Abstract

Recently two methods have been developed for the quantization of the electromagnetic field in general dispersing and absorbing linear dielectrics. The first is based upon the introduction of a quantum Langevin current in Maxwell's equations [T. Gruner and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 53, 1818 (1996); Ho Trung Dung, L. Kn\"oll, and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 57, 3931 (1998); S. Scheel, L. Kn\"oll, and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A 58, 700 (1998)], whereas the second makes use of a set of auxiliary fields, followed by a canonical quantization procedure [A. Tip, Phys. Rev. A 57, 4818 (1998)]. We show that both approaches are equivalent.

Electromagnetic field quantization in absorbing dielectrics

Reza Matloob, R. Loudon, Stephen Mark Barnett +1 more

The electromagnetic field is quantized in dielectric media that show both loss and dispersion. The complex dielectric function of the medium is assumed to be a known function and the loss is modeled by Langevin forces in the forms of noise current operators. The noise current correlation function is related to the assumed dielectric function by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Field quantization is carried out for the infinite homogeneous dielectric, the semi-infinite dielectric, and the dielectric slab, where the fields in the second and third cases are restricted to propagation perpendicular to the dielectric surfaces. The forms of the vector potential operator are obtained in the different spatial regions for all three geometries, and in each case the required canonical commutation relation for the vector potential and its conjugate generalized momentum operator is verified. The spatial dependence of the vacuum field fluctuations is calculated for the two dielectric geometries that have surfaces.

Alternative approach to electromagnetic field quantization in nonlinear and inhomogeneous media

L.-M. Duan, Guang‐Can Guo

A simple approach is proposed for the quantization of the electromagnetic field in nonlinear and inhomogeneous media. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg's equations we derive Maxwell's equations for the field operators. When the nonlinearity goes to zero, this quantization method returns to the generalized canonical quantization procedure for linear inhomogeneous media [Phys. Rev. A 43, 467 (1991)]. The explicit Hamiltonians for the second-order and third-order nonlinear quasi-steady-state processes are obtained based on this quantization procedure.

Quantum Fields in a Dielectric: Langevin and Exact Diagonalization Approaches

Felipe S. S. Rosa, Diego A. R. Dalvit, Peter W. Milonni

We derive expressions for the quantum electromagnetic field in a dispersive and dissipative dielectric medium, treating the medium as a continuum. We compare the Langevin approach with the Fano diagonalization procedure for the coupled system composed of the electromagnetic field, the dielectric medium, and the reservoir. In particular, we show that the quantized electric and magnetic fields obtained in both methods have exactly the same form. More generally, in thermal equilibrium, correlation functions computed in both methods are identical.

Electromagnetic field quantization in nonlinear and inhomogeneous dielectrics

L.-M. Duan, Guang‐Can Guo

The electromagnetic field is quantized in nonlinear media whose dielectric functions and nonlinear susceptibilities may vary with space. Given the dielectric function and nonlinear susceptibilities, the Hamiltonian of the electromagnetic field is determined completely by this quantization method. From Heisenberg equations we prove that Maxwell's equations are satisfied for the field operators. When the nonlinearity goes to zero, this quantization method returns to the generalized canonical quantization procedure developed in Ref.[1] for linear inhomogeneous media. The general formalism is illustrated by applications to quantization of the second-order and third-order nonlinear quasi-steady-state processes.

Quantization of the electromagnetic field in dielectrics

B. Hüttner, Stephen Mark Barnett

We present a fully canonical quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field in dispersive and lossy linear dielectrics. This scheme is based on a microscopic model, in which the medium is represented by a collection of interacting matter fields. We calculate the exact eigenoperators for the coupled system and express the electromagnetic field operators in terms of them. The dielectric constant of the medium is explicitly derived and is shown to satisfy the Kramers-Kronig relations. We apply these results to treat the propagation of light in dielectrics and obtain simple expressions for the electromagnetic field in the medium in terms of space-dependent creation and annihilation operators. These operators satisfy a set of equal-space commutation relations and obey spatial Langevin equations of evolution. This justifies the use of such operators in phenomenological models in quantum optics. We also obtain two interesting relationships between the group and the phase velocity in dielectrics.

Quantization of the electromagnetic field in linear Kramers-Kronig dielectrics

Stefan Scheel, L. Knöll, D.‐G. Welsch

Quantization of the phenomenological Maxwell theory of the electromagnetic field in dispersive and absorbing dielectrics has been of increasing interest over the last years since it allows for a consistent formulation of quantum optics in the presence of dielectric bodies. We show, using a Dyson-type integral representation of the Green tensor, that the quantization scheme is consistent with QED for both isotropic and anisotropic media and therefore applies to arbitrary linear Kramers-Kronig media including amplifying media.
