Analytical ground state for the three-band Hubbard model

Abstract

For the calculation of charge excitations as those observed in, e.g., photoemission spectroscopy or in electron-energy-loss spectroscopy, a correct description of ground-state charge properties is essential. In strongly correlated systems like the undoped cuprates this is a highly nontrivial problem. In this paper we derive a nonperturbative analytical approximation for the ground state of the three-band Hubbard model on an infinite, half-filled ${\mathrm{CuO}}_{2}$ plane. By comparison with projector quantum Monte Carlo calculations it is shown that the resulting expressions correctly describe the charge properties of the ground state. Relations to other approaches are discussed. The analytical ground state preserves size consistency and can be generalized for other geometries, while still being both easy to interpret and to evaluate.

QUANTUM MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS FOR THE THREE-BAND HUBBARD MODEL

G. Dopf, Alejandro Muramatsu, Werner R. Hanke

We present in this article results of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the three-band Hubbard model obtained both with the grand canonical approach as well as with the T =0 formalism. A direct comparison of Quantum Monte Carlo results with experimental values for the charge-transfer gap leads to a set of parameters for the three-band Hubbard model that consistently describes salient features of the high- T c superconductors. We find long-range antiferromagnetic order in the undoped case as well as an incommensurate structure for a doping concentration of δ≈0.20. Moreover the magnetic susceptibility as a function of doping δ is in a qualitative agreement with experiments. Concerning dynamical properties, we have evaluated the spectral density [Formula: see text]. The dispersion of the state with the lowest excitation energy is in very good agreement with experimental photoemission and inverse photoemission experiments for a doping concentration of δ=0.25. In the superconducting regime, we find that the interaction vertex for the pairing correlation function in the extended s-channel shows a maximum for δ~0.20, resembling the dependence of T c on doping. This feature is not present for other symmetries of the order parameter or in other parameter regions.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations of the Half-filled Hubbard Model

Anders F. J. Gabrielsson

A Quantum Monte Carlo method of calculating operator expectation values for the ground state of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model on large square lattices is presented, along with some comparisons of the results obtained from this method and alternative methods for 2D lattices. In the simulations the ground state is projected out from an arbitrary state and sampled in a valence\nbond basis spanning the spin singlet subspace. The projection method is then extended to be used on a simplified Hubbard model at half-filling, which is\naptly called the T0-less Hubbard model, for arbitrary relative strengths of the electron hopping and electron-electron repulsion energy parameters. Results for calculated ground state energies in 1D are presented. These calculations are performed using a spin-charge separated basis, in which the valence bonds\nare generalized to also carry charge.

Metal-insulator transition in the ground state of the three-band Hubbard model at half filling

Ettore Vitali, Hao Shi, Adam Chiciak +1 more

The three-band Hubbard model is a fundamental model for understanding properties of the copper-oxygen planes in cuprate superconductors. We use cutting-edge auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) methods to investigate ground state properties of the model in the parent compound. Large supercells combined with twist averaged boundary conditions are employed to reliably reach the thermodynamic limit. Benchmark quality results are obtained on the magnetic correlations and charge gap. A key parameter of this model is the charge-transfer energy $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ between the oxygen $p$ and the copper $d$ orbitals, which appears to vary significantly across different families of cuprates and whose ab initio determination is subtle. We show that the system undergoes a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a paramagnetic metal as $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ is lowered to $3\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$.

Interaction-energy functional for lattice density functional theory: Applications to one-, two-, and three-dimensional Hubbard models

Román López-Sandoval, G. M. Pastor

The Hubbard model is investigated in the framework of lattice density functional theory (LDFT). The single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}}$ with respect to the lattice sites is considered as the basic variable of the many-body problem. A new approximation to the interaction-energy functional $W[\ensuremath{\gamma}]$ is proposed which is based on its scaling properties and which recovers exactly the limit of strong electron correlations at half-band filling. In this way, a more accurate description of W is obtained throughout the domain of representability of ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{\mathrm{ij}},$ including the crossover from weak to strong correlations. As examples of applications results are given for the ground-state energy, charge-excitation gap, and charge susceptibility of the Hubbard model in one-, two-, and three-dimensional lattices. The performance of the method is demonstrated by comparison with available exact solutions, with numerical calculations, and with LDFT using a simpler dimer ansatz for W. Goals and limitations of the different approximations are discussed.

Magnetic and charge orders in the ground state of the Emery model: Accurate numerical results

Adam Chiciak, Ettore Vitali, Shiwei Zhang

We perform extensive auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) calculations for the three-band Hubbard (Emery) model in order to study the ground-state properties of copper-oxygen planes in the cuprates. Employing cutting-edge AFQMC techniques with a self-consistent gauge constraint in auxiliary-field space to control the sign problem, we reach supercells containing $\ensuremath{\approx}500$ atoms to capture collective modes in the charge and spin orders and characterize the behavior in the thermodynamic limit. The self-consistency scheme interfacing with generalized Hartree-Fock calculations allows high accuracy in AFQMC to resolve small energy scales, which is crucial for determining the complex candidate orders in such a system. We present detailed information on the charge order, spin order, momentum distribution, and localization properties as a function of charge-transfer energy for the the underdoped regime. In contrast with the stripe and spiral orders under hole doping, we find that the corresponding $1/8$ electron-doped system exhibits purely antiferromagnetic order in the three-band model, consistent with the asymmetry between electron and hole doping in the phase diagram of cuprates.

Analytic calculation of ground-state properties of correlated fermions with the Gutzwiller wave function

Walter Metzner, D. Vollhardt

A new analytic approach to the evaluation of ground-state properties of Hubbard-type models in terms of the Gutzwiller variational wave function is presented. It is based on the observation that expectation values in terms of this wave function may be expressed by sums over different lattice sites. This makes the application of Wick's theorem and the resulting contractions extremely simple, since the latter involve only anticommuting numbers as in a Grassmann algebra. Expressions for the momentum distribution ${n}_{\mathrm{k}\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ and the Hubbard interaction in terms of a power series in a particular correlation parameter are derived which are valid for all dimensions. An explicit diagrammatic evaluation of the coefficients is described. In one dimension these coefficients may be determined to all orders which yields an approximation-free calculation of ${n}_{\mathrm{k}}$ and ground-state energy E for arbitrary density n and interaction strength U. In the case of a half-filled band and large U, hitherto unexpected nonanalyticities are found. The results allow for the first approximation-free assessment of the properties of the Gutzwiller wave function. It is shown that the well-known Gutzwiller approximation may be derived diagrammatically, too. The approximation is seen to yield the exact results for expectation values in terms of this wave function in the limit of infinite dimensionality.
