Induced measures in the space of mixed quantum states

Abstract

We analyse several product measures in the space of mixed quantum states. In particular, we study measures induced by the operation of partial tracing. The natural, rotationally invariant measure on the set of all pure states of a N × K composite system, induces a unique measure in the space of N × N mixed states (or in the space of K × K mixed states, if the reduction takes place with respect to the first subsystem). For K = N the induced measure is equal to the Hilbert-Schmidt measure, which is shown to coincide with the measure induced by singular values of non-Hermitian random Gaussian matrices pertaining to the Ginibre ensemble. We compute several averages with respect to this measure and show that the mean entanglement of N × N pure states behaves as ln N -1/2.

Average fidelity between random quantum states

Karol Życzkowski, Hans-Jürgen Sommers

We analyze mean fidelity between random density matrices of size $N$, generated with respect to various probability measures in the space of mixed quantum states: the Hilbert-Schmidt measure, the Bures (statistical) measure, the measure induced by the partial trace, and the natural measure on the space of pure states. In certain cases explicit probability distributions for the fidelity are derived. The results obtained may be used to gauge the quality of quantum-information-processing schemes.

Average subentropy and coherence of random mixed quantum states

Lin Zhang, Uttam Singh, Arun Kumar Pati

The generic aspects of the entanglement for random pure states are known to be established via the powerful phenomena of concentration of measure. Here, we find analytical expressions for the average subentropy over the set of random mixed states generated via various probability measures on it. The main ingredients in these results are Selberg's integrals. Surprisingly, our results show that the average subentropy of random mixed states approaches to the maximum value of the subentropy which is attained for the maximally mixed state as we increase the dimension. As an application, we find the average coherence of random mixed quantum states sampled from various probability measures, analytically. In the special case of the random mixed states sampled from the induced measure via the partial tracing of the random bipartite pure states, we establish the typicality of the relative entropy of coherence for random mixed states, numerically. In particular, we show that almost all random mixed states have relative entropy of coherence equal to the average relative entropy of coherence.

Subnormalized states and trace-nonincreasing maps

Valerio Cappellini, Hans-Jürgen Sommers, Karol Życzkowski

We investigate the set of completely positive, trace-nonincreasing linear maps acting on the set MN of mixed quantum states of size N. Extremal point of this set of maps are characterized and its volume with respect to the Hilbert-Schmidt (HS) (Euclidean) measure is computed explicitly for an arbitrary N. The spectra of partially reduced rescaled dynamical matrices associated with trace-nonincreasing completely positive maps belong to the N cube inscribed in the set of subnormalized states of size N. As a by-product we derive the measure in MN induced by partial trace of mixed quantum states distributed uniformly with respect to the HS measure in MN2.

Restricted numerical shadow and the geometry of quantum entanglement

Zbigniew Puchała, Jarosław Adam Miszczak, Piotr Gawron +3 more

The restricted numerical range W R ( A ) of an operator A acting on a D -dimensional Hilbert space is defined as a set of all possible expectation values of this operator among pure states which belong to a certain subset R of the set of pure quantum states of dimension D . One considers for instance the set of real states, or in the case of composite spaces, the set of product states and the set of maximally entangled states. Combining the operator theory with a probabilistic approach we introduce the restricted numerical shadow of A —a normalized probability distribution on the complex plane supported in W R ( A ). Its value at point is equal to the probability that the expectation value 〈ψ| A |ψ〉 is equal to z , where |ψ〉 represents a random quantum state in subset R distributed according to the natural measure on this set, induced by the unitarily invariant Fubini–Study measure. Studying restricted shadows of operators of a fixed size D = N A N B we analyse the geometry of sets of separable and maximally entangled states of the N A × N B composite quantum system. Investigating trajectories formed by evolving quantum states projected into the plane of the shadow, we study the dynamics of quantum entanglement. A similar analysis extended for operators on D = 2 3 -dimensional Hilbert space allows us to investigate the structure of the orbits of GHZ and W quantum states of a three-qubit system.

On twin observables in entangled mixed states

Fedor Herbut

It is pointed out that every mixed state statistical operator is, up to a normalization constant, a super state vector in the Hilbert space of linear Hilbert-Schmidt operators acting in the state space of the quantum system. Hence, the well understood Schmidt canonical expansion of ordinary state vectors can be carried over to mixed states. In particular, it can be utilized for evaluating all the twins, i. e., the opposite-subsystem observables the measurement of one of which is, on account of entanglement, ipso facto also a measurement of the other. This is illustrated in full detail in the case of the Horodecki two spin-one-half-particle states with maximally disordered subsystems.
