Abstract

We establish a duality between the quantum wave vector spectrum and the eigenmodes of the classical Liouvillian dynamics for integrable billiards. Signatures of the classical eigenmodes appear as peaks in the correlation function of the quantum wave vector spectrum. A semiclassical derivation and numerical calculations are presented in support of the results. These classical eigenmodes can be observed in physical experiments through the autocorrelation of the transmission coefficient of waves in quantum billiards. Exact classical trace formulas of the resolvent are derived for the rectangle, equilateral triangle, and circle billiards. We also establish a correspondence between the classical periodic orbit length spectrum and the quantum spectrum for integrable polygonal billiards.

Quantum Spectra and Classical Orbits in Two-Dimensional Equilateral Triangular Billiards

We study the correspondence between quantum spectra and classical orbits in the equilateral triangular billiards. The eigenstates of such systems are not separable functions of two variables even though the problem is exactly solvable. We calculate the Fourier transform of a quantum spectral function and find that the positions of the peaks match well with the lengths of the classical orbits. This is another example showing that the quantum spectral function provides a bridge between quantum and classical mechanics.

Extracting trajectory equations of classical periodic orbits from the quantum eigenmodes in two-dimensional integrable billiards

Y. H. Hsieh, Y. T. Yu, P. H. Tuan +3 more

The trajectory equations for classical periodic orbits in the equilateral-triangular and circular billiards are systematically extracted from quantum stationary coherent states. The relationship between the phase factors of quantum stationary coherent states and the initial positions of classical periodic orbits is analytically derived. In addition, the stationary coherent states with noncoprime parametric numbers are shown to correspond to the multiple periodic orbits, which cannot be explicable in the one-particle picture. The stationary coherent states are further verified to be linked to the resonant modes that are generally observed in the experimental wave system excited by a localized and unidirectional source. The excellent agreement between the resonant modes and the stationary coherent states not only manifests the importance of classical features in experimental systems but also paves the way to manipulate the mesoscopic wave functions localized on the periodic orbits for applications.

Quantum Spectra and Classical Periodic Orbit in the Two-dimensional Quantum Billiard

Wang De-Hua

Using the periodic orbit theory, the quantum spectra in the two dimensional rectangular billiard are calculated and analyzed. The results show that each peak in the Fourier transformed spectrum of this system corresponds to the contribution of one classical periodic orbit;and with the increase of the length of the orbit, the number of the classical periodic orbit increases, and the peaks in the corresponding quantum spectra have also increased. This study suggests the good correspondence between the quantum spectra and the classical orbits in the rectangular billiards. Therefore, the correctness of the periodic orbit theory has been verified, which further deepen people's awareness of the relations between the classical and quantum mechanics.

Systematically Constructing Mesoscopic Quantum States Relevant to Periodic Orbits in Integrable Billiards from Directionally Resolved Level Distributions

Y. F. Chen, Songqing Lin, Ru-Wei Chang +2 more

Two-dimensional quantum billiards are one of the most important paradigms for exploring the connection between quantum and classical worlds. Researchers are mainly focused on nonintegrable and irregular shapes to understand the quantum characteristics of chaotic billiards. The emergence of the scarred modes relevant to unstable periodic orbits (POs) is one intriguing finding in nonintegrable quantum billiards. On the other hand, stable POs are abundant in integrable billiards. The quantum wavefunctions associated with stable POs have been shown to play a key role in ballistic transport. A variety of physical systems, such as microwave cavities, optical fibers, optical resonators, vibrating plates, acoustic waves, and liquid surface waves, are used to analogously simulate the wave properties of quantum billiards. This article gives a comprehensive review for the subtle connection between the quantum level clustering and the classical POs for three integrable billiards including square, equilateral triangle, and circular billiards.

Quantum spectra and classical periodic orbits in a rectangular billiard

Chuan‐Lu Yang

By using the representation of SU(2) coherent states,we construct the wave functions related to the classical periodic orbits in the 2D rectangular billiard. The relation between the classical periodic orbits and the quantum wave functions provide a more physical description of a phenomenon than the true eigenstates in mesoscopic systems.Furthermore,by using the periodic orbit theory,we calculate the Fourier transform ρ(L) of the quantum spectra of the two-dimensional rectangular billiard system. The resulting of the peaks in plots of |ρN(L)|2 versus L are compared to the lengths of the classical periodic orbits of the particle moving in the 2D rectangular cavity. The agreement of the peaks between |ρN(L)|2 and the length of the classical periodic orbit suggests the correspondence of quantum mechanics and classical mechanics.
