Some properties for the low-lying spectrum of the ferromagnetic, quantum XXZ spin system

Abstract

In this thesis we present three results about the ferromagnetic quantum XXZ model: 1) Existence of a spectral gap above all infinite-volume ground states in one dimension for any choice of spin S>1/2 (for S=1/2 this was already known); 2) Characterization of one-dimensional "droplet" states as ground states of the spin-1/2 model with up spin boundary fields; 3) An upper bound for the spectral gap above the spin-1/2 interface ground states in dimension two and higher. The upper bound vanishes as 1/R^2, where R is the linear size of the system. This thesis contains research performed in collboration with other authors: O. Bolina, P. Contucci, T. Koma, B. Nachtergaele.

The spectral gap for the ferromagnetic spin-J XXZ chain

Tohru Koma, Bruno Nachtergaele, Shannon L. Starr

We investigate the spectrum above the kink ground states of the spin J ferromagnetic XXZ chain with Ising anisotropy A. Our main theorem is that there is a non-vanishing gap above all ground states of this model for all values of J. Using a variety of methods, we obtain additional information about the magnitude of this gap, about its behavior for large A, about its overall behavior as a function of A and its dependence on the ground state, about the scaling of the gap and the structure of the low-lying spectrum for large J, and about the existence of isolated eigenvalues in the excitation spectrum.

Droplet States in the XXZ Heisenberg Chain

Bruno Nachtergaele, Shannon L. Starr

Abstract: We consider the ground states of the ferromagnetic XXZ chain with spin up boundary conditions in sectors with a fixed number of down spins. This forces the existence of a droplet of down spins in the system. We find the exact energy and the states that describe these droplets in the limit of an infinite number of down spins. We also prove that the droplet states, which were known to be separated by an energy gap from the ground state, are also separated by an energy gap from the remainder of the spectrum, i.e., they form an isolated band. We also prove the analogous results for finite chains with periodic boundary conditions and for the infinite chain.

Interfaces and droplets in quantum lattice models

Bruno Nachtergaele

This paper is a short review of recent results on interface states in the Falicov-Kimball model and the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model. More specifically, we discuss the following topics: 1) The existence of interfaces in quantum lattice models that can be considered as perturbations of classical models. 2) The rigidity of the 111 interface in the three-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model at sufficiently low temperatures. 3) The low-lying excitations and the scaling of the gap in the 111 interface ground state in the ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model in three dimensions. 4) The existence of droplet states in the XXZ chain and their properties.

Low Temperature Results for the Heisenberg XXZ and XY Models

Joshua L Abbott

This thesis contains two results for the low temperature behavior of quantum spin systems. First, we present a lower bound for the spin-1 XXZ chain in finite volumes in terms of the gap of the two-site Hamiltonian. The estimate is derived by a method developed by Nachtergaele in (cond-mat/9410110) called the Martingale Method. Our bound relies on an assumption which we have, as yet, been unable to verify analytically in all cases. We present numerical evidence that strongly indicates our assumption is valid. The second result is a proof that the spin-1/2, d-dimensional XY model in the presence of an external magnetic field does not undergo a phase transition at low temperature, provided that the strength of the field is great enough. Using a contour expansion inspired by Kennedy, we show that the weights of contours satisfy a condition of Kotecky and Preiss which allows us to express the free energy of the system as a cluster expansion. As part of the setup we give a simple proof that the all-spin-up state is the unique ground state when the external magnetic field has strength at least 2d.

The Infinite XXZ Quantum Spin Chain Revisited: Structure of Low Lying Spectral Bands and Gaps

Christoph Fischbacher, Günter Stolz

We study the structure of the spectrum of the infinite XXZ quantum spin chain, an anisotropic version of the Heisenberg model. The XXZ chain Hamiltonian preserves the number of down spins (or particle number), allowing to represent it as a direct sum of N-particle interacting discrete Schrödinger-type operators restricted to the fermionic subspace. In the Ising phase of the model we use this representation to give a detailed determination of the band and gap structure of the spectrum at low energy. In particular, we show that at sufficiently strong anisotropy the so-called droplet bands are separated from higher spectral bands uniformly in the particle number. Our presentation of all necessary background is self-contained and can serve as an introduction to the mathematical theory of the Heisenberg and XXZ quantum spin chains.
