WKB approximation for multichannel barrier penetrability

Abstract

Using the method of the local transmission matrix, we generalize the well-known WKB formula for barrier penetrability to multichannel systems. We compare the WKB penetrability with a solution of the coupled-channels equations, and show that the WKB formula works well at energies well below the lowest adiabatic barrier. We also discuss the eigenchannel approach to a multichannel tunneling, which may improve the performance of the WKB formula near and above the barrier.

Tunneling near the base of a barrier

Christopher Eltschka, Hanno Friedrich, M. J. Moritz +1 more

Generalized WKB connection formulas are used to derive the transmission amplitude describing tunneling through a potential barrier via two isolated classical turning points. The resulting formulas correctly reproduce the behavior in the vicinity of the base of the barrier where the tunneling probability vanishes exactly, and where formulas available to date fail.

A WKB-Type Approximation to the Schrödinger Equation

Stanley C. Miller, Robert H. Good

A method of approximating solutions of the one-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation is presented in this paper. The method closely resembles the usual WKB approximation. Whereas in the ordinary WKB method the exponential function is used as the basis of the approximation, in this paper the solutions of an arbitrary Schr\"odinger equation are used. The general advantage is that by proper choice of the arbitrary equation an improved approximation can be obtained. The method is illustrated by treating the potential well and potential barrier problems when there are two turning points. The approximations to the wave functions are continuous even across the turning points. The barrier transmission problem is treated uniformly for energies above and below the peak of the barrier.

WKB - Not So Bad After All

C. S. Ng

It was found recently that tunneling probabilities over a barrier is roughly twice as large as that given by standard WKB formula. Here we explained how this come from and showed that WKB method does give a good approximation over almost entire energy range provided that we use appropriate connection relations.

Smooth double barriers in quantum mechanics

Avik Dutt, Sayan Kar

Quantum mechanical tunneling across smooth double barrier potentials is modeled using Gaussian functions and is analyzed numerically and by using the WKB approximation. The transmission probability, resonances as a function of incident particle energy, and their dependence on the barrier parameters are obtained for various cases. We also discuss the tunneling time, for which we obtain generalizations of the known results for rectangular barriers.

Tunneling, Stochastic Quantization, and Escape over a Barrier

David Leo Weaver

It is shown that quantum mechanical barrier penetration (tunneling) is related to classical escape over a related potential barrier, and that therefore the WKB approximation for the former and Kramers approximation for the latter are equivalent.
