Abstract

The density matrices of graphs are combinatorial laplacians normalised to have trace one (Braunsteinet al. 2006b). If the vertices of a graph are arranged as an array, its density matrix carries a block structure with respect to which properties such as separability can be considered. We prove that the so-called degree-criterion, which was conjectured to be necessary and sufficient for the separability of density matrices of graphs, is equivalent to the PPT-criterion. As such, it is not sufficient for testing the separability of density matrices of graphs (we provide an explicit example). Nonetheless, we prove the sufficiency when one of the array dimensions has length two (see Wu (2006) for an alternative proof). Finally, we derive a rational upper bound on the concurrence of density matrices of graphs and show that this bound is exact for graphs on four vertices.

Some families of density matrices for which separability is easily tested

Samuel L. Braunstein, Sibasish Ghosh A, Toufik Mansour +2 more

We reconsider density matrices of graphs as defined in quant-ph/0406165. The density matrix of a graph is the combinatorial Laplacian of the graph normalized to have unit trace. We describe a simple combinatorial condition (the ``degree condition'') to test the separability of density matrices of graphs. The condition is directly related to the Peres-Horodecki partial transposition condition. We prove that the degree condition is necessary for separability, and we conjecture that it is also sufficient. We prove special cases of the conjecture involving nearest-point graphs and perfect matchings. We observe that the degree condition appears to have a value beyond the density matrices of graphs. In fact, we point out that circulant density matrices and other matrices constructed from groups always satisfy the condition and indeed are separable with respect to any split. We isolate a number of problems and delineate further generalizations.

The Tripartite Separability of Density Matrices of Graphs

Zhen Wang, Zhi‐Xi Wang

The density matrix of a graph is the combinatorial laplacian matrix of a graph normalized to have unit trace. In this paper we generalize the entanglement properties of mixed density matrices from combinatorial laplacian matrices of graphs discussed in Braunstein et al. [Annals of Combinatorics, 10 (2006) 291] to tripartite states. Then we prove that the degree condition defined in Braunstein et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 73 (2006) 012320] is sufficient and necessary for the tripartite separability of the density matrix of a nearest point graph.

Separability of Density Matrices of Graphs for Multipartite Systems

Chen Xie, Hui Zhao, Zhi‐Xi Wang

We investigate separability of Laplacian matrices of graphs when seen as density matrices. This is a family of quantum states with many combinatorial properties. We firstly show that the well-known matrix realignment criterion can be used to test separability of this type of quantum states. The criterion can be interpreted as novel graph-theoretic idea. Then, we prove that the density matrix of the tensor product of N graphs is N-separable. However, the converse is not necessarily true. Additionally, we derive a sufficient condition for N-partite entanglement in star graphs and propose a necessary and sufficient condition for separability of nearest point graphs.

On the degree conjecture for separability of multipartite quantum states

Ali Saif M. Hassan, Pramod S. Joag

We settle the so-called degree conjecture for the separability of multipartite quantum states, which are normalized graph Laplacians, first given by Braunstein et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 012320 (2006)]. The conjecture states that a multipartite quantum state is separable if and only if the degree matrix of the graph associated with the state is equal to the degree matrix of the partial transpose of this graph. We call this statement to be the strong form of the conjecture. In its weak version, the conjecture requires only the necessity, that is, if the state is separable, the corresponding degree matrices match. We prove the strong form of the conjecture for pure multipartite quantum states using the modified tensor product of graphs defined by Hassan and Joag [J. Phys. A 40, 10251 (2007)], as both necessary and sufficient condition for separability. Based on this proof, we give a polynomial-time algorithm for completely factorizing any pure multipartite quantum state. By polynomial-time algorithm, we mean that the execution time of this algorithm increases as a polynomial in m, where m is the number of parts of the quantum system. We give a counterexample to show that the conjecture fails, in general, even in its weak form, for multipartite mixed states. Finally, we prove this conjecture, in its weak form, for a class of multipartite mixed states, giving only a necessary condition for separability.

A note on the degree conjecture for separability of multipartite quantum states

Zhen Wang, Ming‐Jing Zhao, Zhi‐Xi Wang

The degree conjecture for bipartite quantum states which are normalized graph Laplacians was first put forward by Braunstein et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73 (2006) 012320]. The degree criterion, which is equivalent to PPT criterion, is simpler and more efficient to detect the separability of quantum states associated with graphs. Hassan et al. settled the degree conjecture for the separability of multipartite quantum states in [J. Math. Phys. 49 (2008) 0121105]. It is proved that the conjecture is true for pure multipartite quantum states. However, the degree condition is only necessary for separability of a class of quantum mixed states. It does not apply to all mixed states. In this paper, we show that the degree conjecture holds for the mixed quantum states of nearest point graph. As a byproduct, the degree criterion is necessary and sufficient for multipartite separability of [Formula: see text]-qubit quantum states associated with graphs.

Families of bipartite states classifiable by the positive partial transposition criterion

Frank E. S. Steinhoff, M. C. de Oliveira

We construct a family of bipartite states of arbitrary dimension whose eigenvalues of the partially transposed matrix can be inferred directly from the block structure of the global density matrix. We identify from this several subfamilies in which the PPT criterion is both necessary and sufficient. A sufficient criterion of separability is obtained, which is fundamental for the discussion. We show how several examples of states known to be classifiable by the PPT criterion indeed belong to this general set. Possible uses of these states in numerical analysis of entanglement and in the search of PPT bound entangled states are briefly discussed.
