product states of a bipartite system with manifest nonlocal properties. In particular these states cannot be completely discriminated by means of bilocal measurements. In this paper we propose an optical realization of these states and we will show that they cannot be completely discriminate by means of a global measurement using only optical linear elements, conditional transformation, and auxiliary photons.

Tensor-product states and local indistinguishability: an optical linear implementation

Angelo C. M. Carollo

In this paper we investigate the properties of distinguishability of an orthogonal set of product states of two three level particle system by a simple class of joint measures. Here we confine ourselves to a system of analysis built up of linear elements, such as beam splitters and phase shifters, delay lines, electronically switched linear devices and auxiliary photons. We present here the impossibility of realization of a perfect never falling analyzer with this tools.

The role of auxiliary photons in state discrimination with linear optical devices

Angelo C. M. Carollo, G. Massimo Palma

The role of auxiliary photons in the problem of identifying a state secretly chosen from a given set of L-photon states is analysed. It is shown that auxiliary photons do not increase the ability to discriminate such states by means of a global measurement using only optical linear elements, conditional transformation and auxiliary photons.

Nonlocality of orthogonal product states

Zhichao Zhang, Fei Gao, Su‐Juan Qin +2 more

In this paper, we mainly study the local indistinguishability of mutually orthogonal product basis quantum states in $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d$. In $3\ensuremath{\bigotimes}3$, Bennett et al. [ Phys. Rev. A 59, 1070 (1999)] presented nine orthogonal product basis quantum states which cannot be distinguished by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). In the work by Zhang et al. [Z.-C. Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. A 90, 022313 (2014)], this result was generalized in $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d$, where $d$ is odd. In this paper, we aim to construct locally indistinguishable orthogonal product basis quantum states in $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d$. For the general $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}(d>2)$ quantum system, we first construct $4d\ensuremath{-}4$ orthogonal product states, and prove these states are locally indistinguishable using a very simple but quite effective method. Then, based on these states, we construct some classes of locally indistinguishable orthogonal product basis quantum states (OPBS) in $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}(d>2)$. Finally, we construct some LOCC indistinguishable OPBS in multipartite quantum systems. All of the above results demonstrate the phenomenon of nonlocality without entanglement.

Experimental nonlocal measurement of a product observable

Yuan Li, Han-Sen Zhong, Yi-Han Luo +6 more

Nonlocal measurement, or instantaneous measurement of nonlocal observables, is a considerably difficult task even for a simple form of product observable since relativistic causality prohibits interaction between spacelike separate subsystems. Following a recent proposal for effectively creating the von Neumann measurement Hamiltonian of nonlocal observables [Brodutch and Cohen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 070404 (2016)], here we report a proof-of-principle demonstration of nonlocally measuring a product observable using linear optics without the violation of relativistic causality. Our scheme provides a feasible approach to perform nonlocal measurements via quantum erasure with linear optics.

Genuinely nonlocal product bases: Classification and entanglement-assisted discrimination

Sumit Rout, Ananda G. Maity, Amit Mukherjee +2 more

An orthogonal product basis of a composite Hilbert space is genuinely nonlocal if the basis states are locally indistinguishable across every bipartition. From an operational point of view, such a basis corresponds to a separable measurement that cannot be implemented by local operations and classical communication unless all the parties come together in a single location. In this work we classify genuinely nonlocal product bases into different categories. Our classification is based on the state elimination property of the set via orthogonality-preserving measurements when all the parties are spatially separated or different subsets of the parties come together. We then study local state discrimination protocols for several such bases with additional entangled resources shared among the parties. Apart from consuming less entanglement than teleportation-based schemes, our protocols indicate operational significance of the proposed classification and exhibit nontrivial use of genuine entanglement in the local state discrimination problem.

Nonlocality of orthogonal product basis quantum states

Zhichao Zhang, Fei Gao, Guojing Tian +2 more

In this paper, we mainly study the local indistinguishability of mutually orthogonal product basis quantum states in the high-dimensional quantum systems. In the Hilbert space of $3\ensuremath{\bigotimes}3$, Walgate and Hardy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 147901 (2002)] presented a very simple proof for nonlocality of nine orthogonal product basis quantum states which are given by Bennett et al. [Phys. Rev. A 59, 1070 (1999)]. In the quantum system of $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d$, where $d$ is odd, we construct ${d}^{2}$ orthogonal product basis quantum states and prove these states are locally indistinguishable. Then we are able to construct some locally indistinguishable product basis quantum states in the multipartite systems. All these results reveal the phenomenon of ``nonlocality without entanglement.''
