Abstract

The problem of the pairing interaction is dealt with even Grassmann variables in the hamiltonian framework. Eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of angular momentum are given in terms of single particle and collective bosonic fields.

The pairing Hamiltonian for one pair of nucleons bound in a potential well

M. B. Barbaro, L. Fortunato, Alfredo Molinari +1 more

The problem of one pair of identical nucleons sitting in ${\cal N}$ single particle levels of a potential well and interacting through the pairing force is treated introducing, in the Hamiltonian formalism, even Grassmann variables. The eigenvectors are analytically expressed solely in terms of these with coefficients fixed by the eigenvalues and the single particle energies. For these a specific model is needed: in the case of the harmonic oscillator well, for any strength of the pairing interaction, an accurate expression is derived for both the collective eigenvalue and for those trapped in between the single particle levels. Notably the latter are labelled through an index upon which they depend parabolically.

Are q-bosons suitable for the description of correlated fermion pairs?

D Bonatsis

In a single-j shell the author considers fermion pair and multipole operators coupled to zero angular momentum. The commutation relations of these operators can be satisfied up to first-order corrections by suitably defined q-bosons, onto which the fermion pair operators are mapped. After performing the same mapping to a simple pairing Hamiltonian, it is proved that the pairing energies are also correctly reproduced up to the same order. The small parameter used (T=In Q) is found to be inversely proportional to the size of the shell.

a Theoretical Study of a System of Interacting Bosons at Low Temperatures.

James Shepherd Spratt

A self consistent field approach is developed for truncating the infinite set of equations obtained in apply ing the equation of motion method to interacting systems. The operator which is assumed to create elementary excita tions in the system is expanded in terms of simpler opera tors and both the coefficients in the expansion and relations independent of the coefficients are found. The method is applied to a system of Bosons at low temperatures in the approximation that the interaction is both tempera ture and density independent. Corrections to the pairing approximation are obtained due both to the inclusion of more terms in the Hamiltonian and the inclusion of collective excitations. It is shown that in the long wavelength limit these corrections can be included by renormalizing both the single particle and pairing energies. The renormalization can be carried out by adding a term to the single particle energy and an extra interaction to the pairing part of the Hamiltonian. This interaction is attractive over part of momentum space and obeys the criterion for a simple Bose condensation. It is shown that no single particle like zero momentum excitation exists. A collective excitation is con sidered for the zero momentum excitation and it is found v vi that its energy must be non-zero if it exists at all. The application to superfluid He11 is discussed.

Novel Outlook on the Eigenvalue Problem for the Orbital Angular Momentum Operator

G. S. Japaridze, Anzor Khelashvili, K. Sh. Turashvili

Based on the novel prescription for the power function, (x+iy)m, the new expression for Ψ(x,y|m), the eigenfunction of the operator of the third component of the angular momentum, M^z, is presented. These functions are normalizable, single valued and, distinct to the traditional presentation, (x+iy)m=ρmeimϕ, are invariant under the rotations at 2π for any, not necessarily integer, m—the eigenvalue of M^z. For any real m the functions Ψ(x,y|m) form an orthonormal set, therefore they may serve as a quantum mechanical eigenfunction of M^z. The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the angular momentum operator squared, M^2, derived for the two different prescriptions for the square root, (m2)1/2, (m2)1/2=|m| and (m2)1/2=±m, are reported. The normalizable eigenfunctions of M^2 are presented in terms of hypergeometric functions, admitting integer as well as non-integer eigenvalues. It is shown that the purely integer spectrum is not the most general solution but is just the artifact of a particular choice of the Legendre functions as the pair of linearly independent solutions of the eigenvalue problem for the M^2.
