Boundary S-matrix for the integrable q-Potts model

Abstract

The 2D off-critical q-state Potts model with boundaries was studied as a factorizable relativistic scattering theory. The scattering S-matrices for particles reflecting off the boundaries were obtained for the cases of `fixed` and `free` boundary conditions. In the Ising limit, the computed results agreed with recent work.

BOUNDARY S MATRIX FOR THE TRICRITICAL ISING MODEL

LEUNG CHIM

The tricritical Ising model perturbed by the subleading energy operator [Formula: see text] was known to be an integrable scattering theory of massive kinks,14 and in fact it preserves supersymmetry. We consider here the model defined on the half-plane with a boundary and compute the associated factorizable boundary S matrix. The conformal boundary conditions of this model are identified and the corresponding S matrices are found. We also show how some of these S matrices can be perturbed and generate “flows” between different boundary conditions.

The R-matrix bootstrap for the 2d O(N) bosonic model with a boundary

Martı́n Kruczenski

The S-matrix bootstrap is extended to a 1+1d theory with O(N) symmetry and a boundary in what we call the R-matrix bootstrap since the quantity of interest is the reflection matrix (R-matrix). Given a bulk S-matrix, the space of allowed R-matrices is an infinite dimensional convex space from which we plot a two dimensional section given by a convex domain on a 2d plane. In certain cases, at the boundary of the domain, we find vertices corresponding to integrable R-matrices with no free parameters. In other cases, when there is a one-parameter family of integrable R-matrices, the whole boundary represents integrable theories. We also consider R-matrices which are analytic in an extended region beyond the physical cuts, thus forbidding poles (resonances) in that region. In certain models, this drastically reduces the allowed space of R-matrices leading to new vertices that again correspond to integrable theories. We also work out the dual problem, in particular in the case of extended analyticity, the dual function has cuts on the physical line whenever unitarity is saturated. For the periodic Yang-Baxter solution that has zero transmission, we computed the R-matrix initially using the bootstrap and then derived its previously unknown analytic form.

Boundary critical phenomena in the three-state Potts model

Ian K. Affleck, Masaki Oshikawa, Hubert Saleur

Boundary critical phenomena are studied in the three-state Potts model in two dimensions using conformal field theory, duality and renormalization group methods. A presumably complete set of boundary conditions is obtained using both fusion and orbifold methods. Besides the previously known free, fixed and mixed boundary conditions a new one is obtained. This illustrates the necessity of considering fusion with operators that do not occur in the bulk spectrum, to obtain all boundary conditions. It is shown that this new boundary condition is dual to the mixed ones. The phase diagram for the quantum chain version of the Potts model is analysed using duality and renormalization group arguments.

INTEGRALS OF MOTION IN SCALING 3-STATE POTTS MODEL FIELD THEORY

Al.B. Zamolodchikov

Some nontrivial integrals of motion for the scaling 3-state Potts model are constructed explicitly. These integrals of motion prove the corresponding scattering matrix to be factorizable and allow one to “derive” this S-matrix under a few natural assumptions.

Exact S-matrices and related algebraic structures in two- dimensional quantum systems

Zorawar S. Bassi

This thesis studies exact S-matrices and integrability aspects for several two-dimensional quantum systems. The emphasis is on the algebraic structures that underlie exact solvability in two dimensions. The first project details the construction of an optics model for n-level atoms interacting with an electromagnetic field. In the slowly varying envelope and rotating wave approximations, the equations of motion are shown to have a zero-curvature representation, implying an infinite set of quantum conservation laws. The second system investigated is a disordered field theory of Dirac fermions, which after averaging over the potential can be expressed as an osp(2|2) current- current model. The current-current model in turn can be viewed as the fully renormalized version of an osp(2]2) (1) (marginal) Toda system. Non-local charges satisfying the Uq[osp(2|2)(1)] quantum superalgebra are constructed. The corresponding quantum affine symmetry is used to build the Toda S-matrix for the vector representation. The exact S-matrix for the fundamental “solitons” of the osp(2|2) current-current model is then obtained by taking the marginal limit of the Toda S-matrix. The remaining two projects shift the focus to boundary theories. In the first boundary study, two massive versions of the anisotropic spin 1/2 Kondo model are introduced. The two models have the same bulk sine-Gordon interactions but differ in their boundary terms. At the free fermion point, each of the models can be understood as two decoupled Ising models in boundary magnetic fields. Integrability of the models is discussed and boundary S-matrices at and away from the free fermion point are constructed. The final system studied describes an Anderson impurity in a BCS superconductor. This model can be mapped onto an Ising boundary field theory. The boundary S - matrix is shown to exhibit Andreev scattering and the existence of bound states lying inside the superconducting gap.
