Abstract

The dynamical spin structure factor and the Raman response are calculated for structurally dimerized and spin-Peierls chains in a magnetic field, using exact diagonalization techniques. In both cases there is a spin liquid phase composed of interacting singlet dimers at small fields $h<{h}_{c1},$ an incommensurate regime ${(h}_{c1}<h<{h}_{c2})$ in which the modulation of the triplet excitation spectra adapts to the applied field, and a fully spin-polarized phase above an upper critical field ${h}_{c2}.$ For structurally dimerized chains, the spin gap closes in the incommensurate phase, whereas spin-Peierls chains remain gapped. In the spin liquid regimes, the dominant feature of the triplet spectra is a one-magnon bound state, separated from a continuum of states at higher energies. There are also indications of a singlet bound state above the one-magnon triplet.

Excitations and dynamical structure factor of J 1 − J 2 spin- 3 2 and spin- 5 2 Heisenberg spin chains

We study the dynamical structure factor of the frustrated spin-$3/2\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg chains, with particular focus on the partially dimerized phase that emerges between two Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. Using a valence bond solid Ansatz corroborated by density-matrix renormalization-group simulations, we investigate the nature of magnon and spinon excitations through the single-mode approximation. We show that the magnon develops an incommensurate dispersion at ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\approx}0.32{J}_{1}$, while the spinons, viewed as domain walls between degenerate valence bond solid states, become incommensurate at ${J}_{2}\ensuremath{\approx}0.4{J}_{1}$ beyond the Lifshitz point $({J}_{2}\ensuremath{\approx}0.388{J}_{1})$. The dynamical structure factor exhibits rich spectral features shaped by the interplay between these excitations, with magnons appearing as resonances embedded in the spinon continuum. The spinon gap shows a nonmonotonic behavior, reaching a peak near the center of the partially dimerized phase and closing at the boundaries, suggesting the appearance of a floating phase as a result of the condensation of incommensurate spinons. Comparative analysis with the spin-$5/2$ case confirms the universality of these phenomena across half-integer higher-spin systems. Our results provide detailed insight into how fractionalization and incommensurate condensation govern the spectral properties of frustrated spin chains, offering a unified picture across different spin magnitudes.

Dynamical properties of spin-orbital chains in a magnetic field

Weiqiang Yu, Stephan Haas

The excitation spectrum of the one-dimensional spin-orbital model in a magnetic field is studied, using a recently developed dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group technique. The method is applied to chains with up to 80 sites, and examined for test cases such as the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet whose excitation spectrum is known exactly from the Bethe ansatz. In the spin-orbital chain, the characteristic dynamical response depends strongly on the model parameters and the applied magnetic field. The coupling between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom is found to influence the incommensuration at finite magnetizations. In the regions of the phase diagram with only massive spin and orbital excitations, a finite field is required to overcome the spin gap. An orbital mode is found to become massless in this partially spin-polarized regime, indicating a strong coupling between the two degrees of freedom. In the critical region with three elementary gapless excitations, a prominent particle-hole excitation is observed at higher energies, promoted by the biquadratic term in the model Hamiltonian of the spin-orbital chain.

Magnon-magnon interactions in the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3

Claudius Gros, Wolfgang Wenzel, Andreas Fledderjohann +6 more

In a magnetic substance the gap in the Raman spectrum, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{R}}$, and the neutron-scattering gap, ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{N}}$, are related by ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{R}}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{N}}$\ensuremath{\approx}2 if the the magnetic excitations (magnons) are only weakly interacting. But for ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3}$ the experimentally observed ratio is of the order ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{R}}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{N}}$\ensuremath{\sim}1.49--1.78, indicating attractive magnon-magnon interactions in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-Peierls compound ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3}$. We present numerical estimates of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{R}}$/${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{\mathrm{N}}$ from exact diagonalization studies for finite chains and find agreement with experiment for intermediate values of the frustration parameter \ensuremath{\alpha}. An analysis of the numerical Raman intensity leads us to postulate a continuum of two-magnon bound states in the spin-Peierls phase. We discuss in detail the numerical method used, the dependence of the results on the model parameters, and a matrix-element effect due to the dimerization of the Raman operator in the spin-Peierls phase.

Confinement, deconfinement, and bound states in the spin-1 and spin- 3 2 generalizations of the Majumdar-Ghosh chain

We investigate the nature of low-energy excitations in a spin chain with antiferrmomagnetic nearest-neighbor $J_1$, next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$, and three-site $J_3$ interactions using the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group and the single mode approximation techniques. In the absence of the $J_2$ interaction, we identify clear distinctions in the spectral functions in the fully dimerized phase across the exactly dimerized line for different magnitudes of the spins. In contrast to the spin-$1/2$ chain, where the spinon continuum dominates the spectral functions, the magnon modes are prominent in the spectral functions of the spin-$1$ and spin-$3/2$ chains. Through single mode approximation and valence bond solid approaches, we disentangle magnon and spinon contributions to the spectral functions. After including the $J_2$ interactions, for the spin-$1$ chain we trace the evolution of the dynamical structure factor along the phase transition line between the Haldane phase and the fully dimerized phase. We find that the excitation spectrum is a continuum along this line and the spectral gap closes as the order of the transition changes from first order to second order. Along the line of first-order transitions, the spinon-like domain walls are deconfined, and the model exhibits their confinement into discrete bound states away from the transition line. A similar phenomenon occurs in the spin-$3/2$ chain across the phase transition between partially dimerized to fully dimerized phases, revealing a universal spinon confinement phenomenon across first-order phase transitions. This study presents the dynamical structure factor corresponding to the ground state phase diagram and establishes a unified quasiparticle framework for understanding the fundamental nature of excitations across distinct quantum phases in frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Heisenberg spin chains.

Finite-temperature dynamical correlations for the dimerized spin- 12 chain

Emanuele Coira, Peter Barmettler, Thierry Giamarchi +1 more

We use the density matrix renormalization group method to compute the frequency and momentum-resolved spin-spin correlation functions of a dimerized spin-1/2 chain under a magnetic field at finite temperature. The spectral features strongly depend on the regime of the magnetic field. For increasing magnetic fields, the transitions from a gapped spin liquid phase to a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and then to a totally polarized phase, can be identified in the spectra. Compared to the zero-temperature case, the finite-temperature excitations give rise to additional spectral features that we compute numerically and identify analytically as transitions from thermally excited states. We compute quantitatively the broadening of the dispersion of a single spin-flip excitation due to the temperature and find a strong asymmetric broadening. We discuss the consequences of these findings for neutron experiments on dimerized one-dimensional quantum chains.

Elementary excitations in dimerized and frustrated Heisenberg chains

G. Bouzerar, A. P. Kampf, G. I. Japaridze

We present a detailed numerical analysis of the low-energy excitation spectrum of a frustrated and dimerized spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain. In particular, we show that in the commensurate spin-Peierls phase the ratio of the singlet and triplet excitation gap is a universal function which depends on the frustration parameter only. We identify the conditions for which a second elementary triplet branch in the excitation spectrum splits from the continuum. We compare our results with predictions from the continuum limit field theory. We discuss the relevance of our data in connection with recent experiments on ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3},$ ${\mathrm{NaV}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{5},$ and $(\mathrm{VO}{)}_{2}{\mathrm{P}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$.
