Quantum Field Theory of Particle Mixing and Oscillations

Abstract

We report on recent results on the Quantum Field Theory of mixed particles. The quantization procedure is discussed in detail, both for fermions and for bosons and the unitary inequivalence of the flavor and mass representations is proved. Oscillation formulas exhibiting corrections with respect to the usual quantum mechanical ones are then derived.

Currents and charges for mixed fields

Blasone, M, Jizba, P, Vitiello, G

We present an analysis of currents and charges for a system of two mixed fields, both for spinless bosons and for Dirac fermions. This allows us to obtain in a straightforward way the exact field theoretical oscillation formulas exhibiting corrections with respect to the usual ones derived in quantum mechanics.

Entanglement in Quantum Field Theory: particle mixing and oscillations

Massimo Blasone A, Fabio Dell’Anno, Silvio De Siena +1 more

The phenomena of particle mixing and flavor oscillations in elementary particle physics are associated with multi-mode entanglement of single-particle states. We show that, in the framework of quantum field theory, these phenomena exhibit a fine structure of quantum correlations, as multi-mode multi-particle entanglement appears. Indeed, the presence of anti-particles adds further degrees of freedom, thus providing nontrivial contributions both to flavor entanglement and, more generally, to multi-partite entanglement. By using the global entanglement measure, based on the linear entropies associated with all the possible bipartitions, we analyze the entanglement in the multiparticle states of two-flavor neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. A direct comparison with the instance of the quantum mechanical Pontecorvo single-particle states is also performed.

FLAVOR AND CHIRAL OSCILLATIONS

Alex E. Bernardini, Stefano De Leo

We seek a quantum-theoretic expression for the probability that a "fermionic" particle which is initially in a well-defined flavor, linear combination of mass-eigenstates, will be found, at later times, in another flavor state. We approach this problem by using the Dirac equation as evolution equation for the mass-eigenstates. The Dirac formalism is useful and essential in keeping clear many of the conceptual aspects of quantum oscillation phenomena that naturally arise in a relativistic spin one-half particle theory. Our study leads to the conclusion that the fermionic nature of the particles and the interference between positive and negative frequency components of mass-eigenstate wave packets modify the standard oscillation probability, obtained by implicitly assuming a "scalar" nature of the mass-eigenstates. Nevertheless, under particular assumptions, i.e. ultra-relativistic particles, strictly peaked momentum distributions and minimal slippage, these modifications introduce correction factors proportional to [Formula: see text] which are practically un-detectable by any experimental analysis.

A field-theoretical approach to entanglement in neutrino mixing and oscillations

Massimo Blasone, Fabio Dell'Anno, Silvio De Siena +1 more

The phenomena of particle mixing and flavor oscillations in elementary-particle physics can be addressed from the point of view of quantum information theory, and described in terms of multi-mode entanglement of single-particle states. In this paper we show that such a description can be extended to the domain of quantum field theory, where we uncover a fine structure of quantum correlations associated with multi-mode, multi-particle entanglement. By means of an entanglement measure based on the linear entropies associated with all the possible bipartitions, we analyze the entanglement in the states of flavor neutrinos and antineutrinos. Remarkably, we show that the entanglement is connected with experimentally measurable quantities, i.e. the variances of the lepton numbers and charges.
