Integral representation of the Ising model

Abstract

The partition function of the 2D Ising model coupled to an external magnetic field is studied. We show that the sum over the spin variables can be reduced to an integration over a finite number of variables. This integration must be performed numerically. But in order to reduce the partition function we must introduce as many different coupling constants as spin variables. The total memory that we need in order to store these coupling constants imposed important restrictions on the number of spin variables.

An empirical partition function for two-dimensional Ising Model in an external magnetic field

Rong Wei

There is no an accepted exact partition function (PF) for the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model with a non-zero external magnetic field to our knowledge. Here we infer an empirical PF for such an Ising model. We compare the PFs for two finite-size Ising lattices ($4\times 4$ and $4\times 6$) from this empirical PF with those from Wei (2018) (Wei, R.Q., 2018. An exact solution to the partition function of the finite-size Ising Model, arXiv: General Physics: 1805.01366.), and find that they are consistent very well. Based on this empirical PF, we further analyze and calculate the thermodynamic functions (heat capacity, magnetization, susceptibility) of this 2D Ising model and discuss the model's singularity semiquantitatively. Analysis and calculations from this PF show that they are coincident with those from other related studies; Especially the 2D Ising model in an external magnetic field has spontaneous magnetization (SM) calling the phenomenon at the critical temperature a phase transition, and the SM decreases with the increasing temperature. However, the decreasing variation of the SM here is different from that obtained by Yang (1952) from the 2D Ising model in a weak magnetic field.

An exact solution to the partition function of the finite-size Ising Model

Rong Wei

There is no an exact solution to three-dimensional (3D) finite-size Ising model (referred to as the Ising model hereafter for simplicity) and even two-dimensional (2D) Ising model with non-zero external field to our knowledge. Here by using an elementary but rigorous method, we obtain an exact solution to the partition function of the Ising model with $N$ lattice sites. It is a sum of $2^N$ exponential functions and holds for $D$-dimensional ($D=1,2,3,...$) Ising model with or without the external field. This solution provides a new insight into the problem of the Ising model and the related difficulties, and new understanding of the classic exact solutions for one-dimensional (1D) (Kramers and Wannier, 1941) or 2D Ising model (Onsager, 1944). With this solution, the specific heat and magnetisation of a simple 3D Ising model are calculated, which are consistent with the results from experiments and/or numerical simulations. Furthermore, the solution here and the related approaches, can also be available to other models like the percolation and/or the Potts model.

Exact solution of d-dimensional ising model for finite continuous spins (D) and non-zero external field (B)

Naveen Kumar

Making use of the Stratonovich linearization procedure for bilinear exponents and certain eigenvalue properties of the generalised Jacobi matrices, an exact expression has been obtained, in a closed form, for the partition function of the d (=3) dimensional, nearest neighbour coupled, Ising model for finite continuous spins(=D) in the presence of an external field. A Gaussian measure has been chosen for integration over the spin space. The method admits complete generalisation with respect to the dimensionality, the range of interaction and the sign of the interaction constant J (ferro- or antiferromagnetic). All thermodynamical quantities of interest can be obtained by taking suitable partial derivatives of the partition function. The critical indices can be ascertained for the cases of d=3 for which the theory predicts a second-order phase transition. For the ferromagnetic case(J>0), the spontaneous magnetisation vanishes identically the temperature T>T (the transition temperarture) and the magnetic susceptibility follows essentially the Curie Weiss Law.

Algorithmic proof for the completeness of the two-dimensional Ising model

Vahid Karimipour, Mohammad Hossein Zarei

We show that the two-dimensional (2D) Ising model is complete, in the sense that the partition function of any lattice model on any graph is equal to the partition function of the 2D Ising model with complex coupling. The latter model has all its spin-spin coupling equal to $i\frac{\ensuremath{\pi}}{4}$ and all parameters of the original model are contained in the local magnetic fields of the Ising model. This result has already been derived by using techniques from quantum information theory and by exploiting the universality of cluster states. Here we do not use the quantum formalism and hence make the completeness result accessible to a wide audience. Furthermore, our method has the advantage of being algorithmic in nature so that, by following a set of simple graphical transformations, one is able to transform any discrete lattice model to an Ising model defined on a (polynomially) larger 2D lattice.

Approaches to numerical solution of 2D Ising model

Konstantin S Soldatov, Konstantin Valentinovich Nefedev, Vitalii Yu. Kapitan +1 more

Parallel algorithm of partition function calculation of two-dimensional Ising model for systems with a finite number of spins was developed. Within a method of complete enumeration by using MPI technology with subsequent optimization of a parallel code time of calculations was reduced considerably. Partition function was calculated for systems of 16, 25, 36 Ising spins. Based on the obtained results, main thermodynamic and magnetic values dependences (such as heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, mean square magnetization) for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions was investigated. The analysis of a different configurations contribution showed, that states with the minimum energy have essential influence on dependences of thermodynamic values. Comparison with the results obtained by the Wang Landau algorithm was performed.

Free Fermions and Two-Dimensional Ising Model

V. N. Plechko

The two-dimensional Ising model is representable as a lattice free-fermion field theory in terms of the integral over anticommuting Grassmann variables. The exact solution in a zero magnetic field then follows by evaluating Gaussian fermionic integral for partition function. It is argued that by switching on of a non-zero magnetic field the non-local and non-Gaussian fermionic terms appear in the action, which rather imply approximating methods of the analysis.
