Symmetric Hybrid Dynamics: A canonical formulation of coupled classical-quantum dynamics

Abstract

A canonical formulation of coupled classical-quantum dynamics is presented. The theory is named symmetric hybrid dynamics. It is proved that under some general conditions its predictions are consistent with the full quantum ones. Moreover symmetric hybrid dynamics displays a fully consistent canonical structure. Namely, it is formulated over a Lie algebra of observables, time evolution is unitary and the solution of a hybrid type Schrödinger equation. A quantization prescription from classical mechanics to hybrid dynamics is presented. The quantization map is a Lie algebra isomorphism. Finally some possible applications of the theory are succinctly suggested.

Symmetric Classical Mechanics

Nuno Costa Dias, João Nuno Prata

We investigate the possibility that the semiclassical limit of quantum mechanics might be correctly described by a classical dynamical theory, other than standard classical mechanics. Using a set of classicality criteria proposed in a related paper, we show that the time evolution of a set of quantum initial data satisfying these criteria is fully consistent with the predictions of a new theory of classical dynamics. The dynamical structure of the new theory is given by the Moyal bracket. This is a Lie bracket that was first derived as the dynamical structure of the Moyal-Weyl-Wigner formulation of quantum mechanics. We present a new derivation of the Moyal bracket, this time in the context of the semiclassical limit of quantum mechanics and thus prove that both classical and quantum dynamics can be formulated in terms of the same canonical structure.

Half quantization

Nuno Costa Dias

A general dynamical system composed of two coupled sectors is considered. The initial-time configuration of one of these sectors is described by a set of classical data while the other is described by standard quantum data. These dynamical systems will be named half quantum and the aim of this paper is to derive their dynamical evolution. The standard approach would be to use quantum mechanics to make predictions for the time evolution of the half quantum initial data. The main problem is how quantum mechanics can be applied to a dynamical system whose initial time configuration is not described by a set of fully quantum data. A solution to this problem is presented and used as a guideline to obtain a general formulation of coupled classical-quantum dynamics. Finally, a quantization prescription mapping a given classical theory to the corresponding half quantum one is presented.

Linear dynamics of quantum-classical hybrids

Hans-Thomas Elze

A formulation of quantum-classical hybrid dynamics is presented which concerns the direct coupling of classical and quantum mechanical degrees of freedom. It is of interest for applications in quantum mechanical approximation schemes and may be relevant for the foundations of quantum mechanics, in particular, when it comes to experiments exploring the quantum-classical border. The present linear theory differs from the nonlinear ensemble theory of Hall and Reginatto but shares with it the fulfillment of all consistency requirements discussed in the literature, while earlier attempts have failed in this respect. Our work is based on the representation of quantum mechanics in the framework of classical analytical mechanics by A. Heslot, showing that notions of states in phase space, observables, Poisson brackets, and related canonical transformations can be naturally extended to quantum mechanics. This is suitably generalized for quantum-classical hybrids here.

General linear dynamics – quantum, classical or hybrid

H-t Elze, GIOVANNI GAMBAROTTA, F Vallone

We describe our recent proposal of a path integral formulation of classical Hamiltonian dynamics. Which leads us here to a new attempt at hybrid dynamics, which concerns the direct coupling of classical and quantum mechanical degrees of freedom. This is of practical as well as of foundational interest and no fully satisfactory solution of this problem has been established to date. Related aspects will be observed in a general linear ensemble theory, which comprises classical and quantum dynamics in the form of Liouville and von Neumann equations, respectively, as special cases. Considering the simplest object characterized by a two-dimensional state-space, we illustrate how quantum mechanics is special in several respects among possible linear generalizations.

Canonical quantum-classical hybrid systems

V. Gil, L. L. Salcedo

We study compound systems with a classical sector and a quantum sector. Among other consistency conditions we require a canonical structure, that is, a Lie bracket for the dynamical evolution of hybrid observables in the Heisenberg picture, interpolating between the Poisson bracket and the commutator. Weak and strong postulates are proposed. We explicitly construct one such hybrid bracket when the Hilbert space of the quantum sector is finite dimensional and show that it is unique if the strong postulates are enforced. The adjoint bracket for the Schrodinger picture version of the dynamics is also obtained. Unfortunately, preservation of the positivity of the density matrix under the evolution is not guaranteed. The case of a particle with classical position and momentum and quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ is discussed and the spin-orbit dynamics is worked out.
