Multiparticle correlations in quaternionic quantum systems

Abstract

We investigate the outcome of measurements on correlated, few-body quantum systems described by a quaternionic quantum mechanics that allows for regions of quaternionic curvature. We find that a multiparticle interferometry experiment using a correlated system of four nonrelativistic, spin-half particles has the potential to detect the presence of quaternionic curvature. Two-body systems, however, are shown to give predictions identical to those of standard quantum mechanics when relative angles are used in the construction of the operators corresponding to measurements.

Quantum Dynamics in Regions of Quaternionic Curvature

Steven P. Brumby, Gayatri Joshi

The complex unit appearing in the equations of quantum mechanics is generalised to a quaternionic structure on spacetime, leading to the consideration of complex quantum mechanical particles whose dynamical behaviour is governed by inhomogeneous Dirac and Schrödinger equations. Mixing of hyper-complex components of wavefunctions occurs through their interaction with potentials dissipative into the extra quaternionic degrees of freedom. An interferometric experiment is analysed to illustrate the effect.

Quaternionic potentials in non-relativistic quantum mechanics

Stefano De Leo, Gisele Cristina Ducati, C. C. Nishi

We discuss the Schrödinger equation in the presence of quaternionic potentials. The study is performed analytically as long as it proves possible, when not, we resort to numerical calculations. The results obtained could be useful to investigate an underlying quaternionic quantum dynamics in particle physics. Experimental tests and proposals to observe quaternionic quantum effects by neutron interferometry are briefly reviewed.

Measuring the Quantum Phase of Multiphoton Systems

Ian Baum, Riley B. Dawkins, Jannatul Ferdous +1 more

The quantum phase of a multiparticle system has remained a long-standing mystery in quantum physics. The absence of a phase operator that faithfully represents this physical quantity has prevented the formulation of a meaningful uncertainty relation with particle number. Here, we resolve this problem by measuring, for the first time, the quantum phase of multiparticle systems containing up to fifteen particles. We achieve this through a new quantum state tomography scheme that combines homodyne interferometry with photon-number-resolving detection. This approach enables us to reconstruct complementary photon-number and phase representations and establish the corresponding number-phase uncertainty relation. Our measurements further provide access to the mutually unbiased basis of a multiparticle system, a fundamental resource for multiparticle quantum information processing. Furthermore, we report the spatially resolved characterization of the quantum phase. These results provide an operational framework for measuring quantum phase in multiparticle systems, with implications for fundamental quantum physics and scalable multiparticle quantum technologies.

Cluster Properties of Multiparticle Systems

W. Hunziker

The object of investigation is a system of N particles in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The particles interact via two- or many-body potentials, for which a sufficient condition is that they be square integrable in the relative coordinates of the interacting particles. Cluster properties are derived for the time translation operator, for the wave operators, for the transition probabilities, and for the S operator.

Schwinger Algebra for Quaternionic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract: It is shown that the measurement algebra of Schwinger, a characterization of the properties of Pauli measurements of the first and second kinds, forming the foundation of his formulation of quantum mechanics over the complex field, has a quaternionic generalization. In this quaternionic measurement algebra some of the notions of quaternionic quantum mechanics are clarified. The conditions imposed on the form of the corresponding quantum field theory are studied, and the quantum fields are constructed. It is shown that the resulting quantum fields coincide with the fermion or boson annihilation-creation operators obtained by Razon and Horwitz in the limit in which the number of particles in physical states N → ∞.

Multiparticle and Multichannel Methods

Stephen L. Adler

Abstract In the preceding chapters we have given a detailed discussion of quaternionic scattering theory for the case of a single particle incident on a fixed external scattering potential. In complex quantum mechanics the external potential problem is of course only an idealized model, obtained from the physically more realistic case of multiparticle scattering when all particles except the incoming projectile are very heavy, or, in the case of the space-translationinvariant two-body problem, as the exact formulation of the internal motion after separation of the center of mass motion.
