Virial Coefficients of Non-Abelian Anyons

Abstract

We study a system of non-Abelian anyons in the lowest Landau level of a strong magnetic field. Using diagrammatic techniques, we prove that the virial coefficients do not depend on the statistics parameter. This is true for all representations of all non-Abelian groups for the statistics of the particles and relies solely on the fact that the effective statistical interaction is a traceless operator.

Statistical interparticle potential of an ideal gas of non-Abelian anyons

Francesco Mancarella, Andrea Trombettoni, Giuseppe Mussardo

We determine and study the statistical interparticle potential of an ideal system of non-Abelian Chern-Simons (NACS) particles, comparing our results with the corresponding results of an ideal gas of Abelian anyons. In the Abelian case, the statistical potential depends on the statistical parameter and it has a "quasi-bosonic" behaviour for statistical parameter in the range (0,1/2) (non-monotonic with a minimum) and a "quasi-fermionic" behaviour for statistical parameter in the range (1/2,1) (monotonically decreasing without a minimum). In the non-Abelian case the behavior of the statistical potential depends on the Chern- Simons coupling and the isospin quantum number: as a function of these two parameters, a phase diagram with quasi-bosonic, quasi-fermionic and bosonic-like regions is obtained and investigated. Finally, using the obtained expression for the statistical potential, we compute the second virial coefficient of the NACS gas, which correctly reproduces the results available in literature.

Kohn-Sham density functional theory of Abelian anyons

Yayun Hu, Ganpathy N. Murthy, Sumathi Rao +1 more

We develop a density functional treatment of noninteracting Abelian anyons, which is capable, in principle, of dealing with a system of a large number of anyons in an external potential. Comparison with exact results for a few particles shows that the model captures the behavior qualitatively and semiquantitatively, especially in the vicinity of the fermionic statistics. We then study anyons with statistics parameter $1+1/n$, which are thought to condense into a superconducting state. An indication of the superconducting behavior is the mean-field result that, for uniform density systems, the ground-state energy increases under the application of an external magnetic field independent of its direction. Our density functional theory based analysis does not find that to be the case for finite systems of anyons, which can accommodate a weak external magnetic field through density transfer between the bulk and the boundary rather than through transitions across effective Landau levels, but the ``Meissner repulsion'' of the external magnetic field is recovered in the thermodynamic limit as the effect of the boundary becomes negligible. We also consider the quantum Hall effect of anyons, and show that its topological properties, such as the charge and statistics of the excitations and the quantized Hall conductance, arise in a self-consistent fashion.

Non-Abelian Anyons: Statistical Repulsion and Topological Quantum Computation

Viktor Qvarfordt

As opposed to classical mechanics, quantum mechanical particles can be truly identical and lead to new and interesting phenomena. Identical particles can be of different types, determined by their exchange symmetry, which in turn gives rise to statistical repulsion. The exchange symmetry is given by a representation of the exchange group; the fundamental group of the configuration space of identical particles. In three dimensions the exchange group is the permutation group and there are only two types of identical particles; bosons and fermions. While any number of bosons can be at the same place or in the same state, fermions repel each other. In two dimensions the exchange group is the braid group and essentially any exchange symmetry is allowed, such particles are called anyons. Abelian anyons are described by abelian representations of the exchange group and can be seen as giving a continuous interpolation between bosons and fermions. Non-abelian anyons are much more complex and their statistical repulsion is yet largely unexplored. We use the framework of modular tensor categories to show how the statistical repulsion of non-abelian anyons depends on the exchange symmetry. The Fibonacci anyon model is studied, for which explicit results are obtained. We also show how Fibonacci anyons can be used to implement topological quantum computation, providing topologically stable quantum information encoded in the state of non-abelian anyons that can be manipulated via the non-abelian exchange symmetry.

Second Virial Coefficient of Anyons with Spins

Shun-Qing Shen, Jianming Cai, Ruibao Tao

We study the statistical properties of a two-dimensional gas of free anyone with spin. The concept of spin carried by anyons has been discussed in detail based on the two-dimensional Dirac equation. The second virial coefficient for the gas is evaluated and is found that it is the result of Arovas et al.[1] but not the result of Blum et al.[2] that is recovered, which is periodical for the statistical parameter with the length .

Numerical simulation of non-Abelian anyons

Nico Kirchner, Darragh Millar, Babatunde M. Ayeni +3 more

Two-dimensional systems such as quantum spin liquids or fractional quantum Hall systems exhibit anyonic excitations that possess more general statistics than bosons or fermions. This exotic statistics makes it challenging to solve even a many-body system of non-interacting anyons. We introduce an algorithm that allows to simulate anyonic tight-binding Hamiltonians on two-dimensional lattices. The algorithm is directly derived from the low energy topological quantum field theory and is suited for general Abelian and non-Abelian anyon models. As concrete examples, we apply the algorithm to study the energy level spacing statistics, which reveals level repulsion for free semions, Fibonacci anyons, and Ising anyons. Additionally, we simulate nonequilibrium quench dynamics, where we observe that the density distribution becomes homogeneous for large times---indicating thermalization.

Non-Abelian quantum Hall states at strong Landau level mixing: finding anyons with first-principles AI

Pierre-Antoine Graham, Ahmed Abouelkomsan, Liang Fu

Non-Abelian anyons, strange particles forming the basis of fault-tolerant topological quantum computing, are predicted to emerge in fractional quantum Hall states at even-denominator filling factors. Identifying which topological order is realized has proven to be a challenging problem that requires an accurate, non-perturbative treatment of realistic Landau level mixing, which has so far been missing from theoretical studies. Here we present the first complete solution of non-Abelian quantum Hall problem that includes all electrons and all Landau levels, for spin-polarized electrons at filling factor $ν= 3/2$. We develop a momentum-resolved neural-network variational wave function, optimized solely on the microscopic Hamiltonian, which gives direct access to the topologically degenerate ground states. Without any physics input about the expected outcome, it discovers a degenerate ground-state manifold whose entanglement reveals anyons with quantum dimension $\sqrt{2}$, the hallmark of Ising-type non-Abelian order. By directly computing the overlap with trial wave functions, we further show that Landau level mixing favors the anti-Pfaffian over other candidate states. Our results demonstrate the power of neural-network wave functions in finding and characterizing non-Abelian anyons from first principles, in regimes of strong Landau level mixing, relevant to many recent experiments.
