Variational Multi-Time Green’s Functions for Nonequilibrium Quantum Fields

Mohamed Benarous

The time-dependent variational principle proposed by Balian and Vénéroni is used to provide the best approximation to the generating functional for multi-time Green’s functions of a set of (bosonic) observables Qµ. By suitably restricting the trial spaces, the computation of the two-time Green’s function, obtained by a second order expansion in the sources, is considerably simplified. This leads to a tractable formalism suited to quantum fields out of equilibrium. We propose an illustration on the finite temperature Φ4-theory in curved space and coupled to gravity.

Non-Equilibrium Green’s Functions: Variational Relations and Approximations for Particle Interactions

Norman J. M. Horing

Abstract Chapter 09 Nonequilibrium Green’s functions (NEGF), including coupled-correlated (C) single- and multi-particle Green’s functions, are defined as averages weighted with the time-development operator U(t0+τ,t0). Linear conductivity is exhibited as a two-particle equilibrium Green’s function (Kubo-type formulation). Admitting particle sources (S:η,η+) and non-conservation of number, the non-equilibrium multi-particle Green’s functions are constructed with numbers of creation and annihilation operators that may differ, and they may be derived as variational derivatives with respect to sources η,η+ of a generating functional eW=TrU(t0+τ,t0)CS/TrU(t0+τ,t0)C. (In the non-interacting case this yields the n-particle Green’s function as a permanent/determinant of single-particle Green’s functions.) These variational relations yield a symmetric set of multi-particle Green’s function equations. Cumulants and the Linked Cluster Theorem are discussed and the Random Phase Approximation (RPA) is derived variationally. Schwinger’s variational differential formulation of perturbation theories for the Green’s function, self-energy, vertex operator, and also shielded potential perturbation theory, are reviewed. The Langreth Algebra arises from analytic continuation of integration of products of Green’s functions in imaginary time to the real-time axis with time-ordering along the integration contour in the complex time plane. An account of the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz is presented.

Nonequilibrium Green function theory for excitation and transport in atoms and molecules

Adrian Stan and R Leeuwen Nils Erik Dahlen

In this work we discuss the application of nonequilibrium Green functions theory to atomic and molecular systems with the aim to study charge and energy transport in these systems. We apply the Kadanoff-Baym equations to atoms and diatomic molecules initially in the ground state. The results obtained for the correlated initial states are used to analyze variational energy functionals of the Green function which are shown to perform very well. We further show an application of the Kadanoff-Baym equations to a molecule exposed to an external laser field. Finally we discuss the connection between nonequilibrium Green function theory and time-dependent density-functional theory with the aim to develop better density functionals in order to treat larger systems than those attainable with the nonequilibrium Green function method.
