Interference between the halves of a double-well trap containing a Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

Interference between the halves of a double-well trap containing a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied. It is found that when the atoms in the two wells are initially in the coherent state, the intensity exhibits collapses and revivals, but it does not for the initial Fock states. Whether the initial states are in the coherent states or in a Fock state, the fidelity time has nothing to do with collision. We point out that interference and its fidelity can be adjusted experimentally by properly preparing the number and initial states of the system.

Interference of Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensate Interacting with Laser Field

Interference of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with a laser field in a double-well potential with dissipation is investigated. If properly selecting the laser field and the initial states of the atoms in the two wells,we find that the intensity exhibits revivals and collapses. The fidelity of interference is affected by the total number of atoms in the two wells and dissipation.

Fidelity of Interference Between Two Bose-Einstein Condensates with Collision and Dissipation

Zhao-Xian Yu, Jiao Zhi-Yong

Interference between the two Bose–Einstein condensates with collision and dissipation is investigated. It is found that when the two condensates are initially in the coherent state, the interference intensity is affected by the collision and dissipation, but for the initial Fock state, it is only related to the dissipation. Whether the initial state is in the coherent state or in a Fock state, the fidelity time has nothing to do with collision. For the initial coherent state, the fidelity loss rate is zero, but for the initial Fock state, it is determined by the initial particle number of the two condensates and dissipation.

Collapses and revivals in the interference between two Bose-Einstein condensates formed in small atomic samples

Ewan M. Wright, Thomas G. Wong, Matthew J. Collett +2 more

We investigate the quantum interference between two Bose-Einstein condensates formed in small atomic samples composed of a few thousand atoms both by imposing Bose broken gauge symmetry from the outset and also using an explicit model of atomic detection. In the former case we show that the macroscopic wave function collapses and revives in time, and we calculate the characteristic times for current experiments. Collapses and revivals are also predicted in the interference between two Bose-Einstein condensates which are initially in Fock states, a relative phase between the condensates being established via atomic detections corresponding to uncertainty in the number difference between them.

Phase dynamics and Bose–broken symmetry in atomic Bose–Einstein condensates

Daniel F. Walls, Matthew J. Collett, T. Wong +2 more

Collisions lead to the collapse and revival of the interference fringes between two atomic Bose–Einstein condensates. We study the collapses and revivals of the relative phase between the condensates for two different initial states. One state invokes Bose–broken symmetry allowing us to write the wavefunction as a superposition of total number (of both condensates) states whereas the other does not.
