Abstract

A quantum particle interacting with a thin solenoid and a magnetic flux is described by a five-parameter family of Hamilton operators, obtained via the method of self-adjoint extensions. One of the parameters, the value of the flux, corresponds to the Aharonov–Bohm effect; the other four parameters correspond to the strength of a singular potential barrier. The spectrum and eigenstates are computed and the scattering problem is solved.

A pragmatic approach to the problem of the self-adjoint extension of Hamilton operators with the Aharonov-Bohm potential

Jürgen Audretsch, Ulf Jasper, Vladimir D. Skarzhinsky

We consider the problem of the self-adjoint extension of Hamilton operators for charged quantum particles in the pure Aharonov-Bohm potential (infinitely thin solenoid). We present a pragmatic approach to the problem based on the orthogonalization of the radial solutions for different quantum numbers. Then we discuss a model of a scalar particle with a magnetic moment which allows us to explain why the self-adjoint extension contains arbitrary parameters and give a physical interpretation.

Magnetic perturbations of anyonic and Aharonov–Bohm Schrödinger operators

Michele Correggi, Davide Fermi

We study the Hamiltonian describing two anyons moving in a plane in the presence of an external magnetic field and identify a one-parameter family of self-adjoint realizations of the corresponding Schrödinger operator. We also discuss the associated model describing a quantum particle immersed in a magnetic field with a local Aharonov–Bohm singularity. For a special class of magnetic potentials, we provide a complete classification of all possible self-adjoint extensions.

Pauli approximations to the self-adjoint extensions of the Aharonov–Bohm Hamiltonian

James L. Borg, Joseph V. Pulé

It is well known that the formal Aharonov–Bohm Hamiltonian operator, describing the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic vortex, has a four-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions, which reduces to a two-parameter family if one requires that the Hamiltonian commutes with the angular momentum operator. The question we study here is which of these self-adjoint extensions can considered as limits of regularized Aharonov–Bohm Hamiltonians, that is Pauli Hamiltonians in which the magnetic field corresponds to a flux tube of nonzero diameter. We show that not all the self-adjoint extensions in this two-parameter family can be obtained by these approximations, but only two one-parameter subfamilies. In these two cases we can choose the gyromagnetic ratio in the approximating Pauli Hamiltonian in such a way that we get convergence in the norm resolvent sense to the corresponding self-adjoint extension.

Aharonov-Bohm effect on the Poincaré disk

O. Lisovyy

We consider formal quantum Hamiltonian of a charged particle on the Poincaré disk in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic vortex and a uniform magnetic field. It is shown that this Hamiltonian admits a four-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions. Its resolvent and the density of states are calculated for natural values of the extension parameters.

Aharonov-Bohm effect without contact with the solenoid

César R. de Oliveira, Renan G. Romano

We add a scalar potential to the 2D Aharonov-Bohm (AB) model which properly diverges both at the solenoid border and at infinity so that the resulting operator is essentially self-adjoint and has a discrete spectrum; the former property is interpreted as no contact of the particle with the solenoid border since there is no need of boundary conditions. We study gauge transformations to get the usual periodic behavior of the AB properties as a function of the magnetic flux. The presence of the AB effect is proven through the ground state energy, which is shown to be smooth in case it is simple and with a nonzero derivative if the ground state is real valued; such properties are verified in the case of circular solenoids, for which it is shown to be a nonconstant periodic function with a minimum at integer and a maximum at half-integer circulations (at half-integer circulations, it is doubly degenerated).

Generalized boundary conditions for the Aharonov–Bohm effect combined with a homogeneous magnetic field

Pavel Exner, Pavel Šťovíček, P. Vytřas

The most general admissible boundary conditions are derived for an idealized Aharonov–Bohm flux intersecting the plane at the origin on the background of a homogeneous magnetic field. A standard technique based on self-adjoint extensions yields a four-parameter family of boundary conditions; the other two parameters of the model are the Aharonov–Bohm flux and the homogeneous magnetic field. The generalized boundary conditions may be regarded as a combination of the Aharonov–Bohm effect with a point interaction. Spectral properties of the derived Hamtonians are studied in detail.
