Searching for new conditions for fermion N-representability

Abstract

New elements of the dual cone of the set of fermion N-representable 2-density operators are proposed. So far, the explicit form of the corresponding necessary conditions for N-representability is obtained for N=3. In this case the new condition is stronger than the known B- and C-conditions for 3-representability. The results provide evidence that in the spectral decomposition of the N-representable 2-density operator there exists an intrinsic relation between the eigenvalue and the corresponding eigenfunction. keywords: fermion N-representability problem, conditions for N-representability

Structure of Fermionic Density Matrices: Complete N -Representability Conditions

David A. Mazziotti

We present a constructive solution to the N-representability problem: a full characterization of the conditions for constraining the two-electron reduced density matrix to represent an N-electron density matrix. Previously known conditions, while rigorous, were incomplete. Here, we derive a hierarchy of constraints built upon (i) the bipolar theorem and (ii) tensor decompositions of model Hamiltonians. Existing conditions D, Q, G, T1, and T2, known classical conditions, and new conditions appear naturally. Subsets of the conditions are amenable to polynomial-time computations of strongly correlated systems.

Some properties of reduced density operators

R. L. Hudson

Some questions concerning reduced density operators are reviewed. A new proof of the condition for Fermionic N-representability of one-particle density operators is given which is based on the functional analytic method of the dual cone. The application of a quantum analog of de Finetti's theorem to the interpretation of quantum theory is described. ©1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 74: 595–599, 1999

N‐Representability conditions generated by a one‐particle grassmann factor of an antisymmetric function

Hubert Grudziński

Abstract N‐representability conditions for a two‐particle density operator implied by positive‐semidefiniteness of the projection operator PN+1(ϕ1 Λ ΨN) are derived and discussed. The operator PN+1(ϕ1 Λ ΨN) projects onto an (N + 1)‐particle antisymmetric function ϕ1 Λ ΨN, the Grassmann product of a one‐particle factor ϕ1 and an N‐particle factor ΨN. The polar subcone 𝒫2N(g, q) to the set of N‐representable two‐particle density operators 𝒫2N which corresponds to these conditions is found. It is shown that its extreme rays belong to two orbits for the action of the unitary group of transformations in one‐particle Hilbert space. The facial structure of the convex set 𝒫2N exposed by elements of 𝒫2N(g, q) is analyzed. An example of the operator that changes the structure of its bottom eigenspace when the number of fermions N surpasses a certain value is noted. A new approach to the diagonal conditions for N‐representability is found. It consists of the decomposition of the N‐particle antisymmetric identity operator onto the mutually orthogonal projection operators.

Fermion N -representability for prescribed density and paramagnetic current density

Erik I. Tellgren, Simen Kvaal, Trygve Ulf Helgaker

The $N$-representability problem is the problem of determining whether there exists $N$-particle states with some prescribed property. Here we report an affirmative solution to the fermion $N$-representability problem when both the density and the paramagnetic current density are prescribed. This problem arises in current-density functional theory and is a generalization of the well-studied corresponding problem (only the density prescribed) in density functional theory. Given any density and paramagnetic current density satisfying a minimal regularity condition (essentially that a von Weiz\"acker--like canonical kinetic energy density is locally integrable), we prove that there exists a corresponding $N$-particle state. We prove this by constructing an explicit one-particle reduced density matrix in the form of a position-space kernel, i.e., a function of two continuous-position variables. In order to make minimal assumptions, we also address mathematical subtleties regarding the diagonal of, and how to rigorously extract paramagnetic current densities from, one-particle reduced density matrices in kernel form.

N -Representability Problem for Fermion Density Matrices. II. The First-Order Density Matrix with N Even

Darwin W. Smith

For a quantum-mechanical system of $N$ identical fermions, the $N$-representability problem is the problem of recognizing whether, for a given pth-order reduced density matrix ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{(p)}(12\ensuremath{\cdots}p|{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\cdots}{p}^{\ensuremath{'}})$, there exists an antisymmetric $N$-particle wave function $\ensuremath{\Psi}(12\ensuremath{\cdots}N)$ such that ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}^{(p)}(12\ensuremath{\cdots}p|{1}^{\ensuremath{'}}{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\cdots}{p}^{\ensuremath{'}})=({N}{p})\ensuremath{\int}\ensuremath{\Psi}(12\ensuremath{\cdots}N)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\ensuremath{\Psi}}^{*}({1}^{\ensuremath{'}}{2}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\cdots}{p}^{\ensuremath{'}},p+1\ensuremath{\cdots}N){d}_{{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{p+1}}\ensuremath{\cdots}{d}_{{\ensuremath{\tau}}_{N}}$. It is shown that if the Hamiltonian of a system is time-reversal invariant, and the number of particles, $N$, is even, the necessary and sufficient condition that an approximate first-order density matrix corresponding to a nondegenerate energy eigenstate be $N$-representable is that its natural spin-orbital occupation numbers be equal in pairs.
