Abstract

We introduce a new variational characterization of Gaussian diffusion processes as minimum uncertainty states. We then define a variational method constrained by kinematics of diffusions and Schrodinger dynamics to seek states of local minimum uncertainty for general non-harmonic potentials.

DIFFUSION PROCESSES AND COHERENT STATES

S. De Martino, Silvio De Siena, Fabrizio Illuminati

It is shown that uncertainty relations, as well as coherent and squeezed states, are structural properties of stochastic processes with Fokker-Planck dynamics. The quantum mechanical coherent and squeezed states are explicitly constructed via Nelson stochastic quantization. The method is applied to derive new minimum uncertainty states in time-dependent oscillator potentials. 1

Coherent states for general potentials. I. Formalism

Michael Martin Nieto, L. M. Simmons

We first review the properties of the harmonic-oscillator coherent states which can be equivalently defined as (a) a specific subset of the $x\ensuremath{-}p$ minimum-uncertainty states, (b) eigenstates of the annihilation operator, or (c) states created by a certain unitary exponential displacement operator. Then we present a new method for finding coherent states for particles in general potentials. Its basis is the desire to find those states which most nearly follow the classical motion, but it is most nearly a generalization of the minimum-uncertainty method. The properties of these states are discussed in detail. Next we show that the annihilation operator and displacement operator methods, as heretofore defined, cannot be applied to general potentials (whose eigenvalues are not equally spaced). We define a generalization of these methods but show that the states so defined are not, in general, equivalent to the minimum-uncertainty coherent states. We discuss a number of properties of our coherent states and the procedures we have used.

Lagrangians of stochastic mechanics

Marc-Thierry Jaekel

The stochastic variational principle which applies to diffusions and extremises the mean value of the classical action is generalised to include non-Markovian diffusions. A whole family of different stochastic actions, labelled by a time-dependent parameter, is obtained and all of them are shown to lead to the Shrodinger equation. As a result, the well known degeneracy of the class of stochastic processes which correspond to a single quantum state is recovered. It is also related to an arbitrariness in the choice of the noise which can occur in two places: in the definition of the noise, through the time-dependent parameter, and in the auto-correlations of the noise which, although constant during the variational method, remain undetermined. The whole scheme is given a covariant form.
