Abstract

We suggest a closed form expression for the path integral of quantum transition amplitudes. We introduce a quantum action with parameters different from the classical action. We present numerical results for the harmonic oscillator with weak perturbation, the quartic potential, and the double well potential. The quantum action is relevant for quantum chaos and quantum instantons.

We suggest a closed form expression for the path integral of quantum transition amplitudes to construct a quantum action. Based on this we propose rigorous definitions of both, quantum instantons and quantum chaos. As an example we compute the quantum instanton of the double well potential.

A Method to Evaluate Quantum Path Integrals

Babak Vakili

As an alternative formulation of quantum mechanics, path integral is based on the notion of transition amplitude which gives the wave function of a quantum system at a time t f by acting on the wave function at an earlier time ti.We show that for a general quadratic form for the Lagrangian of the system, transition amplitude has the form f (t f -ti)e i h S class., where S class. is the classical action. We then present an algebraic method to evaluate the function f (t f -ti) without refereing to the path integral calculations. We examine the presented method to the cases of free particle and harmonic oscillator and obtain their propagators.

Path integrals and quantum mechanics

In this thesis we are investigating a different formalism of non-relativistic quantum mechanics called the path integral formalism. It is a generalization of the classical least action principle. The introduction to this subject begins with the construction of the path integral in terms of the idea of probability amplitudes whose absolute square gives the probability of finding a system in a particular state. Then we show that if the Lagrangian is a quadratic form one needs only to calculate the classical action besides from a time-dependent normalization constant to find the explicit expression of the path integral. We look in to the subject of two kinds of slit-experiments: The square slit, the single-and the double-Gaussian slit. Also, the propagator for constrained paths is calculated and applied to the Aharonov-Bohm effect, which shows that the vector potential defined in classical electrodynamics have a physical meaning in quantum mechanics. It is also shown that the path integral formulation is equivalent to the Schrödinger description of quantum mechanics, by deriving the Schrödinger equation from the path integral.Further applications of the path integral are discussed.

Nonlinear dynamics in quantum physics- the study of quantum chaos

Caron, L. A., H. Kröger, X.Q. Luo +2 more

We use the quantum action to study the dynamics of quantum system at finite temperature. We construct the quantum action non-perturbatively and find temperature dependent action parameters. Here we apply the quantum action to study quantum chaos. We present a numerical study of a classically chaotic 2-D Hamiltonian system - harmonic oscillators with anharmonic coupling. We compare Poincaré sections for the quantum action at finite temperature with those of classical action.
