Abstract

We define and show how to construct nonbinary quantum stabilizer codes. Our approach is based on nonbinary error bases. It generalizes the relationship between self-orthogonal codes over F/sub 4/ and binary quantum codes to one between self-orthogonal codes over F(q/sup 2/) and q-ary quantum codes for any prime power q.

Code constructions and code families for nonbinary quantum stabilizer code

Avanti Ulhas Ketkar

Stabilizer codes form a special class of quantum error correcting codes. Nonbinary quantum stabilizer codes are studied in this thesis. A lot of work on binary quantum stabilizer codes has been done. Nonbinary stabilizer codes have received much less attention. Various results on binary stabilizer codes such as various code families and general code constructions are generalized to the nonbinary case in this thesis. The lower bound on the minimum distance of a code is nothing but the minimum distance of the currently best known code. The focus of this research is to improve the lower bounds on this minimum distance. To achieve this goal, various existing quantum codes are studied that have good minimum distance. Some new families of nonbinary stabilizer codes such as quantum BCH codes are constructed. Different ways of constructing new codes from the existing ones are also found. All these constructions together help improve the lower bounds.

On the generalization of the construction of quantum codes from Hermitian self-orthogonal codes

Carlos Galindo, Fernando Hernando

Abstract Many q-ary stabilizer quantum codes can be constructed from Hermitian self-orthogonal $$q^2$$ q 2 -ary linear codes. This result can be generalized to $$q^{2 m}$$ q 2 m -ary linear codes, $$m > 1$$ m > 1 . We give a result for easily obtaining quantum codes from that generalization. As a consequence we provide several new binary stabilizer quantum codes which are records according to Grassl (Bounds on the minimum distance of linear codes, http://www.codetables.de , 2020) and new q-ary ones, with $$q \ne 2$$ q ≠ 2 , improving others in the literature.

Nonbinary Stabilizer Codes Over Finite Fields

Avanti Ulhas Ketkar, Andreas Klappenecker, Santhosh Kumar +1 more

One formidable difficulty in quantum communication and computation is to protect information-carrying quantum states against undesired interactions with the environment. To address this difficulty, many good quantum error-correcting codes have been derived as binary stabilizer codes. Fault-tolerant quantum computation prompted the study of nonbinary quantum codes, but the theory of such codes is not as advanced as that of binary quantum codes. This paper describes the basic theory of stabilizer codes over finite fields. The relation between stabilizer codes and general quantum codes is clarified by introducing a Galois theory for these objects. A characterization of nonbinary stabilizer codes over$bf F_q$in terms of classical codes over$ bf F_q^2$is provided that generalizes the well-known notion of additive codes over$ bf F_4$of the binary case. This paper also derives lower and upper bounds on the minimum distance of stabilizer codes, gives several code constructions, and derives numerous families of stabilizer codes, including quantum Hamming codes, quadratic residue codes, quantum Melas codes, quantum Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes, and quantum character codes. The puncturing theory by Rains is generalized to additive codes that are not necessarily pure. Bounds on the maximal length of maximum distance separable stabilizer codes are given. A discussion of open problems concludes this paper.

Nonbinary codeword-stabilized quantum codes

Xie Chen, Bei Zeng, Isaac L. Chuang

The codeword-stabilized (CWS) quantum code formalism presents a unifying approach to both additive and nonadditive quantum error-correcting codes [see A. Cross et al., e-print arXiv:0708.1021], but only for binary states. Here we generalize the CWS framework to the nonbinary case (of both prime and nonprime dimensions) and map the search for nonbinary quantum codes to a corresponding search problem for classical nonbinary codes with specific error patterns. We show that while the additivity properties of nonbinary CWS codes are similar to the binary case, the structural properties of the nonbinary codes differ substantially from the binary case, even for prime dimensions. In particular, we identify specific structure patterns of stabilizer groups, based on which efficient constructions might be possible for codes that encode more dimensions than any stabilizer codes of the same length and distance; similar methods cannot be applied in the binary case. Understanding of these structural properties can help prune the search space and facilitate the identification of good nonbinary CWS codes.

Constructions of new families of nonbinary quantum codes

Giuliano G. La Guardia

Three code constructions generating new families of good nonbinary quantum codes are presented in this paper. The first two ones are derived from Hermitian self-orthogonal non-narrow-sense Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes. The third one is derived from $q$-ary ($q\ensuremath{\ne}2$ is a prime power) Steane's enlargement of Calderbank-Shor-Steane codes applied to Euclidean self-orthogonal non-narrow-sense BCH codes. The quantum nonbinary BCH codes presented here have parameters better than the ones available in the literature.

Upper bounds on minimum distance of nonbinary quantum stabilizer codes

Santosh Kumar

The most popular class of quantum error correcting codes is stabilizer codes. Binary quantum stabilizer codes have been well studied, and Calderbank, Rains, Shor and Sloane (July 1998) have constructed a table of upper bounds on the minimum distance of these codes using linear programming methods. However, not much is known in the case of nonbinary stabilizer codes. In this thesis, we establish a bridge between selforthogonal classical codes over the finite field containing q2 elements and quantum codes, extending and unifying previous work by Matsumoto and Uyematsu (2000), Ashikhmin and Knill (November 2001), Kim and Walker (2004). We construct a table of upper bounds on the minimum distance of the stabilizer codes using linear programming methods that are tighter than currently known bounds. Finally, we derive code construction techniques that will help us find new codes from existing ones. All these results help us to gain a better understanding of the theory of nonbinary stabilizer codes.
