Abstract

The decoding of Low-Density Parity-Check codes by the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm is revisited. We check the iterative algorithm for its convergence to a codeword (termination), we run Monte Carlo simulations to find the probability distribution function of the termination time, n_it. Tested on an example [155, 64, 20] code, this termination curve shows a maximum and an extended algebraic tail at the highest values of n_it. Aiming to reduce the tail of the termination curve we consider a family of iterative algorithms modifying the standard BP by means of a simple relaxation. The relaxation parameter controls the convergence of the modified BP algorithm to a minimum of the Bethe free energy. The improvement is experimentally demonstrated for Additive-White-Gaussian-Noise channel in some range of the signal-to-noise ratios. We also discuss the trade-off between the relaxation parameter of the improved iterative scheme and the number of iterations.

Reduced complexity iterative decoding of low-density parity check codes based on belief propagation

M.P.C. Fossorier, Miodrag J. Mihaljević, Hirotaka Imai

Two simplified versions of the belief propagation algorithm for fast iterative decoding of low-density parity check codes on the additive white Gaussian noise channel are proposed. Both versions are implemented with real additions only, which greatly simplifies the decoding complexity of belief propagation in which products of probabilities have to be computed. Also, these two algorithms do not require any knowledge about the channel characteristics. Both algorithms yield a good performance-complexity trade-off and can be efficiently implemented in software as well as in hardware, with possibly quantized received values.

A Weighted Belief Propagation Decoding Algorithm of LDPC Codes for Fast Convergence and Early Stopping

Tso-Cho Chen

A weighted belief propagation decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check decoding is proposed to accelerate the convergence of decoding and reduce the number of decoding iterations. We propose an early stopping criterion which is based on the average weighted reliability measure of the hard output of decoder to detect undecodable blocks in an early stage of the decoding process. In addition, an adaptive weighted iteration scheme is proposed to increase the convergence speed of belief propagation (BP) decoding and therefore improve the error performance. The evolution of the adaptive weighting factor with the number of decoding iterations is based on the relative entropy between two consecutive ”a posteriori” probabilities distribution at decoder output. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve about 0.2-0.4 dB coding gain improvement on average while reducing up to about 50%-85% iterations for decoding at low to medium E(subscript b)/ N(subscript 0) , compared with the conventional BP based algorithms.

A hybrid belief propagation decoding algorithms of LDPC codes for fast convergence

Tso-Cho Chen, Chia‐Jung Li, Erl‐Huei Lu

A hybrid belief propagation (BP) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check code is proposed to accelerate the convergence of decoding and reduce the number of decoding iterations. The hybrid scheme is presented by integrating the BP algorithm with the bit-flipping function which is used as adaptive weighted factor in the BP iteration decoding. The adaptive weighting factor is based on the average weighted reliability measure of the hard output of decoder. The proposed hybrid adaptive weighted iteration scheme can efficiently increase the convergence speed of the belief propagation decoding and therefore improve the error performance. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the decoding complexity and achieve better error performances as compared with the sum-product algorithm.

Aimin Zhu, Sen-jie Yao

The belief-propagation decoding algorithm for low-density parity check codes is analyzed and the convergence characteristic of this algorithm is researched. A modified belief-propagation decoding algorithm aiming at decreasing the number of iteration is proposed. Simulation result shows that the number of iteration of the proposed algorithm is only half of that of the standard one at expense of little loss in performance.

A Modified belief propagation decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes based on oscillating iteration

Bao Jian-rong

According to no-convergence of falsely oscillating iteration in the low-density parity-check(LDPC) decoding at the range from medium to high SNRs(Signal to Noise Ratios),we propose a modified LDPC belief propagation(BP) decoding algorithm,i.e.soft value zero-forcing BP algorithm.By setting extrinsic information of the oscillating iteration bit nodes into zero, the impact on the iteratively decoding from false channel information is greatly reduced. And it also improves the performance of the decoding algorithm.Furthermore,a decision criterion of oscillating iteration nodes is presented to increase the accuracy of the decision.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better decoding performance than that of the BP algorithm with the same iterations at medium and high SNRs.
