Abstract

We consider the instanton approach to the problem of chaos assisted tunneling in the context of existing analytical and numerical results obtained in this field. We provide the estimation for the range of validity of this method and briefly discuss possible applications of chaos assisted tunneling for quantum computations.

Simulation of chaos-assisted tunneling in a semiclassical regime on existing quantum computers

Alexei D. Chepelianskii, Dima L. Shepelyansky

We present a quantum algorithm that allows one to simulate chaos-assisted tunneling in deep semiclassical regime on existing quantum computers. This opens additional possibilities for investigation of macroscopic quantum tunneling and realization of semiclassical Schr\"odinger cat oscillations [E. Schr\"odinger, Naturwissenschaften 32, 807 (1935)]. Our numerical studies determine the decoherence rate induced by noisy gates for these oscillations and propose a suitable parameter regime for their experimental implementation.

On the Connection Between Chaos Assisted Tunneling and Coherent Destruction of Tunneling

Sumita Datta

The interplay between classical chaos and quantum tunneling is examined in driven nonlinear systems, with emphasis on how semi classical phase space structures influence purely quantum transport phenomena. We show that, in the presence of external driving and stochastic perturbations, tunneling rates acquire an activated form determined by effective classical barriers, providing a transparent link between chaotic dynamics and quantum tunneling. Within this framework, chaos assisted tunneling and coherent destruction of tunneling emerge as closely related manifestations of the same underlying phase space restructuring and interference effects induced by driving. The results offer a unified perspective on tunneling control in non integrable systems and remain relevant for modern studies of driven quantum dynamics and decoherence resistant transport.

Chaos-Assisted Dynamical Tunneling in Atom Optics

D. Steck, Mark G. Raizen

The study of quantum tunneling dates back to the early days of quantum mechanics, and has been a major topic of investigation in both theory and experiment. In recent years, there has been significant effort to understand tunneling phenomena for systems that exhibit chaos in their classical counterpart [13,15,18,29,42]. In particular, tunneling was predicted for mixed systems where chaotic and stable regions are intermingled [14]. The tunneling in this case is between two stable regions (referred to as nonlinear resonances, or islands of stability) in the classical phase space. The classical transport between these islands is forbidden by “dynamical barriers” in phase space. In contrast, quantum tunneling can couple the two islands so that a wave packet oscillates coherently between the two symmetry-related regions. This phenomenon is called dynamical tunneling because it occurs in phase space, without a fixed potential barrier. In the case of a mixed phase space, the presence of the chaotic region can enhance the rate of dynamical tunneling, a phenomenon known as chaos-assisted tunneling [53]. In this chapter, we review our experimental observation of chaosassisted tunneling with ultracold cesium atoms [48-51]. We first give a brief overview of some basic concepts and of earlier work in order to provide a context for our results.

Chaos-assisted tunneling with cold atoms

Amaury Mouchet, Christian Miniatura, Robin Kaiser +2 more

In the context of quantum chaos, both theory and numerical analysis predict large fluctuations of the tunneling transition probabilities when irregular dynamics is present at the classical level. Here we consider the nondissipative quantum evolution of cold atoms trapped in a time-dependent modulated periodic potential generated by two laser beams. We give some precise guidelines for the observation of chaos-assisted tunneling between invariant phase space structures paired by time-reversal symmetry.

Chaos-assisted tunneling

Steven Tomsovic, Denis Ullmo

We discuss and give evidence for the existence of a new mechanism for quantum dynamical tunneling. It may occur when a quantum system's underlying classical dynamics are far from integrability. In these circumstances, we show that the dominant tunneling contributions arise through chaos-assisted processes. This leads to behavior that is drastically different from that found in integrable and quasi-integrable systems. In particular, one can observe a marked crossing mechanism when a chaotic level passes nearby the tunneling ones, and the distributions of splitting (due to tunneling) can be modeled using properly designed ensembles of random matrices. Such tunneling should be amenable to experimental detection.
