Abstract

By expressing the Holstein-Primakoff transformation in a symmetric form a modified spin-polaron technique utilized on triangular-lattice antiferromagnet is developed. With the technique, we have treated an extended t-J model, calculated the quasiparticle dispersion, and we also compared the the dispersion with that obtained by other method.

Lattice and spin polarons in two dimensions

Yang Zhao, G. H. Chen, Yu Li

A variational approach is employed to compute the wave function of a single polaron for a two-dimensional Holstein Hamiltonian with arbitrary forms of linear particle–boson interactions and boson dispersion relations. The Toyozawa ansatz is utilized, and generalizations to multiple polarons are outlined. Applications are made to model superradiance in pseudoisocyanine bromide J-aggregates, and to calculate quasiparticle dispersion of an itinerant hole in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet.

Application of the Functional Schrödinger Picture Theory to the Holstein-Primakoff Boson Theory for Antiferromagnetic Spin Polarons in Two-Dimensional Systems of Strongly Correlated Electrons

Kwangyl Park, Sul-Ah Ahn, Sung‐Ho Suck Salk

Applying the functional Schrodinger picture to the Holstein-Primakoff boson theory, we obtain a dispersion energy relation for an antiferromagnetic spin polaron or magnon in two-dimensional systems of strongly correlated electrons. We show that our magnon ground-state wave function is equivalent to that of a retraceable path approximation by Reiter in the long-wavelength limit. Further, we demonstrate that the derived dispersion relation of a quasiparticle leads to the self-consistent Born approximation of the Green's function approach only in the large Heisenberg coupling J limit, showing that this new approach is general enough to contain more physical information than the Green's function approach in dealing with the antiferroinagnetic spin polaron of interest.

Spin polarons in triangular antiferromagnets

Matthias Vojta C

The motion of a single hole in a two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet is investigated using the $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model. The one-hole states are described by strings of spin deviations around the hole. Using projection technique the one-hole spectral function is calculated. For large $J/t$ we find low-lying quasiparticlelike bands which are well separated from an incoherent background by a gap of order J. However, for small $J/t$ this gap vanishes and the spectrum becomes broad over an energy range of several t. The results are compared with self-consistent Born approximation calculations and numerical data.

Lattice polaron formation: Effects of nonscreened electron-phonon interaction

Holger Fehske, Jan Loos, Gerhard Wellein

We explore the quasiparticle properties of lattice polarons on the basis of a quite general electron-phonon Hamiltonian with a long-range displacement-type interaction. To treat the dynamical quantum phonons without significant loss of accuracy we adapt an exact Lanczos diagonalization method and compute various static and dynamical quantities, such as the electron-lattice correlation function, the polaron band dispersion, the effective polaron mass, the kinetic energy, the single-particle spectral function, and the optical conductivity, on finite one-dimensional lattices for a wide range of model parameters. We compare the results with those obtained for the standard Holstein model with short-range electron-phonon interaction only.

Magnetic and lattice polaron in the Holstein t−J model

E. Cappelluti, Sergio Ciuchi

We investigate the interplay between the formation of a lattice and magnetic polaron in the case of a single hole in the antiferromagnetic background. We present an exact analytical solution of the Holstein $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model in infinite dimensions. The ground-state energy, electron-lattice correlation function, spin bag dimension as well as spectral properties are calculated. The magnetic and hole-lattice correlations sustain each other, i.e., the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations favors the formation of the lattice polaron at lower values of the electron-phonon coupling while the polaronic effect contributes to reduce the number of spin defects in the antiferromagnetic background. The crossover towards a spin-lattice small polaron region of the phase diagram becomes a discontinuous transition in the adiabatic limit.

Variational approach for the Holstein molecular-crystal model

V. Cataudella, G. De Filippis, Giuseppe Iadonisi

A variational technique is developed to investigate the polaronic features of the Holstein molecular-crystal model. It is based on a linear superposition of Bloch states that describe large and small polaron wave functions. It is shown that this method provides a very good description of the regime characterized by intermediate values of the electron-phonon coupling constant (the so-called intermediate polaron) for any value of the adiabatic parameter ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{0}/t.$ The polaron ground state energy in one and two dimensions is calculated and successfully compared with the best estimates available providing a clear physical interpretation of the intermediate polaron. The band structure, the spectral weight of the ground state and the lattice displacement associated to the polaron are also calculated and discussed. The method has the advantage of requiring very little computational effort.
