Performance enhancement of a decoy-state quantum key distribution using a conditionally prepared down-conversion source in the Poisson distribution

Qin Wang, Anders Karlsson

We study the behavior of decoy-state quantum key distribution systems using a conditionally prepared down-conversion source, analyzing such a source running in a mode of operation with either a thermal photon number distribution or a Poisson photon number distribution. By comparing both modes of operations to the three-intensity proposal of Wang et al., to the one-intensity proposal of Adachi et al., and to the currently demonstrated faint-laser pulse system, we demonstrate that a down-conversion source in a Poissonian mode of operation can largely enhance the performance of decoy-state quantum key distribution systems. This makes the down-conversion-based decoy-state system an interesting alternative to current technological implementations based on faint-laser pulses.

Photon-number resolving and distribution verification using a multichannel superconducting nanowire single-photon detection system

Dengkuan Liu, Lixing You, Yuhao He +5 more

Photon-number-resolving (PNR) detection is a prerequisite for many important quantum optics applications. By using a four-channel superconducting nanowire single-photon detection system incorporating the photon multiport network technique, PNR detection of up to four photons was realized. The amplitude of the output pulse is proportional to the detected photon number. Using two channels of the system, the Poisson distribution of photon number in the faint pulsed laser was verified. The theoretical counts of the two-photon response were analyzed as a function of the mean photon number per pulse. The measurement results matched well with the theoretical calculations according to the Poisson distribution.

Characterization of mean photon number for key distribution system using faint laser

Salim Ali Al-Kathiri, Wajdi Fawzi Mohammed Al-Khateeb, Mohd Hafizulfika +2 more

Key distribution system using faint laser is very likely to become the first application exploiting the particular properties of single quanta called photons. In experimental key distribution system, it is highly demanded to use single-photon source for secure key distribution. Since there is not yet a laser source capable of producing such faint state, most experiments uses low coherent pulse laser, which is attenuated to produce a mean photon number mu. In this paper, we present an experimental setup to determine the mean photon number using a 300-ps low coherent pulse laser at 1550 nm for a practical crypto system. We will also present the effect of trigger frequency, detection efficiency and dark counts on average photon counts.
