We introduce new entanglement measures on the set of density operators on tensor product Hilbert spaces. These measures are based on the greatest cross norm on the tensor product of the sets of trace class operators on Hilbert space. We show that they satisfy the basic requirements on entanglement measures discussed in the literature, including convexity, invariance under local unitary operations and nonincrease under local quantum operations and classical communication.

Abstract We introduce new entanglement measures on the set of density operators on tensor product Hilbert spaces. These measures are based on the greatest cross norm on the tensor product of the sets of trace class operators on Hilbert space. We show that they satisfy all the basic requirements on entanglement measures discussed in the literature, including convexity, invariance under local unitary operations and non-increase under local quantum operations and classical communication. In the second part of this paper we discuss the uniqueness theorem for entanglement measures. We obtain a mathematically simple characterization of all functionals coinciding with the von Neumann reduced entropy on pure states based on the Khinchin-Faddeev axiomatization of Shannon entropy and give a physical interpretation of the axioms in terms of entanglement. We also discuss the uniqueness theorem in the operational approach and argue that the standard argument in favor of the uniqueness theorem for entanglement measures is not fully conclusive and that further axioms have to be added to the list of postulates. 1
A density operator (state) on a tensor product H ⊗ K of Hilbert spaces is separable if it is in the convex closure of the subset of all tensor product states. Non-separable states are called entangled. These concepts are of great importance in quantum information theory, but they have been studied in depth only in the finite-dimensional context [1]. In this note we give a general integral representation for separable states and provide the first example of separable states that are not countably decomposable. We also prove a structure theorem for quantum communication channels that are entanglement-breaking, generalizing the finite-dimensional result of [2]. In the finite-dimensional case such channels can be characterized as having a Stinespring–Kraus representation (3) with operators Vj of rank 1. The above example implies the existence of infinite-dimensional entanglement-breaking channels having no such representation. In what follows, H, K ,... are separable Hilbert spaces, T(H) is the Banach space of trace-class operators and S(H) is the convex subset of all density operators on H. For brevity we shall also call them states, having in mind that a density operator ρ uniquely determines a normal state on the algebra B(H) of all bounded operators on H. Equipped with the trace-norm topology, S(H) is a complete separable metric space. If π is a Borel probability measure on S(H), then the Bochner integral
Entanglement in C∗-algebras: tensor products of state spaces
We analyze the Namioka-Phelps minimal and maximal tensor products of compact convex sets which arise as the state spaces of unital C∗-algebras. Relatedly, we study entanglement in (infinite dimensional) C∗-algebras. While the minimal Namioka-Phelps tensor product of the state spaces of two C∗-algebras is the well-known set of separable (= un-entangled) states on the (minimal) tensor product of the C∗-algebras, we also describe the more elusive maximal Namioka-Phelps tensor product of state spaces of C∗-algebras. We show that the minimal and maximal tensor products of state spaces of C∗-algebras agree precisely when one of the two C∗-algebras is commutative, which confirms Barker's conjecture in the case where the compact convex sets are state paces of C∗-algebras.
Further, the Namioka-Phelps tensor product of the trace simplexes of two or more unital C∗-algebras is shown to be the trace simplex of the (minimal or maximal) tensor product of the C∗-algebras. This enables a systematic way of determining the trace simplex of a tensor product of C∗-algebras.
We introduce a class of states of a composite quantum system, the so-called cross states, that turn out to play a major role in the theory of entanglement for a genuinely infinite-dimensional bipartite system. In the case where at least one of the Hilbert spaces of the bipartition is finite-dimensional, all states are cross states, whereas, in the genuinely infinite-dimensional setting where the dimension of both Hilbert spaces is not finite, the cross states form a trace-norm dense, convex, proper subset of the set of all states. In the latter case, the cross states can be regarded as those physical states that possess a finite amount of entanglement; accordingly, all separable states are of this kind. We prove that, for any Hilbert space dimension, the separable states can be characterized as those cross states that minimize a suitable norm, i.e., the projective norm associated with the projective tensor product of two trace classes; all other cross states are density operators belonging to the projective tensor product space. This is a generalization of the classical cross norm criterion of separability. Finally, we define an extended real-valued entanglement function and study its main properties. Coherently with the interpretation of cross states as finitely entangled states, this function is finite, and coincides with the projective norm, precisely on the cross states of the system.
Let ${H}^{[N]}{=H}^{[{d}_{1}]}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\cdots}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{H}^{[{d}_{n}]}$ be a tensor product of Hilbert spaces and let ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0}$ be the closest separable state in the Hilbert-Schmidt norm to an entangled state ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}.$ Let ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{0}$ denote the closest separable state to ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ along the line segment from I/N to ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ where I is the identity matrix. Following A. O. Pittenger and M. H. Rubin [Linear Algebr. Appl. 346, 75 (2002)] a witness W0 detecting the entanglement of ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ can be constructed in terms of I, ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0},$ and ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{0}.$ If representations of ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0}$ and ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{0}$ as convex combinations of separable projections are known, then the entanglement of ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ can be detected by local measurements. G\"uhne et al. [Phys. Rev. A 66, 062305 (2002)] obtain the minimum number of measurement settings required for a class of two-qubit states. We use our geometric approach to generalize their result to the corresponding two-qudit case when d is prime and obtain the minimum number of measurement settings. In those particular bipartite cases, ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0}={\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{0}.$ We illustrate our general approach with a two-parameter family of three-qubit bound entangled states for which ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{0}\ensuremath{\ne}{\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\tau}}}_{0}$ and we show that our approach works for n qubits. We elaborated earlier [A. O. Pittenger, Linear Algebr. App. 359, 235 (2003)] on the role of a ``far face'' of the separable states relative to a bound entangled state ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ constructed from an orthogonal unextendible product base. In this paper the geometric approach leads to an entanglement witness expressible in terms of a constant times I and a separable density ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}$ on the far face from ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}.$ Up to a normalization this coincides with the witness obtained by G\"uhne et al. for the particular example analyzed there.
In the framework of quantum mechanics over a quadratic extension of the ultrametric field of p-adic numbers, we introduce a notion of tensor product of p-adic Hilbert spaces. To this end, following a standard approach, we first consider the algebraic tensor product of p-adic Hilbert spaces. We next define a suitable norm on this linear space. It turns out that, in the p-adic framework, this norm is the analogue of the projective norm associated with the tensor product of real or complex normed spaces. Eventually, by metrically completing the resulting p-adic normed space, and equipping it with a suitable inner product, we obtain the tensor product of p-adic Hilbert spaces. That this is indeed the correct p-adic counterpart of the tensor product of complex Hilbert spaces is also certified by establishing a natural isomorphism between this p-adic Hilbert space and the corresponding Hilbert–Schmidt class. Since the notion of subspace of a p-adic Hilbert space is highly nontrivial, we finally study the tensor product of subspaces, stressing both the analogies and the significant differences with respect to the standard complex case. These findings should provide us with the mathematical foundations necessary to explore quantum entanglement in the p-adic setting, with potential applications in the emerging field of p-adic quantum information theory.
