Abstract

We present an optical trap for atoms which we have developed for precision spectroscopy measurements. Cold atoms are captured in a dark region of space inside a blue-detuned hollow laser beam formed by an axicon. We analyse the light potential in a ray optics picture and experimentally demonstrate trapping of laser-cooled metastable xenon atoms.

Summary form only given. Precision optical spectroscopy requires good control over the motion of the atoms to reduce Doppler broadening. It also benefits from long interaction times between the probe radiation and the atoms in a perturbation-free environment. We have implemented an optical trap that captures cold atoms in a region of darkness. Such a set-up is critical for measuring the fundamental interactions of nature through precise spectroscopic studies.

Hollow-beam atom tunnel

Yonho Song

One of the more promising proposals for guiding and focusing neutral atoms involves dark hollow laser beams. When the frequency of the laser is detuned to the blue of resonance, the dipole force the atoms feel in the light confines them to the dark core where the atoms can be transported with minimal interaction with the light. The ability of the all-light atom guides to transport large number of ultracold atoms for long distances without physical walls leads to the possibility of a versatile tool for atom lithography, atom interferometry, atomic spectroscopy as well as for transporting and manipulating Bose-Einstein condensates. Furthermore since the atoms transported in all-light atom guides do not come into contact with matter, they can in principle be used to transport antimatter as well. In this work a hollow beam atom tunnel is demonstrated by guiding magneto-optically trapped ultracold cesium atoms with a hollow core laser beam. The 1mm diameter diffractionless hollow beam used to construct the atom tunnel was generated from a TEM00 mode diode laser at 852 nm using a series of axicons and simple lenses. The axicon generated hollow beam has a dark core extended for most of its diameter and

Possibility of an Optically-Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensation

Jianping Yin, Yifu Zhu, Yuzhu Wang

We propose a novel gravito-optical atom trap composed of a blue-detuned, conical dark-hollow-beam propagating upward and the gravity field. When cold atoms are loaded into the conical dark-hollow-beam from a magnetic-optical trap and bounce inside the hollow beam, they experience an efficient hollow-beam induced Sisyphus cooling and repumping-beam induced geometric cooling. Our investigation shows that an ultracold and dense 87 Rb atomic sample with an equilibrium 3D temperature of about 1 μK can be obtained and the appearance of an optically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensation may be possible in this pure optical trap.

Pyramidal-hollow-beam dipole trap for alkali atoms

Yin Jian-Ping, Gao Wei-jian, Wang Yu-Zhu +2 more

We propose a dark gravito-optical dipole trap, for alkali atoms, consisting of a blue-detuned, pyramidal-hollow laser beam propagating upward and the gravity field. When cold atoms from a magneto-optical trap are loaded into the pyramidal-hollow beam and bounce inside the pyramidal-hollow beam, they experience efficient Sisyphus cooling and geometric cooling induced by the pyramidal-hollow beam and the weak repumping beam propagating downward. Our study shows that an ultracold and dense atomic sample with an equilibrium 3D momentum of 3 ¯ and an atomic density above the point of Bose-Einstein condensation may be obtained in this pure optical trap. Sensitive spectroscopy and atom dynamics in a single beam optical trap

Nir Friedman, Lev Khaykovich, Stanislav B. Baluschev +4 more

Summary form only given. Cold atoms are trapped in a dark optical trap which is created by a rapidly (up to 400 kHz) scanning far-detuned laser beam, where the scanning speed is much faster then any characteristic atomic motional time scale. This concept offers the possibility to form nearly arbitrary-shaped effective optical potentials and also to change them in real time. We report on spectroscopic and dynamical measurements in such a rotating beam trap.
