Abstract

We present a nonlinear decoherence model which models decoherence effects caused by various decohering sources in a quantum system through a nonlinear coupling between the system and its environment, and apply it to investigating decoherence in nonclassical motional states of a single trapped ion. We obtain an exactly analytic solution of the model and find very good agreement with experimental results for the population decay rate of a single trapped ion observed in the NIST experiments by Meekhof and co-workers [D. M. Meekhof et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, 1796 (1996)].

Decoherence in nonclassical motional states of a trapped ion

Mio Murao, P. L. Knight

The decoherence of nonclassical motional states of a trapped ${}^{9}{\mathrm{Be}}^{+}$ ion in a recent experiment is investigated theoretically. Sources of decoherence considered here destroy the characteristic coherent quantum dynamics of the system, but do not cause energy dissipation. Here they are first introduced phenomenologically, and then described using a microscopic Hamiltonian formulation. Theoretical predictions are compared to experimental results.

Decoherence in non-classical states of a trapped ion

Adrián A. Budini, R. L. de Matos Filho, Nicim Zagury

We assume that the origin of decoherence of non-classical motional states of a trapped ion is due to the coupling of the vibronic modes with classical stochastic electric fields and to the finite lifetime of the electronic levels. Working in the dressed basis of the effective two-level Hamiltonian, we show that these interactions lead to a dispersive-like decoherence dynamics. The numerical results agree with the experimental data reported by Meekhof et al.

In this paper we investigate the decoherence dynamics of nonclassical vibronic states of a trapped ion. We assume that the origin of decoherence is the coupling of the vibrational modes with classical stochastic electric fields and the finite lifetime of the electronic levels. Decoherence of motional states of trapped ions

We have studied the decoherence of motional-state superpositions of single trapped ions caused by their coupling to fluctuating fields. We illustrate these studies by showing how Schrödinger-cat state superpositions decohere in the presence of purposely-applied uniform stochastic electric fields and we compare these results to the decoherence caused by ambient fields in the experiments.

Measured quantum dynamics of a trapped ion

Lorenza Viola, Roberto Onofrio

The measurement process is taken into account in the dynamics of trapped ions prepared in nonclassical motional states. The induced decoherence is shown to manifest itself both in the inhibition of the internal population dynamics and in a damping of the vibrational motion without classical counterpart. Quantitative comparison with present experimental capabilities is discussed, leading to a proposal for the verification of the predicted effects.

Quantum motion of trapped ions

A single ion trapped in a harmonic potential and laser cooled at the node of a standing wave can be described in terms of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian known in quantum optics. Similar to nonclassical states of light we propose to prepare nonclassical states of the ion motion in a harmonic trap. In particular, several schemes for the preparation of Fock states are presented, and techniques for the preparation of squeezed states and coherent states of the ion motion are indicated. For an observation of these nonclassical states we propose to measure quantum collapse and revival in the population inversion of a single trapped ion.
