Abstract

The cutoff scheme dependence in the several formulations of the Exact Renormalization Group (ERG) is investigated. It is shown that the cutoff scheme dependence of the Wilsonian effective action is regarded as a certain coordinate transformation on the theory space. From this observation the Wilsonian effective actions are found to suffer from strong dependence on the schemes even in the infra-red asymptotic region for massive theories. However there is no such scheme dependence in the one particle irreducible parts of them, which is called the effective average actions. We also derive the explicit form of the Polchinski RG equation in the sharp cutoff limit. Finally this equation is shown to be identical with the Wegner-Houghton RG equation.

Momentum Scale Expansion of Sharp Cutoff Flow Equations

Tim R. Morris

We show how the exact renormalization group for the effective action with a sharp momentum cutoff, may be organised by expanding one-particle irreducible parts in terms of homogeneous functions of momenta of integer degree (Taylor expansions not being possible). A systematic series of approximations -- the O(p^M) approximations -- result from discarding from these parts, all terms of higher than the M^{\\rm th} degree. These approximations preserve a field reparametrization invariance, ensuring that the field's anomalous dimension is unambiguously determined. The lowest order approximation coincides with the local potential approximation to the Wegner-Houghton equations. We discuss the practical difficulties with extending the approximation beyond O(p^0).

Wilsonian renormalization group in the functional non-perturbative approach

Gian Paolo Vacca

We consider a functional relation between a given Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) flow, which has to be related to a specific coarse-graining procedure, and an infinite family of (UV cutoff) scale-dependent field redefinitions. Within this framework, one can define a family of Wilsonian proper-time (PT) exact RG equations associated to an arbitrary regulator function. New applications of these RG flow schemes to the Ising Universality class in three dimensions in the derivative expansion are shortly illustrated.

Renormalization of the Periodic Scalar Field Theory by Polchinski's Renormalization Group Method

I. Nándori, Kornél Sailer, Ulrich D. Jentschura +1 more

The renormalization group (RG) flow for the two-dimensional sine-Gordon model is determined by means of Polchinski's RG equation at next-to-leading order in the derivative expansion. In this work we have two different goals, (i) to consider the renormalization scheme-dependence of Polchinski's method by matching Polchinski's equation with the Wegner-Houghton equation and with the real space RG equations for the two-dimensional dilute Coulomb-gas, (ii) to go beyond the local potential approximation in the gradient expansion in order to clarify the supposed role of the field-dependent wave-function renormalization. The well-known Coleman fixed point of the sine-Gordon model is recovered after linearization, whereas the flow exhibits strong dependence on the choice of the renormalization scheme when non-linear terms are kept. The RG flow is compared to those obtained in the Wegner-Houghton approach and in the dilute gas approximation for the two-dimensional Coulomb-gas.

Cutoff-independent RG flow equations for two-coupled chains model

Thiago Prudêncio

One-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems coupled via transverse hopping and presence of interband interactions can converge to a Luttinger liquid state or diverge to an even more intricate behavior, as a Mott state. Explicit consideration of the renormalization group (RG) flow of the Fermi points in the Fermi surface, turns the classification of phase transitions more challenging. We reconsider the recent paper for the spinless case [E. Correa and A. Ferraz, Eur. Phys. J. B 87 (2014) 51], where RG flow equations are derived in a cutoff-dependent form up to two-loops order. We demonstrate that the cutoff-dependence can be removed by rewriting the RG flow equations in terms of the energy scale variable. In our paper, the RG flow equations assume a cutoff-independent form and leads to fixed points independent of cutoff choice. The consequence is the invariance under cutoff transformations, more suitable for classifying universality classes and phase transitions.

Self-energy effects in the Polchinski and Wick-ordered renormalization-group approaches

A. A. Katanin

I discuss functional renormalization group (fRG) schemes, which allow for non-perturbative treatment of the self-energy effects and do not rely on the one-particle irreducible functional. In particular, I consider the Polchinski or Wick-ordered scheme with amputation of full (instead of bare) Green functions, as well as more general schemes, and establish their relation to the 'dynamical adjustment propagator' scheme by Salmhofer (2007 Ann. Phys., Lpz. 16 171). While in the Polchinski scheme the amputation of full (instead of bare) Green functions improves treatment of the self-energy effects, the structure of the corresponding equations is not suitable to treat strong-coupling problems; it is also not evident how the mean-field solution of these problems is recovered in this scheme. For the Wick-ordered scheme, fully or partly excluding tadpole diagrams one can obtain forms of fRG hierarchy, which are suitable to treat strong-coupling problems. In particular, I emphasize the usefulness of the schemes, which are local in the cutoff parameter, and compare them to the one-particle irreducible approach.

Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice: Renormalization-group theory

Dražen Zanchi, Heinz J. Schulz

We formulate the exact Wilsonian renormalization group for a system of interacting fermions on a lattice. The flow equations for all vertices of the Wilson effective action are expressed in the form of the Polchinski equation. The advantage of this renormalization scheme is that the flow itself has a physical interpretation, i.e., the cutoff has the meaning of the temperature. We apply this method to the Hubbard model on a square lattice using both zero- and finite-temperature methods. Truncating the effective action at the sixth term in fermionic variables and neglecting self-energy renormalization, we obtain the one-loop functional renormalization equations for the effective interaction. We find the temperature of the instability ${T}_{c}^{\mathrm{RG}}$ as a function of doping. Furthermore we calculate the renormalization of the angle-resolved correlation functions for the superconductivity (SC) and for the antiferromagnetism (AF). The dominant component of the SC correlations is of the type ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}},$ while the AF fluctuations are of the type s. Following the strength of both SC and AF fluctuations along the instability line, we obtain the phase diagram. The temperature ${T}_{c}^{\mathrm{RG}}$ can be identified with the crossover temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{co}}$ found in the underdoped regime of the high-temperature superconductors, while in the overdoped regime ${T}_{c}^{\mathrm{RG}}$ corresponds to the superconducting critical temperature.
