Abstract

We analyze the universal transport behavior in 1D and 2D fermionic systems by following the unified framework provided by bosonization. The role played by the adiabatic transition between interacting and noninteracting regions is emphasized.

Quantum Phase Transitions in 2d Quantum Liquids

Adriaan M. J. Schakel

These lectures provide a pedagogical introduction to the theory of continuous quantum phase transitions. Various two-dimensional condensed matter systems, such as a superconducting film, a quantum Hall liquid, and an array of Josephson junctions, undergo such a phase transition at the absolute zero of temperature. The universality classes defined by repulsively interacting bosons with and without disorder are shown to play a central role in understanding these systems.

An introduction to bosonization and aome of its applications

Sumathi Rao, Diptiman Sen

We discuss the technique of bosonization for studying systems of interacting fermions in one dimension. After briefly reviewing the low-energy properties of Fermi and Luttinger liquids, we present some of the relations between bosonic and fermionic operators in one dimension. We use these relations to calculate the correlation functions and the renormalization group properties of various operators for a system of spinless fermions. We then apply the methods of bosonization to study the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain, the Hubbard model in one dimension, and transport in clean quantum wires and in the presence of isolated impurities.

BOSONIZATION FOR 2D INTERACTING FERMION SYSTEMS: NON-FERMI LIQUID BEHAVIOR

Y. YU, Y.M. LI, N. d’AMBRUMENIL

Non-Fermi liquid behavior is found for the first time in a two-dimensional (2D) system with nonsingular interactions using Haldane’s bosonization scheme. The bosonized system is solved exactly by a generalized Bogolubov transformation. The fermion momentum distribution, calculated using a generalized Mattis-Lieb technique, exhibits a nonuniversal power law in the vicinity of the Fermi surface for intermediate interaction strengths.

BOSONIZATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL HUBBARD MODEL

Yu-Liang Liu, Zhao-Bin Su

By analyzing one-dimensional (1D) chains arranged into a two-dimensional (2D) mesh and considering electrons tunneling from chain to chain at the intersection points, we use the 1D bosonization methods to describe the 2D Hubbard model, and find that the 2D Hubbard model can be completely represented by the spin and charge fields. It may provide evidence for spin and charge separation in some 2D quantum systems.
