Abstract

A combined method for analyzing quantum dynamical equations which uses the Bohmian mechanics and the quantum phase space representation is proposed. It is based on a presentation of the wave function in phase space in a polar form. The combined method is very effective for comparison of classical and quantum dynamics for polynomial potentials of order no higher than second. Application for the harmonic oscillator and quartic double well potential is performed. Quantum fluxes and particle energy are derived by means of the proposed method.

On the dynamics of coupled Bohmian and phase-space variables: A new hybrid quantum-classical approach

Irène Burghardt, Gérard Parlant

A new approach to the coupling of quantum and classical dynamics is developed, by combining a hydrodynamic, Bohmian description for the quantum subsystem with a Liouville-space description for the classical subsystem. To this end, partial hydrodynamic moments are introduced, the dynamics of which is determined by a hierarchy of equations derived from the quantum Liouville equation. We focus on pure states (wave functions) and introduce a trajectory representation in a hybrid hydrodynamic-Liouvillian phase space. The interleaved trajectory dynamics is guided by a new type of quantum force. For illustration, we consider a pair of bilinearly coupled harmonic oscillators, for which the method is exact.

Monte Carlo Bohmian Dynamics from Trajectory Stability Properties

Jian Liu, Nancy Makri

It is shown that the quantum force in the Bohmian formulation of quantum mechanics can be related to the stability properties of the given trajectory. In turn, the evolution of the stability properties is governed by higher order derivatives of the quantum potential, leading to an infinite hierarchy of coupled differential equations whose solution specifies completely all aspects of the dynamics. Neglecting derivatives of the quantum potential beyond a certain order allows truncation of the hierarchy, leading to approximate Bohmian trajectories. Use of the method in conjunction with Bohmian initial value formulations [ J. Chem. Phys. 2003, 119, 60] gives rise to simple position-space representations of observables or time correlation functions. These are analogous to approximate quasiclassical expressions based on the Wigner or Husimi phase space density but involve lower dimensional integrals with smoother integrands and avoid the costly evaluation of phase space transforms. The lowest-order version of the truncated hierarchy can capture large corrections to classical mechanical treatments and yields (with fewer trajectories) results that are somewhat more accurate than those based on quasiclassical phase space treatments.

Quantum Statistical Mechanics in Classical Phase Space. Test Results for Quantum Harmonic Oscillators

Phil Attard

The von Neumann trace form of quantum statistical mechanics is transformed to an integral over classical phase space. Formally exact expressions for the resultant position-momentum commutation function are given. A loop expansion for wave function symmetrization is also given. The method is tested for quantum harmonic oscillators. For both the boson and fermion cases, the grand potential and the average energy obtained by numerical quadrature over classical phase space are shown to agree with the known analytic results. A mean field approximation is given which is suitable for condensed matter, and which allows the quantum statistical mechanics of interacting particles to be obtained in classical phase space.

Investigation of the dynamics of two coupled oscillators with mixed quantum-classical methods

Jingrui Li, Clemens Woywod, Valérie Vallet +1 more

The dynamics of two coupled oscillators can become quite complex if anharmonic potential energy functions are employed. This type of system therefore represents a good model for an investigation of the performance of mixed quantum-classical methods. In this work, the motion of two coupled particles with a mass ratio of one to ten is studied with three different mixed quantum-classical methods in the presence of anharmonic potential terms for a comparison with exact quantum mechanical calculations. The mixed quantum-classical approaches include the multitrajectory Ehrenfest, the mixed quantum-classical Bohmian (MQCB), and the so-called coupled Schrödinger equations (CSE) formalisms. The analysis shows that while the description of a weakly anharmonic system by the Ehrenfest and MQCB schemes is accurate if proper sampling techniques are applied, both approximations break down rapidly if the anharmonic terms are increased. The performance of the simple CSE prescription, which corresponds to a reduction of the full two-dimensional wave function to two one-dimensional wave functions representing two quantum oscillators coupled via the potential energy in a classical fashion, decreases if the width of the initial wave packet is enlarged. The dependence of the CSE method on the diffuseness of the initial wave packet is therefore opposite to that of the MQCB method, which is more accurate for wide wave packets. Overall, the multitrajectory Ehrenfest ansatz is found to be most successful in reproducing the exact quantum results.

Numerical Study of Quantum Wave Packet in Meshless Particle Method

Fumiaki HIRONO, Misako IWASAWA, Satoru S. Kano +1 more

The particle method has no restriction on the particle arrangement, where the calculation is performed. The purpose is, by using this feature, to develop the method to analyze the dynamics of the electronic state. In order to describe the time evolution of the electronic state, we have developed a new method to solve the time-dependent wave equation, using the Bohmian that is very compatible with the particle method. In this form, there is also numerical instability in the region, where the value of the wave function is very small. We have applied our technique to the wave packet dynamics on harmonic potential and the analysis of interference by double slits as a simple system with analytical solution and easy to compare accuracy, and realized that both results are in good agreement.

Analytical solution for quantum quartic oscillator in phase space

A. X. Martins, T. M. Rocha Filho, R. G. G. Amorim +3 more

In this work, we address the quartic quantum oscillator in phase space using two approaches: computational and algebraic methods. In order to achieve such an aim, we built simplistic unitary representations for Galilei group, as a consequence the Schrödinger equation is derived in the phase space. In this context, the amplitudes of quasi-probability are associated with the Wigner function. In a computational way, we apply the techniques of Lie methods. As a result, we determine the solution of the quantum oscillator in the phase space and calculate the corresponding Wigner function. We also calculated the negativity parameter of the analyzed system.
