Abstract

We discuss the transition from a fully decoherent to a (quasi)condensate regime in a harmonically trapped weakly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose gas. By using analytic approaches and verifying them against exact numerical solutions, we find a characteristic crossover temperature and crossover atom number that depend on the interaction strength and the trap frequency. We then identify the conditions for observing either an interaction-induced crossover scenario or else a finite-size Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon characteristic of an ideal trapped 1D gas.

We discuss the transition from a fully decoherent to a (quasi-)condensate regime in a harmonically trapped weakly interacting 1D Bose gas. By using analytic approaches and verifying them against exact numerical solutions, we find a characteristic crossover temperature and crossover atom number that depend on the interaction strength and the trap frequency. We then identify the conditions for observing either an interaction-induced crossover scenario or else a finite-size Bose-Einstein condensation phenomenon characteristic of an \\textit{ideal} trapped 1D gas.

Mapping out the quasi-condensate transition through the 1D-3D dimensional crossover

Julien Armijo, T. Jacqmin, Karen V. Kheruntsyan +1 more

By measuring the density fluctuations in a highly elongated weakly interacting Bose gas, we observe and quantify the transition from the ideal gas to a quasi-condensate regime throughout the dimensional crossover from a purely 1D to an almost 3D gas. We show that that the entire transition region and the dimensional crossover are described surprisingly well by the modified Yang-Yang model. Furthermore, we find that at low temperatures the linear density at the quasi-condensate transition scales according to an interaction-driven scenario of a longitudinally uniform 1D Bose gas, whereas at high temperatures it scales according to the degeneracy-driven critical scenario of transverse condensation of a 3D ideal gas.

Density fluctuations in a very elongated Bose gas : transition towards quasi-bec and 1D-3D crossover

We also perform measurements of the third moment of atom number fluctuations. We find a positive skewness of the atom number distribution in the ideal gas regime and a reduced skewness compatible with zero in the quasi-condensate regime. For our parameters, the third moment is a thermodynamic quantity whose measurement constitutes a sensitive test of the equation of state and our results are in agreement with a modified Yang-Yang thermodynamic prediction. Moreover, we show that the measured skewness reveals the presence of true three body correlations in the system.

Universal correlations and coherence in quasi-two-dimensional trapped Bose gases

Markus Holzmann, Maguelonne Chevallier, Werner Krauth

We study the quasi-two-dimensional Bose gas in harmonic traps at temperatures above the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, where the gas is in the normal phase. We show that mean-field theory takes into account the dominant interaction effects for experimentally relevant trap geometries. Comparing with quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we quantify the onset of the fluctuation regime, where correlations beyond mean-field become important. Although the density profile depends on the microscopic parameters of the system, we show that the correlation density (the difference between the exact and the mean-field density) is accurately described by a universal expression, obtained from classical-field calculations of the homogeneous strictly two-dimensional gas. Deviations from universality, due to the finite value of the interaction or to the trap geometry, are shown to be small for current experiments. We further study coherence and pair correlations on a microscopic scale. Finite-size effects in the off-diagonal density matrix allow us to characterize the crossover from Kosterlitz-Thouless to Bose-Einstein behavior for small particle numbers. Bose-Einstein condensation occurs below a characteristic number of particles which rapidly diverges with vanishing interactions.

Mean-field interaction-induced dimensional crossover from two to three dimensions in a weakly interacting Bose gas

Jiho Noh, Jeongwon Lee, Jongchul Mun

We study an interaction-induced dimensional crossover from two to three dimensions in a weakly interacting $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A highly oblate harmonic optical dipole trap was used where we independently controlled the chemical potential and the temperature of the gas. The dimensional crossover was studied from the thermal state occupancy of atoms. In particular, the growth rate of the thermal component was measured, which contradicted the expected behavior in a fixed dimension. Crossover chemical potential and temperature were obtained at the crossover point. We further validate our observation by numerical calculations based on mean-field Hartree-Fock theory and local density approximation, which not only provided a qualitative picture of the underlying mechanism for the dimensional crossover, but also matched well with the experimentally measured crossover parameter.
