Abstract

We report the calculation of the interspecies scattering length for the sodium-rubidium (Na-Rb) system. We present improved hybrid potentials for the singlet ${X}^{1}\ensuremath{\Sigma}{}^{+}$ and triplet ${a}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ ground states of the NaRb molecule, and calculate the singlet and triplet scattering lengths ${a}_{s}$ and ${a}_{t}$ for the isotopomers ${}^{23}{\mathrm{Na}}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and ${}^{23}{\mathrm{Na}}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}.$ Using these values, we assess the prospects for producing a stable two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in the Na-Rb system.

Collisional Properties of Ultracold K-Rb Mixtures

G. Ferrari, M. Inguscio, W. Jastrzȩbski +3 more

We determine the interspecies $s$-wave triplet scattering length ${a}_{3}$ for all K-Rb isotopic mixtures by measuring the elastic cross section for collisions between $^{\mathrm{41}}\mathrm{K}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{R}\mathrm{b}$ in different temperature regimes. The positive value ${a}_{3}=+{163}_{\ensuremath{-}12}^{+57}{a}_{0}$ ensures the stability against collapse of binary $^{41}\mathrm{K}\ensuremath{-}^{87}\mathrm{R}\mathrm{b}$ Bose-Einstein condensates. For the fermion-boson mixture $^{40}\mathrm{K}\ensuremath{-}^{87}\mathrm{R}\mathrm{b}$, we obtain a large and negative scattering length which implies an efficient sympathetic cooling of the fermionic species down to the degenerate regime.

Potassium scattering lengths and prospects for Bose-Einstein condensation and sympathetic cooling

Robin Côté, A. Dalgarno, H. Wang +1 more

We have determined the scattering lengths for collisions between the different isotopes of two potassium atoms in singlet and triplet molecular states of ${\mathrm{K}}_{2}$. We show that for the two bosonic species ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ and ${}^{41}\mathrm{K}$ the scattering lengths are positive, hence, leading to stable condensates. The fermionic isotope ${}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ also has positive scattering lengths, but the triplet value is nearly zero, hence, a quasi-non-interacting fermionic gas. We also give results for the interspecies collisions. We conclude that double condensates of ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ and ${}^{41}\mathrm{K}$ are possible for purely spin-polarized atoms, and sympathetic cooling between the bosonic ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ and the fermionic ${}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ will be efficient due to low spin-flip rates and a sizable interspecies scattering length.

Calculation of Elastic Scattering Properties in Ultracold Fermi–Bose and Bose–Bose Rb–K Vapor

Mustafa Kemal Öztürk, Süleyman Özçelik

The calculation of the elastic scattering properties of mixtures composed of ultracold Rb–K atoms is reported and compared with experimental results in detail. The improved potentials for both the singlet and triplet molecular states of Rb–K are presented, and the scattering lengths a t and the effective range r e are calculated with numeric and semiclassical methods for Rb–K in the triplet and singlet state. In addition, the convergence of these scattering properties depending on a K 0 parameter is investigated using quantum defect theory. Other results of the evaporative cooling that include the cross section and the spin–charge cross section, the rate coefficient as a function of the energy and ultralow temperature are also presented in this study.

Observation of Feshbach resonances between ultracold Na and Rb atoms

Fudong Wang, Dezhi Xiong, Xiaoke Li +2 more

We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of ${}^{23}$Na and ${}^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several $s$- and $p$-wave resonances are identified by observing high inelastic losses and temperature increases for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two $s$-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in their lowest-energy levels are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model which also refines the ground-state interaction potentials between ${}^{23}$Na and ${}^{87}$Rb. This work opens up the prospect for preparing ultracold ensembles of ground-state bosonic NaRb molecules which are chemically stable and can provide strong dipolar interactions.

Calculation of Elastic Scattering Properties in an Ultra-Cold 85 Rb– 85 Rb Vapour

M. Kemal Oztürk, Süleyman Özçelik

We report the calculation of the same-species elastic scattering properties for the ultracold rubidium–rubidium ( 85 Rb– 85 Rb) system and the results are compared with other theoretical and experimental results in detail. We present an improved potential for triplet ground states of the Rb 2 molecule, and calculate the scattering lengths a t and the effective range r e using WKB and Numerov methods for two rubidium-85 collisions in the triplet state. Also, we investigate the convergence of these scattering properties, i.e. the dependence on core radius and K 0 parameter using quantum defect theory and the analytic calculations of scattering length obtained by Szmytkowski. In addition, we present evaporative cooling and other results that include phase shift and cross section at zero energy limit.

Prospects for Mixed-Isotope Bose-Einstein Condensates in Rubidium

James P. Burke, John L. Bohn, Brett D. Esry +1 more

We calculate binary collision parameters for mixtures of ultracold gases of ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ and ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. We predict a large positive triplet scattering length for mixed-isotope collisions, which implies that a stable mixed-isotope double condensate can be formed by sympathetic evaporative cooling. Moreover, collisions between ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ and ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in the lowest hyperfine manifold exhibit magnetic-field-induced Feshbach resonances which should allow partial control of the interaction between condensates. These considerations make Rb an ideal system for the study of interpenetrating bosonic superfluids.
