EFFECTIVE NUCLEON-NUCLEON INTERACTION AND FERMI LIQUID THEORY

Abstract

We present two novel relations between the quasiparticle interaction in nuclear matter and the unique low momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction in vacuum. These relations provide two independent constraints on the Fermi liquid parameters of nuclear matter. Moreover, the new constraints define two combinations of Fermi liquid parameters, which are invariant under the renormalisation group flow in the particle-hole channels. Using empirical values for the spin-independent Fermi liquid parameters, we are able to compute the major spin-dependent ones by imposing the new constraints as well as the Pauli principle sum rules.

The nucleon interaction and neutron matter from the renormalization group

A. Schwenk, Bengt L. Friman, S. K. Bogner +2 more

We show that the renormalization group decimation of modern nucleon potential models to low momenta results in a unique nucleon interaction V_{low k}. This interaction is free of short-ranged singularities and can be used directly in many-body calculations. The RG scaling properties follow directly from the invariance of the scattering phase shifts. We discuss the RG treatment of Fermi liquids. The RG equation for the scattering amplitude in the two particle-hole channels is given at zero temperature. The flow equations are simplified by retaining only the leading term in an expansion in small momentum transfers. The RG flow is illustrated by first studying a system of spin-polarized fermions in a simple model. Finally, results for neutron matter are presented by employing the unique low momentum interaction V_{low k} as initial condition of the flow. The RG approach yields the amplitude for non-forward scattering, which is of great interest for calculations of transport properties and superfluid gaps in neutron star interiors. The methods used can also be applied to condensed matter systems in the absence of long-ranged interactions.

Fermi-Liquid Theory and Pomeranchuk Instabilities: Fundamentals and New Developments

A. V. Chubukov, A. Klein, D. L. Maslov

Abstract This paper is a short review on the foundations and recent advances in the microscopic Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. We demonstrate that this theory is built on five identities, which follow from conservation of the total charge (particle number), spin, and momentum in a translationally and SU(2)-invariant FL. These identities allow one to express the effective mass and quasiparticle residue in terms of an exact vertex function and also impose constraints on the “quasiparticle” and “incoherent” (or “low-energy” and “high-energy”) contributions to the observable quantities. Such constraints forbid certain Pomeranchuk instabilities of a FL, e.g., towards phases with order parameters that coincide with charge and spin currents. We provide diagrammatic derivations of these constraints and of the general (Leggett) formula for the susceptibility in arbitrary angular momentum channel, and illustrate the general relations through simple examples treated in perturbation theory.

Renormalization group approach to neutron matter: quasiparticle interactions, superfluid gaps and the equation of state

A. Schwenk, Friman, B L, G. E. Brown

Renormalization group methods can be applied to the nuclear many-body problem using the approach proposed by Shankar. We start with the two-body low momentum interaction V_{low k} and use the RG flow from the particle-hole channels to calculate the full scattering amplitude in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. This is a new straightforward approach to the many-body problem which is applicable also to condensed matter systems without long-ranged interactions, such as liquid 3He. We derive the one-loop renormalization group equations for the quasiparticle interaction and scattering amplitude at zero temperature. The RG presents an elegant method to maintain all momentum scales and preserve the antisymmetry of the scattering amplitude. As a first application we solve the RG equations for neutron matter. The resulting quasiparticle interaction includes effects due to the polarization of the medium, the so called induced interaction of Babu and Brown. We present results for the Fermi liquid parameters, the equation of state of neutron matter and the 1S0 superfluid pairing gap.

Realistic and effective interactions in the study of nuclear matter

V. Somà

The equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter is addressed starting both from a realistic interaction derived from nucleon-nucleon scattering processes and from a low-momentum effective potential. The approach is based on finite temperature Green’s functions. The internal energy per particle is estimated from the summation of diagrams and through the Galitskii-Koltun’s sum rule. At present, there is not a unique and reliable theory of nuclear interactions. From the study of nucleon-nucleon scattering processes different models for the basic interaction between nucleons have been developed, but difficulties arise when they are used in calculations which aim to reproduce the properties of bound nuclei. These models all reproduce the experimental N-N phase shifts up to the threshold for pion production with high accuracy, but differ in the short-wavelength region, where less experimental constraints are available. In deriving the properties of dense nuclear matter, if we start from a bare N-N potential we have to take into account the complex correlations induced

Energy Weighted Sum Rules for Spin-Dependent Excitations of Nuclei

S. Nishizaki, K. Andō

An expression of the RPA-energy weighted sum rule for spin-dependent multipole operators is derived and used to relate the sum rule value to the Fermi liquid parameters in nuclear matter, including the effect of the tensor force. Numerical results for the ‘exchange’ contribution to the sum rule are presented and discussed.
