Abstract

NH radicals are magnetically trapped and their Zeeman relaxation and energy transport collision cross sections with helium are measured. Continuous buffer-gas loading of the trap is direct from a room-temperature molecular beam. The Zeeman relaxation (inelastic) cross section of magnetically trapped electronic, vibrational, and rotational ground state NH molecules in collisions with $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ is measured to be $3.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}19}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ at 710 mK. The NH-He energy transport cross section is also measured, indicating a ratio of diffusive to inelastic cross sections of $\ensuremath{\gamma}=7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{4}$, in agreement with recent theory [R. V. Krems, H. R. Sadeghpour, A. Dalgarno, D. Zgid, J. K\l{}os, and G. Cha\l{}asi\ifmmode \acute{n}\else \'{n}\fi{}ski, Phys. Rev. A 68, 051401 (2003)].

Cryogenic buffer-gas loading and magnetic trapping of CrH and MnH molecules

We report on the buffer-gas cooling and trapping of CrH and MnH molecules in a magnetic quadrupole trap with densities on the order of ${10}^{6}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at a temperature of $650\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mK}$. Storage times of up to $180\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ms}$ have been observed, corresponding to a 20-fold lifetime enhancement with respect to the field-free diffusion through the $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ buffer-gas. Using Monte Carlo trajectory simulations, inelastic molecule-$^{3}\mathrm{He}$ collision cross sections of $1.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}18}$ and $3.1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}17}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ are extracted for CrH and MnH, respectively. Furthermore, elastic molecule-$^{3}\mathrm{He}$ collision cross sections of $1.4(\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}14}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ are determined for both species. We conclude that the confinement time of these molecules in a magnetic trapping field is limited by inelastic collisions with the helium atoms leading to Zeeman relaxation.

Low-temperature collisions of NH(X3Σ−) molecules with He atoms in a magnetic field: Anab initiostudy

Roman V. Krems, H. R. Sadeghpour, A. Dalgarno +3 more

Ab initio calculations of cross sections and rate constants for elastic scattering and Zeeman relaxation in collisions of $\mathrm{NH}(X{}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ molecules with ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ atoms in a magnetic field are presented and the mechanism for Zeeman transitions in ground-state ${}^{3}\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ molecules is established. The potential surface for He-NH interaction is obtained using all-electron coupled-cluster calculations with single, double, and noniterative triple excitations in a basis set augmented by bond functions. The ratio of the rates for elastic energy transfer and Zeeman relaxation in NH-${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ collisions exceeds ${10}^{5}$ at temperatures between $0.5$ and 1 K.

Elastic and inelastic collisions of 2Σ molecules in a magnetic field

Jie Cui, Roman V. Krems

We calculate the cross sections for elastic scattering and Zeeman relaxation in binary collisions of molecules in the rovibrational ground state of a ${}^{2}\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ electronic state and the Zeeman state with the electron spin projection ${M}_{S}=\frac{1}{2}$ on the magnetic field axis. This is the lowest-energy state of ${}^{2}\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ molecules confined in a magnetic trap. The results are averaged over calculations with multiple molecule-molecule interaction potentials, which yield the expectation intervals for the cross sections and the elastic-to-inelastic cross-section ratios. We find that the elastic-to-inelastic cross-section ratios under conditions corresponding to trapped molecular ensembles at $T\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ K exceed 100 for the majority of ${}^{2}\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ molecules. The range of ${}^{2}\ensuremath{\Sigma}$ molecules expected to be collisionally unstable in magnetic traps at $T<{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ K is limited to molecules with the spin-rotation interaction constant ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{SR}}>0.5$ cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and the rotational constant ${B}_{e}<4$ cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$.

Molecular Beam Collisions with a Magnetically Trapped Target

Brian C. Sawyer, Benjamin Stuhl, Dajun Wang +2 more

Cold, neutral hydroxyl radicals are Stark decelerated and efficiently loaded into a permanent magnetic trap. The OH molecules are trapped in the rovibrational ground state at a density of $\ensuremath{\sim}{10}^{6}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ and temperature of 70 mK. Collision studies between the trapped OH sample and supersonic beams of atomic He and molecular ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}$ determine absolute collision cross sections. The He-OH and ${\mathrm{D}}_{2}\mathrm{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}\mathrm{OH}$ center-of-mass collision energies are tuned from $60\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ to $230\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and $145\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ to $510\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, respectively, yielding evidence of quantum threshold scattering and resonant energy transfer between colliding particles.

Zeeman relaxation of MnH ( X7Σ+ ) in collisions with He3 : Mechanism and comparison with experiment

Florence Turpin, Thierry Stoecklin, Philippe Halvick

We present a theoretical study of the Zeeman relaxation of the magnetically trappable lowest field seeking state of MnH (${}^{7}\ensuremath{\Sigma}$) in collisions with $^{3}\mathrm{He}$. We analyze the collisional Zeeman transition mechanism as a function of the final diatomic state and its variation as a function of an applied magnetic field. We show that as a result of this mechanism the levels with $\ensuremath{\Delta}{M}_{j}>2$ give negligible contributions to the Zeemam relaxation cross section. We also compare our results to the experimental cross sections obtained from the buffer-gas cooling and magnetic trapping of this molecule and investigate the dependence of the Zeeman relaxation cross section on the accuracy of the three-body interaction at ultralow energies.

Inelastic collisions of atomic thorium and molecular thorium monoxide with cold helium-3

Yat Shan Au

We measure inelastic cross sections for atomic thorium (Th) and molecular thorium monoxide (ThO) in collisions with $^3$He at temperatures near 1 K. We determine the Zeeman relaxation cross section for Th ($^3$F$_2$) to be $\\sim 2 \\times 10^{-17}$~cm$^{-2}$ at 800~mK. We study electronic inelastic processes in Th ($^3$P$_0$) and find no quenching even after $10^6$ collisions at 800~mK. We measure the vibrational quenching cross section for ThO~(X,~$\\nu=1$) to be $(7.9 \\pm 2.7) \\times 10^{-19}$~cm$^{-2}$ at 800~mK. Finally, we observe indirect evidence for ThO (X, $\\nu=0$)--$^3$He van der Waals complex formation, and measure the 3-body recombination rate constant to be $\\Gamma_3 = (8 \\pm 2) \\times 10^{-33}$~cm$^6$s$^{-1}$ at 2.4~K. The stability of the ground Th ($^3$F$_2$) state, metastable Th ($^3$P$_0$) state, and vibrational excited ThO (X, $\\nu=1$) state provides data on anisotropic interactions in new systems and opens up the possibility for further studies and experiments, including trapping.
