Pairing in low-density Fermi gases

Abstract

We consider pairing in a dilute system of fermions with a short-range interaction. While the theory is ill-defined for a contact interaction, the BCS equations can be solved in the leading order of low-energy effective field theory. The integrals are evaluated with the dimensional regularization technique, giving analytic formulas relating the pairing gap, the density, and the energy density to the two-particle scattering length.

Ground-State Energy of a Dilute Fermi Gas

Élliott H. Lieb, Robert Seiringer, Jan Philip Solovej

Recent developments in the physics of low density trapped gases make it worthwhile to verify old, well known results that, while plausible, were based on perturbation theory and assumptions about pseudopotentials. We use and extend recently developed techniques to give a rigorous derivation of the asymptotic formula for the ground state energy of a dilute gas of $N$ fermions interacting with a short-range, positive potential of scattering length $a$. For spin 1/2 fermions, this is $E \sim E^0 + (\hbar^2/2m) 2 πN ρa$, where $E^0$ is the energy of the non-interacting system and $ρ$ is the density.

Ground-state energy of the low-density Fermi gas

We use and extend recently developed techniques to give a rigorous derivation of the asymptotic formula for the ground-state energy of a dilute gas of $N$ fermions interacting with a short-range, positive potential of scattering length $a$. For spin-$1∕2$ fermions, this is $E\ensuremath{\sim}{E}^{0}+({\ensuremath{\hbar}}^{2}∕2m)2\ensuremath{\pi}N\ensuremath{\varrho}a$, where ${E}^{0}$ is the energy of the noninteracting system and $\ensuremath{\varrho}$ is the density. A similar formula holds in two dimensions (2D), with $\ensuremath{\varrho}a$ replaced by $\ensuremath{\varrho}∕\ensuremath{\mid}\mathrm{ln}(\ensuremath{\varrho}{a}^{2})\ensuremath{\mid}$. Obviously this 2D energy is not the expectation value of a density-independent pseudopotential.

The Dilute Fermi Gas via Bogoliubov Theory

Marco Falconi, Emanuela L. Giacomelli, Christian Hainzl +1 more

We study the ground state properties of interacting Fermi gases in the dilute regime, in three dimensions. We compute the ground state energy of the system, for positive interaction potentials. We recover a well-known expression for the ground state energy at second order in the particle density, which depends on the interaction potential only via its scattering length. The first proof of this result has been given by Lieb, Seiringer and Solovej (Phys Rev A 71:053605, 2005). In this paper, we give a new derivation of this formula, using a different method; it is inspired by Bogoliubov theory, and it makes use of the almost-bosonic nature of the low-energy excitations of the systems. With respect to previous work, our result applies to a more regular class of interaction potentials, but it comes with improved error estimates on the ground state energy asymptotics in the density.

Pairing in two-dimensional Fermi gases with a coordinate-space potential

Tash Zielinski, Bernard Ross, Alexandros Gezerlis

In this work we theoretically study pairing in two-dimensional Fermi gases, a system which is experimentally accessible using cold atoms. We start by deriving the mean-field pairing gap equation for a coordinate-space potential with a finite interaction range and proceed to solve this numerically. We find that for sufficiently short effective ranges the answer is identical to the zero-range one. We then use diffusion Monte Carlo to evaluate the total energy for many distinct particle numbers; we employ several variational parameters to produce a good ground-state energy and then use these results to extract the pairing gap across a number of interaction strengths in the strongly interacting two-dimensional crossover. Extracting the gap via the odd-even energy staggering, our microscopic results can be used as benchmarks for other theoretical approaches.

Correlations in the low-density Fermi gas: Fermi-liquid state, dimerization, and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing

Hsuan‐Hao Fan, E. Krotscheck, T. Lichtenegger +2 more

We present ground-state calculations for low-density Fermi gases described by two model interactions, an attractive square-well potential and a Lennard-Jones potential, of varying strength. We use the optimized Fermi-hypernetted chain integral equation method, which has been proved to provide, in the density regimes of interest here, an accuracy of better than 1%. We first examine the low-density expansion of the energy and compare it with the exact answer of H. Huang and C. N. Yang [Phys. Rev. 105, 767 (1957)]. It is shown that a locally correlated wave function of the Jastrow-Feenberg type does not recover the quadratic term in the expansion of the energy in powers of ${a}_{0}{k}_{F}$, where ${a}_{0}$ is the vacuum $s$-wave scattering length and ${k}_{F}$ the Fermi wave number. The problem is cured by adding second-order perturbation corrections in a correlated basis. Going to higher densities and/or more strongly coupled systems, we encounter an instability of the normal state of the system which is characterized by a divergence of the in-medium scattering length. We interpret this divergence as a phonon-exchange-driven dimerization of the system, similar to what occurs at zero density when the vacuum scattering length ${a}_{0}$ diverges. We then study, in the stable regime, the superfluid gap and its dependence on the density and the interaction strength. We identify two corrections to low-density expansions: One is medium corrections to the pairing interaction, and the other is finite-range corrections. We show that the most important finite-range corrections are a direct manifestation of the many-body nature of the system.

Dilute Fermi Gases with Large Scattering Lengths: Atomic Gases and Neutron Matter

Joseph Carlson

Dilute Fermi gases with large scattering lengths are intriguing physical systems which are just now becoming accessible in laboratory experiments with cold trapped atoms. Their properties are closely related to those of the dilute neutron‐rich matter which may be present in the surface of neutron stars. Fermi systems with such strong short‐range attractive forces lie between traditional BCS theories with small gaps and those where the fermions are tightly bound into pairs, yielding composite bosons. We discuss the Quantum Monte Carlo methods used to study such systems, and report results for the ground‐state energy, the superfluid gap, and other properties. In particular, we compare results with those of neutron matter at subnuclear densities.
