MULTIVALUED FIELDS ON THE COMPLEX PLANE AND BRAID GROUP STATISTICS

Abstract

In this paper we study a class of theories of free particles on the complex plane satisfying a non-Abelian statistics. This kind of particles are generalizations of the anyons and are sometimes called plectons. The peculiarity of these theories is that they are associated to free conformal field theories defined on Riemann surfaces with a discrete and non-Abelian group of authomorphisms Dm. More explicitly, the plectons appear here as “induced vertex operators” that simulate, on the complex plane, the nontrivial topology of the Riemann surface. In order to express the local exchange algebra of the particles, one is led to introduce an R matrix satisfying a multiparameter generalization of the usual Yang-Baxter equations. It is interesting that analogous generalizations have already been investigated in connection with integrable models, in which the spectral parameter takes its values on a Riemann surface that is in many respects similar to the Riemann surfaces we are studying here. The explicit form of the R matrices mentioned above can be also used to define a multiparameter version of the quantum complex hyperplane.

STRANGE STATISTICS, BRAID GROUP REPRESENTATIONS AND MULTIPOINT FUNCTIONS IN THE N-COMPONENT MODEL

H. C. Lee, Mo -L Ge, M Couture +1 more

The statistics of fields in low dimensions is studied from the point of view of the braid group Bn of n strings. Explicit representations MR for the N-component model, N=2 to 5, are derived by solving the Yang-Baxter-like braid group relations for the statistical matrix R, which describes the transformation of the bilinear product of two N-component fields under the transposition of coordinates. When R2≠1 the statistics is neither Bose-Einstein nor Fermi-Dirac; it is strange. It is shown that for each N, the N+1 parameter family of solutions obtained is the most general one under a given set of constraints including “charge” conservation. Extended Nth order (N>2) Alexander-Conway relations for link polynomials are derived. They depend nonhomogeneously only on one of the N+1 parameters. The N=3 and 4 ones agree with those previously derived by Akutsu et al. Flat connections ω defining integrable systems of the N-component model are derived from the representations. The monodromy of the solution of such a system also carries a representation Mω of Pn⊂Bn. For N=2, Mω=MR, but the equality may not hold in general. The connections also lead directly to solutions of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. A generalization of Kohno’s monodromy representation of Bn associated with the algebra sl(N,C) is given. Applications of the braid group representations to statistical models, conformal field theory and many-body systems of extended objects are briefly discussed.

Quantum Field Theory of Particles with Braid Group Statistics in 2+1 Dimenions

Jens Mund

The present thesis is concerned with the local quantum physics of relativistic particles and fields in three space-time dimensions, whose statistics is to be described by a representation of the braid group -- so-called plektons or, if the representation is Abelian, anyons. In particular the issue of the existence of free anyonic fields is addressed. In our context, these are operators affiliated with the `local´ field algebras and creating only single particle vectors from the vacuum. (Localizability here refers to regions extending to infinity in some spacelike direction.) Under a mild regularity condition for these fields, we can derive commutation relations which are not compatible with braid group statistics. Further, model-independent results concerning the PCT operator and the connection of spin and statistics are obtained. Assuming the observable algebra to satisfy the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem, a PCT theorem for plektons is derived. For anyons it is shown that the Bisognano-Wichmann property of the observable algebra lifts, in a `twisted´ version, to the field algebra. In particular, the PCT-operator coincides, up to a `twist operator´, with the modular conjugation of the field algebra associated to a standard wedge region. From this fact, the spin-statistics theorem for anyons is derived. The structure of the Hilbert space of scattering states of plektons and anyons is further clarified. It is known to be fixed by the relevant representations of the braid group and by the rules which determine the charges contained in the scattering states (the `fusion´ rules). We present Møller operators W+ and W- from the spaces of outgoing and incoming scattering states into a reference Hilbert space, which translate the physical ray representation of the Poincaré group on the spaces of scattering states into a canonical ray representation on the reference Hilbert space. A new result concerns the `incoming free PCT operator´, i.e. the product of the PCT operator with the S-matrix S = ( W+)* W- : It is exhibited how this model-independent operator acts in the reference Hilbert space. In the case of anyons, the fusion rules are trivial and the relevant representations of the braid group are classified by a finite set of complex numbers, namely the statistics parameters of the particles under consideration. Hence in the anyonic case the above results yield explicit formulae for the ray representation of the Poincaré group and for the incoming free PCT-operator. In view of the Bisognano-Wichmann property, we have thereby constructed the product of the Tomita operator associated to any given wedge region with the S-matrix, i.e. the `incoming free´ Tomita-operator of the anyonic field algebra.

BRAID STATISTICS IN LOCAL QUANTUM THEORY

Jürg Martin Fröhlich, Fabrizio Gabbiani

We present details of a mathematical theory of superselection sectors and their statistics in local quantum theory over (two- and) three-dimensional space-time. The framework for our analysis is algebraic quantum field theory. Statistics of superselection sectors in three-dimensional local quantum theory with charges not localizable in bounded space-time regions and in two-dimensional chiral theories is described in terms of unitary representations of the braid groups generated by certain Yang-Baxter matrices. We describe the beginnings of a systematic classification of those representations. Our analysis makes contact with the classification theory of subfactors initiated by Jones. We prove a general theorem on the connection between spin and statistics in theories with braid statistics. We also show that every theory with braid statistics gives rise to a “Verlinde algebra”. It determines a projective representation of SL(2, ℤ) and, presumably, of the mapping class group of any Riemann surface, even if the theory does not display conformal symmetry.

Braid group statistics and exchange matrices of non-abelian anyons : with representations in Clifford algebra

Erik Sönnerlind, Gustav Brage

When leaving classical physics and entering the realm of quantum physics, there are many new concepts being introduced. One of the most fundamental ideas in quantum mechanics is that particles no longer have exact known positions, but instead expected values and prob- abilities. This leads to the phenomena of truly identical particles, since they no longer can be distinguished simply by their positions. An important property differentiating different kinds of particles is how a system behaves when two such identical particles are exchanged. Historically, this divided particles into bosons and fermions, corresponding to symmetry and antisymmetry under an exchange. However, in two dimensions a new type of particle appears. These particles are called anyons, and behave differently when particles are exchanged. Anyons can be further divided into abelian and non-abelian anyons, of which this thesis will focus on the latter. The ex- changes can then be represented by the fundamental group of the configuration space of the particles, and in two dimensions this fundamental group is the braid group. Using rotors from a Clifford algebra and studying excitations of Majorana fermions, this thesis will show a way to calculate the exchange matrices of non-abelian anyons, and their corresponding eigenvalues. Furthermore, suggestions on a generalization of this framework along with areas where it can be applied are given.

Quantum logic gates from Dirac quasiparticles

Eduardo C. Marino, Jardel da Costa Brozeguini

We show that one of the fundamental operations of topological quantum computation, namely the non-Abelian braiding of identical particles, can be physically realized in a general system of Dirac quasiparticles in 1 + 1D. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the different Euclidean correlation functions of Dirac fields, which are conveniently expressed as functions of a complex variable. When the Dirac field is an (Abelian) anyon with statistics parameter s (2 s not an integer), we show that the associated Majorana states of such a field present non-Abelian statistics. The explicit form of the unitary, non-commuting (monodromy) matrices generated upon braiding is derived as a function of s and is shown to satisfy the Yang–Baxter algebra. For the special case of s = 1/4, we show that the braiding matrices become the logic gates NOT, CNOT,… required in the algorithms of universal quantum computation. We suggest that maybe polyacetylene, alternately doped with alkali and halogen atoms, is a potential candidate for a physical material realization of the system studied here.

Exchange and Exclusion in the Non-abelian Anyon Gas

Douglas Lundholm, Viktor Qvarfordt

Abstract We review and develop the many-body spectral theory of ideal anyons, i.e. identical quantum particles in the plane whose exchange rules are governed by unitary representations of the braid group on N strands. Allowing for arbitrary rank (dependent on N ) and non-abelian representations, and letting $$N \rightarrow \infty $$ N → ∞ , this defines the ideal non-abelian many-anyon gas. We compute exchange operators and phases for a common and wide class of representations defined by fusion algebras, including the Fibonacci and Ising anyon models. Furthermore, we extend methods of statistical repulsion (Poincaré and Hardy inequalities) and a local exclusion principle (also implying a Lieb–Thirring inequality) developed for abelian anyons to arbitrary geometric anyon models, i.e. arbitrary sequences of unitary representations of the braid group, for which two-anyon exchange is nontrivial.
