Enhanced Kerr nonlinearity for self-action via atomic coherence in a four-level atomic system

Hong, T, Jack, M W, Yamashita, M +1 more

Enhancement of optical Kerr nonlinearity for self-action by electro-magnetically induced transparency in a four-level atomic system including dephasing between the ground states is studied in detail by solving the density matrix equations for the atomic levels. We discern three major contributions, from energy shifts of the ground states induced by the probe light, to the third-order susceptibility in the four-level system. In this four-level system with the frequency-degenerate probes, quantum interference amongst the three contributions can, not only enhance the third-order susceptibility more effectively than in the three-level system with the same characteristic parameters, but also make the ratio between its real and imaginary part controllable. Due to dephasing between the two ground states and constructive quantum interference, the most effective enhancement generally occurs at an offset that is determined by the atomic transition frequency difference and the coupling Rabi frequency.

Enhanced self-Kerr nonlinearity in spontaneous emission

Xiang-an Yan, Liqiang Wang, Bao-yin Yin +1 more

We propose a new scheme for achieving giant enhancement of the self-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level Y-type atom with two highest nearly degenerate lying levels. We have found that, owing to the quantum interference effect that originates from spontaneous emission from two closely lying levels, large Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved under appropriate conditions. In particular, in addition to the amplitudes, the phases of the applied fields also affect the Kerr nonlinearity. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of some extra atomic coherence terms induced by the spontaneously generated coherence. We present a physical understanding of our numerical results using analytical explanation.

Absorption spectra and enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level system

In a coherent system, enhanced nonlinearity can be reached via far-detuned coupling fields in the presence of Autler--Townes splitting. We explore the absorption spectra and the Kerr nonlinearity of the coherent system via the interaction between a four-level atomic system and triple fields. We obtain the absorption spectra with double, triple and even quadruple peaks which depend on both the magnitude and the difference of the coupling fields. The Kerr nonlinearity always remains reversely correlated with the absorption spectra. We find that the large coupling detunings can lead to a significant growth of the Kerr nonlinearity and the degenerate four-wave mixing. Both the Kerr nonlinearity and the four-wave mixing can be managed by adjusting the detunings of the coupling fields.
