We have found the exact ground state for two frustrated quantum spin-
21 models on a linear chain. The first model describes the antiferromagnet-ferromagnet transition point. The singlet state at this point has double-spiral ordering. The second model is equivalent to special case of the spin-
21 ladder. It has a nondegenerate singlet ground state with exponentially decaying spin correlations, and there is an energy gap. The exact ground-state wave function of these models is presented in a special recurrent form, and a recurrence technique for expectation value calculations is developed.
We outline the recent results on the ground state for a class of one- and two-dimensional frustrated quantum spin models with competing ferro(F)- and antiferromagnetic (AF) interactions. Frustrated spin systems are known to have many interesting properties due to large quantum fluctuations. As a result of these fluctuations usual mean-field approach gives quite crude (if not false) description of these systems. Therefore, exactly solvable models are very instructive at investigations of such systems. The exact ground state wave function of proposed models has a structure of the valence-bond state (VBS) type. One of the 1D model describes the transition line between the F and AF phase. The exact singlet ground state on this line has a double-spiral ordering. Using different approximation methods we study the magnetization curve in the AF phase. The second considered set of the 1D and 2D models has an exact non-degenerate ground state with exponentially decaying spin correlations. We also proposed the 1D and 2D electronic models with exact ground state represented in terms of singlet bond functions which are the generalization of the RVB functions including ionic states.
A frustrated spin-1/2 model is constructed on the square lattice, the Hamiltonian of which contains five types of interactions: nearest-neighbor (NN), diagonal (D), next-nearest-neighbor (NNN), knight's-move-distance away (KM), and further-neighbor diagonal (FND). The NN bonds in a particular direction, horizontal or vertical, are of alternating coupling strengths 7J and J. The other interaction strengths are: J (for NN and D), (J), J/2 (for NNN and KM), and J/4 (for FND). We prove that the exact ground state of the Hamiltonian is the columnar-dimer state.
Using the matrix product formalism, we define a multiparameter family of spin models on one-dimensional chains, with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions for which exact analytical expressions can be found for its doubly degenerate ground states. The family of Hamiltonians depends on five continuous parameters and the Majumdar-Ghosh model is a particular point in this parameter space. The model can also be represented as a zigzag spin ladder in which there are extra three-particle couplings between spins on vertices of triangles. The doubly degenerate ground states of these models models have a very simple structure, they are the product of entangled (dimer) states on adjacent sites (or consecutive rungs of the ladder in the zigzag ladder picture). At the Majumdar-Ghosh point, these entangled states become the spin-singlets pertaining to this model. We will also calculate, in closed form, the two point correlation functions, both for finite sizes of the chain and in the thermodynamic limit.
Two-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models are numerically studied using Entanglement Perturbation Theory, where the ground state wave function is described by a product of local matrices defined at every site, and each matrix is optimized variationally to minimize the energy. We first apply this method for the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattices to reproduce correctly the known ground state energy and the spin structure factors. Then, we study the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with spatially anisotropic nearest neighbor couplings, J and J ', to establish the ground state phase diagram as a function of J'/ J.
In the first part of this paper, we study the spin-
S Kitaev model using spin-wave theory. We discover a remarkable geometry of the minimum-energy surface in the
N-spin space. The classical ground states, called Cartesian or CN-ground states, whose number grows exponentially with the number of spins
N, form a set of points in the
N-spin space. These points are connected by a network of flat valleys in the
N-spin space giving rise to a continuous family of classical ground states. Further, the CN-ground states have a correspondence with dimer coverings and with self-avoiding walks on a honeycomb lattice. The zero-point energy of our spin-wave theory picks out a subset from a continuous family of classically degenerate states as the quantum ground states; the number of these states also grows exponentially with
N. In the second part, we present some exact results. For arbitrary spin
S, we show that localized
Z2 flux excitations are present by constructing plaquette operators with eigenvalues $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, which commute with the Hamiltonian. This set of commuting plaquette operators leads to an exact vanishing of the spin-spin correlation functions beyond nearest-neighbor separation found earlier for the spin-1/2 model [G. Baskaran et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 247201 (2007)]. We introduce a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation for the case of general spin
S and find a complete set of commuting link operators similar to the spin-1/2 model, thereby making the
Z2 gauge structure more manifest. The Jordan-Wigner construction also leads, in a natural fashion, to Majorana fermion operators for half-odd-integer spin cases and hard-core boson operators for integer spin cases strongly suggesting the presence of Majorana fermion and boson excitations in the respective low-energy sectors. Finally, we present a modified Kitaev Hamiltonian, which is exactly solvable for all half-odd-integer spins; it is equivalent to an exponentially large number of copies of spin-1/2 Kitaev Hamiltonians.
