Quantum Computation

Jaden Pieper, Manuel E. Lladser

A quantum computer is a machine that exploits quantum phenomena to store information and perform computations.\nThe chief goal of this article is to provide a brief but comprehensive introduction to quantum computing. It overviews some mathematical underpinnings of quantum computation for readers with only a basic knowledge of linear algebra and probability. However, it does not attempt to be exhaustive nor make an exposition of quantum physics. It further does not attempt to stay current with physical implementations of quantum computers.\nAfter providing a brief historical background, the article introduces the notion of a quantum bit (qubit) and the linear operators (gates) that act on these. It then addresses systems of multiple qubits and their corresponding gates. Along the way, the article covers the essential concepts of separable systems, as well quantum interference and decoherence. It also describes how to represent gates as quantum circuits. To conclude, it explains the underpinnings of two simple but insightful quantum algorithms. A final section suggests further readings for those who wish to delve deeper into quantum computing.

An Overview of Quantum Computing's Potential to Solve Complex Problems

Syeda Kawsar -

Quantum computing is necessary to be described as a powerful tool is the new generation of computational power that works based on the principles of quantum mechanics, allowing the solving of problems that are intractable for classical computers. Due to the utilization of such phenomena as superposition, quantum entanglement and quantum interference, quantum computers are said to be able to solve problems in such areas as cryptography, artificial intelligence, optimization problems and material sciences, among others. This paper attempts to examine the basic concepts of quantum computing while focusing on their different aspects and their potential impacts. This study its experience and potential in its current form and in future applications through examples, illustrations, and theoretical discussion. Specific problems, including error correction, hardware scalability, and requirements for resources to address, make the paper a comprehensive overview of the quantum computing potential and weaknesses. Moving towards practical examples, the discussion covers all aspects of the book, providing readers with a holistic understanding of how quantum computing is going to change technological paradigms in the forthcoming decades.

Lie Theory for Quantum Control

Gunther Dirr, Uwe Helmke B

Abstract One of the main theoretical challenges in quantum computing is the design of explicit schemes that enable one to effectively factorize a given final unitary operator into a product of basic unitary operators. As this is equivalent to a constructive controllability task on a Lie group of special unitary operators, one faces interesting classes of bilinear optimal control problems for which efficient numerical solution algorithms are sought for. In this paper we give a review on recent Lie‐theoretical developments in finite‐dimensional quantum control that play a key role for solving such factorization problems on a compact Lie group. After a brief introduction to basic terms and concepts from quantum mechanics, we address the fundamental control theoretic issues for bilinear control systems and survey standard techniques fromLie theory relevant for quantum control. Questions of controllability, accessibility and time optimal control of spin systems are in the center of our interest. Some remarks on computational aspects are included as well. The idea is to enable the potential reader to understand the problems in clear mathematical terms, to assess the current state of the art and get an overview on recent developments in quantum control‐an emerging interdisciplinary field between physics, control and computation. Atomic Quantum Technologies for Quantum Matter and Fundamental Physics Applications

Jorge Yago Malo, Luca Lepori, Laura Gentini +1 more

Physics is living an era of unprecedented cross-fertilization among the different areas of science. In this perspective review, we discuss the manifold impact that state-of-the-art cold and ultracold-atomic platforms can have in fundamental and applied science through the development of platforms for quantum simulation, computation, metrology and sensing. We illustrate how the engineering of table-top experiments with atom technologies is engendering applications to understand problems in condensed matter and fundamental physics, cosmology and astrophysics, unveil foundational aspects of quantum mechanics, and advance quantum chemistry and the emerging field of quantum biology. In this journey, we take the perspective of two main approaches, i.e., creating quantum analogues and building quantum simulators, highlighting that independently of the ultimate goal of a universal quantum computer to be met, the remarkable transformative effects of these achievements remain unchanged. We wish to convey three main messages. First, this atom-based quantum technology enterprise is signing a new era in the way quantum technologies are used for fundamental science, even beyond the advancement of knowledge, which is characterised by truly cross-disciplinary research, extended interplay between theoretical and experimental thinking, and intersectoral approach. Second, quantum many-body physics is unavoidably taking center stage in frontier’s science. Third, quantum science and technology progress will have capillary impact on society, meaning this effect is not confined to isolated or highly specialized areas of knowledge, but is expected to reach and have a pervasive influence on a broad range of society aspects: while this happens, the adoption of a responsible research and innovation approach to quantum technologies is mandatory, to accompany citizens in building awareness and future scaffolding. Following on all the above reflections, this perspective review is thus aimed at scientists active or interested in interdisciplinary research, providing the reader with an overview of the current status of these wide fields of research where cold and ultracold-atomic platforms play a vital role in their description and simulation.
