The partition function with boundary conditions for various two-dimensional Ising models is examined and previously unobserved properties of conformal invariance and universality are established numerically.
We compute the exact partition function, the universal ground state degeneracy and boundary state of the 2-D Ising model with boundary magnetic field at off-critical temperatures. The model has a domain that exhibits states localized near the boundaries. We study this domain of boundary bound state and derive exact expressions for the ``g function'' and boundary state for all temperatures and boundary magnetic fields. In the massless limit we recover the boundary renormalization group flow between the conformally invariant free and fixed boundary conditions.
We consider Ising strips with width N and periodic boundary conditions and Ising squares with edge length N and special partially periodic boundaries. Assuming invariance of the spin correlations under conformal mappings of the infinite plane onto the strip and square, we determine the second and fourth moments of the total magnetization M from the known bulk two- and four-spin correlation functions at criticality. For both geometries the predictions of conformal invariance for universal asymptotic forms involving the ratio 〈M4〉〈M2${〉}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$ as N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty} are in excellent agreement with transfer-matrix results.
Abstract We present a systematic method to calculate the universal scaling functions for the critical Casimir force and the according potential of the two-dimensional Ising model with various boundary conditions. Therefore we start with the dimer representation of the corresponding partition function Z on an L × M square lattice, wrapped around a torus with aspect ratio ρ = L / M . By assuming periodic boundary conditions and translational invariance in at least one direction, we systematically reduce the problem to a 2 × 2 transfer matrix representation. For the torus we first reproduce the results by Kaufman and then give a detailed calculation of the scaling functions. Afterwards we present the calculation for the cylinder with open boundary conditions. All scaling functions are given in form of combinations of infinite products and integrals. Our results reproduce the known scaling functions in the limit of thin films ρ → 0 . Additionally, for the cylinder at criticality our results confirm the predictions from conformal field theory.
