Abstract

The critical temperature of a superfluid phase transition in a Fermi gas with repulsive interaction is found. The influence of a magnetic field on the transition is analyzed. The estimates for the critical temperature for a trapped gas of $^6$Li atoms and $^3$He--$^4$He mixtures are presented.

Superfluid transition temperature in a Fermi gas with repulsion allowing for higher orders of perturbation theory

Dmitri V. Efremov, M. S. Mar’enko, M. A. Baranov +1 more

Higher-order perturbation-theory corrections to the superfluid transition temperature in a weakly nonideal Fermi gas with repulsion are determined. This involves calculating the contribution of third-and fourth-order diagrams in terms of the gas parameter ap F to the effective interaction which determines the super-fluid transition temperature and also allowing for effects associated with retardation and renormalization of the polar part of the Green’s function. The expressions obtained provide evidence in support of attraction in the effective interaction in the second, third, and fourth orders of perturbation theory. It is shown that the critical temperature is mainly determined by second-and third-order terms of perturbation theory. Calculations are made of the superfluid transition temperature for a gas comprising neutral Fermi particles in a magnetic field. The limits of validity of the theory are analyzed and the possibility of applying the results to dilute solutions of 3 He in 4 He and neutral-particle Fermi gases in magnetic traps is discussed.

Superfluid phase transition in trapped atomic Fermi gas

M. A. Baranov

Superfluid phase transition in an atomic Fermi gas confined to a harmonic trap is studied. The critical transition temperature and the temperature dependence and spatial shape of the order parameter are determined. The spectrum and wave functions of single-particle and collective excitations are obtained for a gas in the superfluid phase. The excitation eigenfrequencies exhibit a pronounced temperature dependence, allowing, e.g., identification of the superfluid phase.

Effects of the trapping potential on a superfluid atomic Fermi gas

Georg M. Bruun

We examine a dilute two-component atomic Fermi gas trapped in a harmonic potential in the superfluid phase. For experimentally realistic parameters, the trapping potential is shown to have crucial influence on various properties of the gas. Using an effective Hamiltonian, analytical results for the critical temperature, the temperature dependence of the superfluid gap, and the energy of the lowest collective modes are derived. These results are shown to agree well with numerical calculations. We also discuss in more detail a previously proposed method to experimentally observe the superfluid transition by looking at the collective-mode spectrum. Our results are aimed at the present experimental effort to observe a superfluid phase transition in a trapped atomic Fermi gas.

Critical temperature and Ginzburg-Landau equation for a trapped Fermi gas

M. A. Baranov, Dmitry S. Petrov

We discuss a superfluid phase transition in a trapped neutral-atom Fermi gas. We consider the case where the critical temperature greatly exceeds the spacing between the trap levels and derive the corresponding Ginzburg-Landau equation. The latter turns out to be analogous to the equation for the condensate wave function in a trapped Bose gas. The analysis of its solution provides us with the value of the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ and with the spatial and temperature dependence of the order parameter in the vicinity of the phase transition point.

Superfluid state of atomic 6Li in a magnetic trap

M. Houbiers, R. Ferwerda, Henk T. C. Stoof +3 more

We report on a study of the superfluid state of spin-polarized atomic ${}^{6}$Li confined in a magnetic trap. Density profiles of this degenerate Fermi gas and the spatial distribution of the BCS order parameter are calculated in the local-density approximation. The critical temperature is determined as a function of the number of particles in the trap. Furthermore, we consider the mechanical stability of an interacting two-component Fermi gas, in the case of both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. For spin-polarized ${}^{6}$Li we also calculate the decay rate of the gas and show that within the mechanically stable regime of phase space, the lifetime is long enough to perform experiments on the gas below and above the critical temperature if a bias magnetic field of about 5 T is applied. Moreover, we propose that a measurement of the decay rate of the system might signal the presence of the superfluid state.
