Abstract

For a two-spin model which is (classically) integrable on a five-dimensional hypersurface in six-dimensional parameter space and for which level degeneracies occur exclusively (with one known exception) on four-dimensional manifolds embedded in the integrability hypersurface, we investigate the relations between symmetry, integrability, and the assignment of quantum numbers to eigenstates. We calculate quantum invariants in the form of expectation values for selected operators and monitor their dependence on the Hamiltonian parameters along loops within, without, and across the integrability hypersurface in parameter space. We find clear-cut signatures of integrability and nonintegrability in the observed traces of quantum invariants evaluated in finite-dimensional invariant Hilbert subspaces. The results support the notion that quantum integrability depends on the existence of action operators as constituent elements of the Hamiltonian.

Quantum integrability and nonintegrability of Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom

Vyacheslav V. Stepanov

The subject of the four manuscripts which make up this dissertation is the concept of integrability in quantum mechanical systems with two degrees of freedom, including the relation between quantum integrability and classical integrability in such systems. In the first manuscript, I consider a two-spin model both classically and quantum mechanically. In the six-dimensional parameter space of this model, classical integrability is satisfied on a five-dimensional hypersurface, and level crossings occur on four-dimensional manifolds that are completely embedded in the integrability hypersurface except for some lower-dimensional sub-manifolds. Under mild assumptions, the classical integrability condition can be reconstructed from a purely quantum mechanical study of level degeneracies in finite-dimensional invariant blocks of the Hamiltonian matrix. In the second manuscript, I analyze the functional dependence [special characters omitted] of the Hamiltonian operator on the action operators for an integrable quantum system, and I compare it with the corresponding functional relationship H (p1, q1; p2, q 2) = HC(J1, J2) in the classical limit of that system. It is demonstrated that the functional dependence is not the same quantum mechanically and (semi-)classically. The former is shown to converge toward the latter in some asymptotic regime associated with the classical limit, but the convergence may be non-uniform. This analysis is carried out for an integrable one- parameter two-spin model. Additional results presented for the (integrable) circular billiard model exhibit similar quantum corrections to the predictions of semiclassical quantization. In the third and the fourth manuscripts, I investigate the relations between symmetry, integrability, and the assignment of quantum numbers to eigenstates for two-spin and spin-boson models. I calculate quantum invariants in the form of expectation values for selected operators and monitor their dependence on the Hamiltonian parameters along loops within, without, and across the integrability region in parameter space. I find clear-cut signatures of integrability and nonintegrability in the observed traces of quantum invariants evaluated in invariant Hilbert subspaces. The results support the notion that quantum integrability depends on the existence of action operators as constituent elements of the Hamiltonian.

Quantum integrability and nonintegrability in the spin-boson model

Vyacheslav V. Stepanov, Gerhard H. Muller, Joachim Stolze

We study the spectral properties of a spin-boson Hamiltonian that depends on two continuous parameters 0 < or = Lambda < infinity (interaction strength) and 0 < or = alpha < or = pi/2 (integrability switch). In the classical limit, this system has two distinct integrable regimes, alpha=0 and alpha=pi/2 . For each integrable regime we can express the quantum Hamiltonian as a function of two action operators. Their eigenvalues (multiples of variant Planck's over 2pi ) are the natural quantum numbers for the complete level spectrum. This functional dependence cannot be extended into the nonintegrable regime (0<alpha<pi/2) . Here level crossings are prohibited and the level spectrum is naturally described by a single (energy sorting) quantum number. In consequence, the tracking of individual eigenstates along closed paths through both regimes leads to conflicting assignments of quantum numbers. This effect is a useful and reliable indicator of quantum chaos-a diagnostic tool that is independent of any level-statistical analysis.

Integrability and action operators in quantum Hamiltonian systems

Vyacheslav V. Stepanov, Gerhard H. Muller

For a (classically) integrable quantum-mechanical system with two degrees of freedom, the functional dependence H=HQ(J1,J2) of the Hamiltonian operator on the action operators is analyzed and compared with the corresponding functional relationship H(p1,q1;p2,q2)=HC(J1,J2) in the classical limit of that system. The former converges toward the latter in some asymptotic regime associated with the classical limit, but the convergence is, in general, nonuniform. The existence of the function H=HQ(J1,J2) in the integrable regime of a parametric quantum system explains empirical results for the dimensionality of manifolds in parameter space on which at least two levels are degenerate. The analysis is carried out for an integrable one-parameter two-spin model. Additional results presented for the (integrable) circular billiard model illuminate the same conclusions from a different angle.

Two-dimensional quantum spin Hamiltonians: Spectral properties

P. van Ede van der Pals, Pierre Gaspard

We report the comparative study of the energy-level properties of the Ising, the Heisenberg, and the dipolar quantum Hamiltonians of 1/2 spins on a two-dimensional (2D) square lattice. We evaluate the number of constants of motion by the dimension of the null space of the von Neumann operator. In this way, we show that the three Hamiltonians are ordered according to: Ising---Heisenberg---dipolar, with respect to their integrability properties. Extra dynamical symmetries persist beyond the geometric symmetries in the 2D Heisenberg Hamiltonian as evidenced by a Poisson statistics for the level spacings of the Hamiltonian desymmetrized by the geometric symmetries. On the other hand, the dipolar Hamiltonian has no extra symmetries beyond the geometric ones because the desymmetrized Hamiltonian shows Wigner spacing statistics characteristic of orthogonal ensembles of random matrices.

The origin of degeneracies and crossings in the 1d Hubbard model

Emil A. Yuzbashyan, B. L. Altshuler, B. Sriram Shastry

The paper is devoted to the connection between integrability of a finite quantum system and degeneracies of its energy levels. In particular, we analyse in detail the energy spectra of finite Hubbard chains. Heilmann and Lieb demonstrated that in these systems there are crossings of levels of the same parameter-independent symmetry. We show that this apparent violation of the Wigner–von Neumann noncrossing rule follows directly from the existence of nontrivial conservation laws and is a characteristic signature of quantum integrability. The energy spectra of Hubbard chains display many instances of permanent (at all values of the coupling) twofold degeneracies that cannot be explained by parameter-independent symmetries. We relate these degeneracies to the different transformation properties of the conserved currents under spatial reflections and the particle–hole transformation and estimate the fraction of doubly degenerate states. We also discuss multiply degenerate eigenstates of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. The wavefunctions of many of these states do not depend on the coupling, which suggests the existence of an additional parameter-independent symmetry.

Auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex model atqN 1 and a geometric interpretation of its symmetries

Christian Korff

The construction of auxiliary matrices for the six-vertex model at a root of unity is investigated from a quantum group theoretic point of view. Employing the concept of intertwiners associated with the quantum loop algebra U q ( 2 ) at q N = 1, a three-parameter family of auxiliary matrices is constructed. The elements of this family satisfy a functional relation with the transfer matrix allowing one to solve the eigenvalue problem of the model and to derive the Bethe ansatz equations. This functional relation is obtained from the decomposition of a tensor product of evaluation representations and involves auxiliary matrices with different parameters. Because of this dependence on additional parameters, the auxiliary matrices break in general the finite symmetries of the six-vertex model, such as spin-reversal or spin-conservation. More importantly, they also lift the extra degeneracies of the transfer matrix due to the loop symmetry present at rational coupling values. The extra parameters in the auxiliary matrices are shown to be directly related to the elements in the enlarged centre Z of the algebra U q ( 2 ) at q N = 1. This connection provides a geometric interpretation of the enhanced symmetry of the six-vertex model at rational coupling. The parameters labelling the auxiliary matrices can be interpreted as coordinates on a hypersurface Spec Z ⊂ ℂ 4 which remains invariant under the action of an infinite-dimensional group G of analytic transformations, called the quantum coadjoint action.
