Abstract

We calculate the characteristics of ultraslow light in an inhomogeneously broadened medium. We present analytical and numerical results for the group delay as a function of power of the propagating pulse. We apply these results to explain the recently reported saturation behavior [Baldit et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 143601 (2005)] of ultraslow light in rare-earth-ion-doped crystal.

Ultraslow light propagation in rare-earth ion-doped crystal

Slow light propagation results from the large dispersion of the refraction index. We report on such effect obtained by the coherent population oscillations effect in an Erbium doped crystal. We achieve a group velocity of 2.7 m/s. The inhomogeneous broadening of the transition is used as an additional parameter to control both the group velocity and the transmission.

Ultraslow Light Propagation in an Inhomogeneously Broadened Rare-Earth Ion-Doped Crystal

We show that coherent population oscillations effect allows us to burn a narrow spectral hole (26 Hz) within the homogeneous absorption line of the optical transition of an erbium ion-doped crystal. The large dispersion of the index of refraction associated with this hole permits us to achieve a group velocity as low as 2.7 m/s with a transmission of 40%. We especially benefit from the inhomogeneous absorption broadening of the ions to tune both the transmission coefficient, from 40% to 90%, and the light group velocity from 2.7 m/s to 100 m/s.

Observations of self-induced ultraslow light in a persistent spectral hole burning medium

Joonsung Hahn, Byoung Seung HAM

We present observations of self induced ultraslow light in a persistent spectral hole-burning rare-earth doped crystal. The observed group delay (velocity) is as long as 40 micros (75 m/s), which is comparable to that obtained using electromagnetically induced transparency or coherent population oscillations. We analyze the observed ultraslow light as a function of frequency detuning, light intensity, and atom population (oscillator strength). The present observation of ultraslow light in a persistent spectral hole-burning medium gives potentials to all-optical information processing such as on-demand all-optical buffer memories.

Precursor propagation in inhomogeneous broadened media: experimental and numerical simulation

Federico Tommasi, Emilio Ignesti, Lorenzo Fini +1 more

We report experimental results on the propagation temporal characteristics of the precursor in an inhomogeneous sample. The transient behavior of a step-like pulse in an atomic hot medium is two orders of magnitude faster than the radiative broadened case up to now presented in the literature. Moreover, we show the dependence on the resonant or nonresonant condition. Numerical simulations compare favorable to experimental results.
