Abstract

The pseudo-perturbative shifted-ℓ expansion technique (PSLET) is shown to be applicable in the non-Hermitian 𝒫𝒯-symmetric context. The construction of bound states for several 𝒫𝒯-symmetric potentials is presented, with special attention paid to V ( r ) = i r 3 − α√i r oscillators.

Script PScript T-symmetric regularizations in supersymmetric quantum mechanics

Miloslav Znojil

Within supersymmetric quantum mechanics the necessary regularization of the poles of the superpotentials on the real line of coordinates x may be most easily mediated by a small constant shift of this axis into the complex plane. Detailed attention is paid here to the resulting recipe which works, in effect, with non-Hermitian (a.k.a. -symmetric or pseudo-Hermitian) Hamiltonians. Besides an exhaustive discussion of the role of the complex spike in harmonic oscillator, we mention also some applications concerning the regularized versions of the Smorodinsky–Winternitz and Calogero models and of the relativistic Klein–Gordon equation.

Fundamental Properties of Eigenstate Wave Functions of PT-Symmetric Anharmonic Oscillators

Jack H. Noble, Ulrich D. Jentschura

The PT-symmetric cubic oscillator with Hamiltonian H_3 = - (1/2) d_x^2 + (1/2) x^2 + i G x^3 is a paradigmatic example of a pseudo-Hermitian, or PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with a purely real spectrum when endowed with L^2(R) boundary conditions. Eigenfunctions of the stationary Schr\{o}dinger equation H_3 psi_n(x) = E_n psi_n(x) are manifestly complex, while the energy eigenvalues E_n are real and positive. Although H_3 does not commute with the parity operator, we find that for a natural choice of the global complex phase of the eigenstate wave function, the real and imaginary parts of the eigenfunctions [i.e., Re psi_n(x) and Im psi_n(x)] are eigenstates of parity. Both the real and imaginary parts of the eigenfunctions are found to have an infinite number of zeros, even for the ground state and even for infinitesimal G, but the real and imaginary parts of psi_n(x) never vanish simultaneously when G>0. Furthermore, we find that the eigenfunctions are concentrated in an allowed region where the energy E_n is larger than the complex modulus of the complex potential. PT-symmetric Hamiltonians constitute natural generalizations of Hermitian Hamiltonians as time-evolution operators. Our results suggest that PT-symmetric (pseudo-Hermitian) time evolution can naturally be interpreted as time evolution in a situation where manifestly complex gain and loss terms mutually compensate and lead to the real energy eigenvalues.

Imaginary cubic oscillator and its square-well approximations in x- and p-representation

Miloslav Znojil

Schroedinger equation with imaginary PT-symmetric potential $V^{}(x) = i\,x^3$ is studied using the numerical discretization methods in both the coordinate and momentum representations. In the former case our results confirm that the model generates an infinite number of bound states with real energies. In the latter case the differential equation is of the third order and a square-well, solvable approximation of kinetic energy is recommended and discussed. One finds that in the strong-coupling limit, the exact PT-symmetric solutions converge to their Hermitian predecessors.

Application of pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics to a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with a continuum of scattering states

Alí Mostafazadeh

We extend the application of the techniques developed within the framework of the pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics to study a unitary quantum system described by an imaginary PT-symmetric potential v(x) having a continuous real spectrum. For this potential that has recently been used, in the context of optical potentials, for modeling the propagation of electromagnetic waves traveling in a waveguide half and half filled with gain and absorbing media, we give a perturbative construction of the physical Hilbert space, observables, localized states, and the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian. Ignoring terms of order three or higher in the non-Hermiticity parameter ζ, we show that the equivalent Hermitian Hamiltonian has the form p2∕2m+(ζ2∕2)∑n=0∞{αn(x),p2n} with αn(x) vanishing outside an interval that is three times larger than the support of v(x), i.e., in 2∕3 of the physical interaction region the potential v(x) vanishes identically. We provide a physical interpretation for this unusual behavior and comment on the classical limit of the system.

Pseudo-Hermitian versus Hermitian position-dependent-mass Hamiltonians in a perturbative framework

Bijan Kumar Bagchi, C. Quesne, Rajkumar Roychoudhury

We formulate a systematic algorithm for constructing a whole class of Hermitian position-dependent-mass Hamiltonians which, to lowest order of perturbation theory, allow a description in terms of -symmetric Hamiltonians. The method is applied to the Hermitian analogue of the -symmetric cubic anharmonic oscillator. A new example is provided by a Hamiltonian (approximately) equivalent to a -symmetric extension of the one-parameter trigonometric Pöschl–Teller potential.
