Asymptotic Spectral Measures: Between Quantum Theory and E-theory

Abstract

We review the relationship between positive operator-valued measures (POVMs) in quantum measurement theory and asymptotic morphisms in the C*-algebra E-theory of Connes and Higson. The theory of asymptotic spectral measures, as introduced by Martinez and Trout (CMP 226), is integrally related to positive asymptotic morphisms on locally compact spaces via an asymptotic Riesz Representation Theorem. Examples and applications to quantum physics, including quantum noise models, semiclassical limits, pure spin one-half systems and quantum information processing will also be discussed.

. We study the relationship between POV-measures in quantum theory and asymptotic morphisms in the operator algebra E-theory of Connes-Higson. This is done by introducing the theory of "asymptotic" PV-measures and their integral correspondence with positive asymptotic morphisms on locally compact spaces. Examples and applications involving various aspects of quantum physics, including quantum noise models, semiclassical limits, strong deformation quantizations, and pure half-spin particles, are also discussed. 1.

Categorical characterizations of operator-valued measures

Frank Roumen

The most general type of measurement in quantum physics is modeled by a positive operator-valued measure (POVM). Mathematically, a POVM is a generalization of a measure, whose values are not real numbers, but positive operators on a Hilbert space. POVMs can equivalently be viewed as maps between effect algebras or as maps between algebras for the Giry monad. We will show that this equivalence is an instance of a duality between two categories. In the special case of continuous POVMs, we obtain two equivalent representations in terms of morphisms between von Neumann algebras.

Classical and nonclassical randomness in quantum measurements

Douglas Farenick, Sarah Plosker, Jerrod Smith

The space POVM H(X) of positive operator-valued probability measures on the Borel sets of a compact (or even locally compact) Hausdorff space X with values in B(H), the algebra of linear operators acting on a d-dimensional Hilbert space H, is studied from the perspectives of classical and nonclassical convexity through a transform Γ that associates any positive operator-valued measure ν with a certain completely positive linear map Γ(ν) of the homogeneous C*-algebra C(X)⊗B(H) into B(H). This association is achieved by using an operator-valued integral in which nonclassical random variables (that is, operator-valued functions) are integrated with respect to positive operator-valued measures and which has the feature that the integral of a random quantum effect is itself a quantum effect. A left inverse Ω for Γ yields an integral representation, along the lines of the classical Riesz representation theorem for linear functionals on C(X), of certain (but not all) unital completely positive linear maps φ:C(X)⊗B(H)→B(H). The extremal and C*-extremal points of POVM H(X) are determined.

Quantum measurement and the measurement problem: Mathematical structures, generalized measurements, and applications in quantum information

Sachin .

We present a comprehensive technical review of quantum measurement theory, emphasizing the mathematical structures underlying the measurement problem and their role in modern quantum information science. Beginning with spectral theory and the Born rule, we develop the theory of positive operator-valued measures (POVMs), Kraus operators, and completely positive channels as essential generalizations of projective measurements. We discuss how decoherence theory addresses the preferred-basis and interference problems while leaving the outcome problem formally unresolved, motivating interpretational responses ranging from collapse models to many-worlds scenarios. Throughout, we emphasize the applicability of POVM theory to quantum state discrimination, quantum cryptography, and quantum error correction. The review prioritizes physical motivation and mathematical hints over detailed proofs, suitable for researchers transitioning into quantum foundations or quantum information theory.

A pozitív operátor értékű mértékek matematikai struktúrája és alkalmazásai

Roberto Beneduci

The present dissertation focuses on the analysis of the mathematical structure of the Positive Operator Valued Measures (POVM) and their relevance to quantum mechanics. In particular we analyze: 1. The relationships between POVMs and PVMs (Projection Valued Measures) and prove that each commutative POVM F is the smearing (realized by a Feller Markov Kernel) of a spectral measure. That suggests an interpretation of commutative POVMs as the randomization of real PVMs. Moreover, we characterize the POVMs whose smearing can be realized by strong Feller Markov kernels. 2. The relationships between the characterization of commutative POVMs in item 1) and Naimark's dilation theorem. We prove that the self-adjoint operator A corresponding to the spectral measure E, of which F is the smearing, is the projection of a Naimark operator. 3. Analysis of the informational content of a POVM. We introduce an equivalence relation on the set of observables which we compare with other well known equivalence relations and prove that it is the only one for which E is always equivalent to F. 4. The uniform continuity of a POVM and its relevance to the problem of localization. We take into consideration a non-commutative POVM defined on a locally compact second countable Haussdorf topological space and give necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be uniformly continuous. Moreover, we show the relevance of this result to relativistic quantum mechanics.

Positive operator valued measure in quantum information processing

Howard E. Brandt

The positive operator valued measure (POVM), also known as the probability operator valued measure, is useful in quantum information processing. The POVM consists of a set of non-negative quantum-mechanical Hermitian operators that add up to the identity. The probability that a quantum system is in a particular state is given by the expectation value of the POVM operator corresponding to that state. Following a brief review of the mathematics and history of POVMs in quantum theory, and an expository discussion of the quantum mechanics of photonic qubits, a particular implementation of a POVM for use in the measurement of photonic qubits is reviewed.
