Dynamic Critical Behavior of Percolation Observables in the 2d Ising Model

Abstract

We present preliminary results of our numerical study of the critical dynamics of percolation observables for the two‐dimensional Ising model. We consider the (Monte‐Carlo) short‐time evolution of the system obtained with a local heat‐bath method and with the global Swendsen‐Wang algorithm. In both cases, we find qualitatively different dynamic behaviors for the magnetization and Ω, the order parameter of the percolation transition. This may have implications for the recent attempts to describe the dynamics of the QCD phase transition using cluster observables.

Dynamic behavior of cluster observables for the 2d Ising model

We present results of our numerical study of the critical dynamics of percolation observables for the two-dimensional Ising model. We consider the (Monte Carlo) short-time evolution of the system with small initial magnetization and heat-bath dynamics. We find qualitatively different dynamic behaviors for the magnetization M and for omega, the so-called strength of the percolating cluster, which is the order parameter of the percolation transition. More precisely, we obtain a (leading) exponential form for omega as a function of the Monte Carlo time t, to be compared with the power-law increase encountered for M at short times. Our results suggest that, although the descriptions in terms of magnetic or percolation order parameters may be equivalent in the equilibrium regime, greater care must be taken to interpret percolation observables at short times.

Short-time dynamics of percolation observables

Wanderson Gonçalves Wanzeller, Tereza Mendes, Gastão I. Krein

We consider the critical short-time evolution of magnetic and droplet-percolation order parameters for the Ising model in two and three dimensions, through Monte Carlo simulations with the (local) heat-bath method. We find qualitatively different dynamic behaviors for the two types of order parameters. More precisely, we find that the percolation order parameter does not have a power-law behavior as encountered for the magnetization, but develops a scale (related to the relaxation time to equilibrium) in the Monte Carlo time. We argue that this difference is due to the difficulty in forming large clusters at the early stages of the evolution. Our results show that, although the descriptions in terms of magnetic and percolation order parameters may be equivalent in the equilibrium regime, greater care must be taken to interpret percolation observables at short times. In particular, this concerns the attempts to describe the dynamics of the deconfinement phase transition in QCD using cluster observables.

Critical dynamics of cluster algorithms in the random-bond Ising model

Ulvi Kanbur, Zeynep Demir Vatansever

In the present work, we present an extensive Monte Carlo simulation study on the dynamical properties of the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model. The correlation time τ of the Swendsen-Wang and Wolff cluster algorithms is calculated at the critical point. The dynamic critical exponent z of both algorithms is also measured by using the numerical data for several lattice sizes up to L=512. It is found for both algorithms that the autocorrelation time decreases considerably and the critical slowing-down effect reduces upon the introduction of bond disorder. Additionally, simulations with the Metropolis algorithm are performed, and the critical slowing-down effect is observed to be more pronounced in the presence of disorder, confirming the previous findings in the literature. Moreover, the existence of the non-self-averaging property of the model is demonstrated by calculating the scaled form of the standard deviation of autocorrelation times. Finally, the critical exponent ratio of the magnetic susceptibility is estimated by using the average cluster size of the Wolff algorithm.

Dynamical percolation transition in the two-dimensional ANNNI model

Anjan Kumar Chandra

The dynamical percolation transition of the two-dimensional axial next nearest-neighbor Ising model due to a pulsed magnetic field has been studied by finite size scaling analysis (by Monte Carlo simulation) for various values of frustration parameters, pulse width and temperature (below the corresponding static transition temperature). It has been found that the size of the largest geometrical cluster shows a transition for a critical field amplitude. Although the transition points shift, the critical exponents remain invariant for a wide range of frustration parameters. They are also the same as those obtained for the 2d Ising model. This suggests that although the static phase diagrams of these two models differ significantly in various aspects, the dynamical percolation transitions of these models belong to the same universality class.

Dynamic Critical Behavior of the Worm Algorithm for the Ising Model

Youjin Deng, Timothy M. Garoni, Alan D. Sokal

We study the dynamic critical behavior of the worm algorithm for the two- and three-dimensional Ising models, by Monte Carlo simulation. The autocorrelation functions exhibit an unusual three-time-scale behavior. As a practical matter, the worm algorithm is slightly more efficient than the Swendsen-Wang algorithm for simulating the two-point function of the three-dimensional Ising model.
