Abstract

We develop and test efficient approximations to estimate ground state correlations associated with low- and zero-energy modes. The scheme is an extension of the generator coordinate method (GCM) within Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). We show that the GOA fails in non-Cartesian topologies and presents a topologically correct generalization of the GOA (topGOA). A random-phase-approximation like (RPA-like) correction is derived as the small amplitude limit of topGOA, called topRPA. Using exactly solvable models, the topGOA and topRPA schemes are compared with conventional approaches (GCM-GOA, RPA, Lipkin-Nogami projection) for rotational-vibrational motion and for particle-number projection. The results shows that the new schemes perform very well in all regimes of coupling.

Beyond mean field study of excited states: Analysis within the Lipkin model

A. P. Severyukhin, M. Bender, P.-H. Heenen

We compare the generator coordinate method (GCM) and the random-phase approximation (RPA) in the framework of the exactly solvable Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. We show that the discretized GCM works quite well and permits to obtain results close to the exact results with a small number of discretization points.

Quadrupole correlation energy by the generator coordinate method

K. Hagino, G. F. Bertsch, P.‐G. Reinhard

We investigate the accuracy of several schemes to calculate ground-state correlation energies using the generator coordinate technique. Our test bed for the study is the sd-interacting boson model, equivalent to a six-level Lipkin-type model. We find that the simplified projection of a triaxial generator coordinate state using the ${S}_{3}$ subgroup of the rotation group is not very accurate in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian of interest. On the other hand, a full rotational projection of an axial generator coordinate state gives remarkable accuracy. We also discuss the validity of the simplified treatment using the extended Gaussian overlap approximation, and show that it works reasonably well when the number of boson is 4 or larger.

A transport model description of Time-Dependent Generator Coordinate under Gaussian overlap approximation

Fangyuan Wang, Yingxun Zhang, Z. P. Li

In this work, we derived a transport equation based on a generalized equation of time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM) under the Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). The transport equation is obtained by using quantum-mechanics phase space distributions under a ``quasi-particle" picture and strategy of Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkood-Yvon (BBGKY) hierarchy. The theoretical advantage of this transport equation is that time evolution of $s$-body phase space density distribution is coupled with $s+1$-body phase space density distributions, and thus, non-adiabatic effects and dynamical fluctuations could be involved by more collective degrees and entanglement of phase space trajectories. In future, we will perform the numerical calculations for fission nuclei after obtaining collective inertia and potential energy surface (PES).

Improved treatment of ground-state correlations: Modified random phase approximation

Nguyen Dinh Dang, Vladimir Zelevinsky

A method is proposed to improve the treatment of the ground-state correlations in a finite Fermi system compared with the standard random phase approximation (RPA) or earlier suggested renormalized RPA. The correlations lead to nonzero quasiparticle occupancies in the ground state. The method employs modified quasiparticles obtained by a canonical transformation of usual quasiparticles explicitly involving the quasiparticle occupation numbers. A set of equations is derived, which allows one to determine these occupation numbers along with the RPA modes. The formalism is illustrated with the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, and a model for superconducting pairing at a finite temperature. With the new approach, the ground-state correlations are significantly reduced, the energy of the first excited state becomes closer to the exact solution around the region where the RPA collapses, and the superconducting gap monotonously decreases instead of the sharp phase transition. We discuss the effective equivalence of the interaction effects and variation of temperature for the ground-state correlations.

Ordinary and Higher Random-Phase Approximations on the Luttinger Model

N. J. Kupelian

The exactly solvable Luttinger model for a system of one-dimensional, massless, two-component fermions interacting via general two-body forces is used as a test case for a systematically generated sequence of decoupling approximations commonly referred to as random-phase approximations (RPA) of which the simple RPA is the lowest. It is found, irrespective of both the nature and strength of the interaction, that the exact (collective) spectrum, as well as the exact correlation energy, can already be obtained in the simple RPA, and furthermore, that the next higher RPA gives a vanishing correction to these quantities. It is also shown, quite in contradistinction to the exact result, that the free-gas momentum distribution ${\overline{n}}_{k}$ persists in the second RPA as well as in the first, thereby eliminating the higher RPA as a possible approach to the calculation of ${\overline{n}}_{k}$. Thus, in the context of this particular model, although the first few orders of RPA are highly effective for calculating the excitation spectrum and correlation energy, they are sensibly powerless in their ability to predict any variation in structure beyond that of the free-gas distribution, a result which most probably holds as well in the realistic three-dimensional case.

Scalar ground-state observables in the random phase approximation

Calvin W. Johnson, Ionel Stetcu

We calculate the ground-state expectation value of scalar observables in the matrix formulation of the random phase approximation (RPA). Our expression, derived using the quasiboson approximation, is a straightforward generalization of the RPA correlation energy. We test the reliability of our expression by comparing against full diagonalization in $0\ensuremath{\Elzxh}\ensuremath{\omega}$ shell-model spaces. In general the RPA values are an improvement over mean-field (Hartree-Fock) results, but are not always consistent with shell-model results. We also consider exact symmetries broken in the mean-field state and whether or not they are restored in RPA.
